JJ Hoover signs with Milwaukee on Minor League Deal - Camp Invite

Yuck...

In 60 IP in 2016-2017, his ERA is 6.9, FIP 6.32 and WHIP of 1.9. 2017 alone, while is ERA was 3.92, his FIP was 4.71 and WHIP of 1.76. Have to believe this is simply a depth move.

I second that opinion. Hopefully he gets cut right out of the gate.

He K's a lot of guys. Maybe they saw a flaw in his delivery that will fix his control a bit. It's a minor league contract. Not a big deal to take a flier on him.

Yeah, this could be a guy they stick in AAA in case of need. If they can fix something and he shows signs of life, then they got a good deal. If not, then he gets mop-up innings in AAA or gets cut.

j.j. hoover burned his final option in 2017. he has been outrighted to the minor leagues before, so if he's added to the 25-man roster, he has the right to become a free agent (voiding his contract) if the brewers later decide to outright him back to the minor leagues.

If he was brought in as insurance, then he would only get called up to cover for injury or under-performance. If he pitches poorly enough in that call-up that they want to send him back down, then they'd probably be pretty happy if he voids the contract to become a free agent.

Management group (both front office and on field management) look a bit foolish after this one. Let's yo-yo Woodruff back and forth between Milwaukee and the minors and not just put him in the rotation and keep in the rotation. We need a fresh arm (even though we aren't even 10 games into the season). So Hoover comes up and the fresh arm has to get a whole ONE out at the end of a game that is seemingly already lost. Then he comes into the next game, gets shelled and loses the ballgame. It really wasn't that hard to predict this outcome, as from 2014-2017 Hoover had thrown 187 innings, had a 4.86 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and 5.23 FIP. So after that performance we lose at least one start from Woodruff, who at worst should be getting evaluated as a major leaguer right now considering he was a top 100 prospect when he recently lost eligibility. And I very much doubt Tyler Webb figures into the Brewers future, and I think it's likely that he'll end up back in the Brewer's system after the DFA status expires. But there are moves I would have rather seen than exposing Webb to waivers. One would have been not putting Hoover on the active roster since Hoover had a four year track record of establishing himself as not really being a MLB quality pitcher.

If Corbin Burnes is reading this, all I can say is you better start very fast once you hit the majors. Because if you have a sub-par 43 innings like Woodruff had last year you will probably be subjected to the MLB/AAA yo-yo and get replaced by a big timer like Wade Miley at Milwaukee's first opportunity to do so.

And this organization has a near 50 year reputation of completely botching the pitching department? I never would have guessed.....

But hey, if making one move with the active roster every game gets Stearns and Counsell to think that they are the smartest guys in the league, then they can keep having fun with that.

So far Stearns track record on finding scrapheap pitchers leaves much to be desired compared to Melvin's.

How so? Guerra was easily our best starter in 2016 and Torres was very successful in relief in 2016 as was Hughes in 2017. Drake has been kind of a wash as far as expectations go and obviously the jury is still out on Jennings and Miley. Sign enough of these guys and you're going to have your Milones and Gallardos and Hoovers, some just aren't going to pan out as many didn't in the Melvin era either.

Now to the extent that I'd like to see less of these moves and more opportunities for our young live arms at the MLB level, I'd definitely agree with that.

Maybe the fact that Williams is still here in their latest move shows that they are learning. This time last year they would have just optioned Williams, kept Hoover up and said "Depth."

Agree with this 100%. I'm hoping that they give Lopez some actual run. it's time to find out what we have in some of these guys.

I believe part of the reason for keeping Williams over Hoover was that if Pina needs a DL stint, they'll need to add Christian Bethancourt to the 40-man and Hoover was probably the low man on the 40-man totem pole. Assuming they wouldn't call up Nottingham instead.

I would hope they would just call up Nottingham. It would be nice to give him a small look, plus he would probably be in line for 2 starts at most. Don't really like the idea of a 5th catcher for another spot that in 2 weeks would either be burning a 40 man spot or need to be DFAed.

Good point. Nottingham doesn't have near the veteran grittyness that Counsell requires. Bethancourt, on the other hand, probably eats a bowl of grit for breakfast every morning.

I actually like Bethancourt. Solid defender with a huge arm, and the bat showed well in spring.

Nottingham is finally making some progress again, by all accounts, both defensively and at the plate. I wouldn't want to screw around with him, just leave him be and stay on course.

Plus, I want to see Bethancourt. There's at least a chance he would be a better option than Bandy, and maybe even Voght for the rest of this season.
