This makes me happy... I am surprised we didn't lose him.

 

Brewers re-signed LHP Nick Ramirez to a minor league contract.

 

Ramirez pulled off an astonishingly successful conversion from first baseman to relief pitcher last year in the minors, posting a 1.36 ERA in 79 1/3 innings between Double-A Biloxi and Triple-A Colorado Springs. If he can roll that into 2018, the 28-year-old southpaw will likely find a spot in the Milwaukee bullpen at some point. Ramirez was a fourth-round pick of the Brewers in 2011.

If he pans out, his bat will be quite useful as a pitcher in certain situations as well...I like this signing!!

He may relieve for a bit before being stretched out.

He's on a minor league deal, so that doesn't affect any option talk unless he gets added to the 40-man roster.

If not a closer, he might be a seventh or eighth inning guy. And he can even pinch hit....in a pinch.

If he proves to be a capable MLB-caliber reliever, don't discount this. Kieschnick flamed out pretty quickly with the Brewers, but he had some very good pitching appearances with the team, and hit several clutch bombs. I always thought his use was mismanaged by Yost as well.

I think someone like Ramirez or Kieschnick is useful as a 3-5 inning pitcher.

 

Their jobs are to save the rest of the bullpen in either a blowout game or in extra innings, largely by not needing to be pinch-hit for.

 

Say Anderson has one of those days, only goes three innings. you put in Ramirez to get most of the rest of the game. His bat won't kill a rally, and there is the chance the Crew can make a comeback.

 

Similarly, in extra innings, you can put Ramirez in, and have him go for a while - and his bat just might get you ahead OR keep a good bench bat available to take advantage of a lefty-righty split.

Houser, like Taylor Williams last year, will need a year to rebuild his arm strength. He will likely be in the minors, maybe even at AA, and like Williams may start games with pitch counts limits for the first couple of months. I would be surprised if there isn't some type of limit put on his usage; being a full starter without limits next year is highly unlikely.

At 28 does he have a shot a the Bigs with MKE?

He should. All he has done is produce as a reliever.

The issue now is with Hader, Jennings and the impending return of Logan, along with the likelihood that Suter will be thrown into the bullpen if/when Miley is added, the team is suddenly lefty-heavy there. It's too bad, too, as Ramirez has proven that he deserves a shot with the big club, and his ability to serve as a pinch hitter and end-of-the-bench 1B/OF could prove valuable.

If you can throw strikes with your left hand you'll always have a shot at the bigs. I don't Hader really impacts Ramirez at all since they don't have the same role. Probably the same with Jennings.
