christian bethancourt minor league deal; non-roster invitee

they have to move a catcher off the 40 man or maybe Webb

Webb has very good numbers in AAA as well as two option years remaining, there are a lot of players who should be moved off the 40-man before he is. He's someone who would 100% be claimed on waivers, as a team need not have a 25-man spot for him, only an opening on the 40-man roster.

Bandy, having no options, is by far the most likely catcher to be traded or DFAd. Wang and Drake should be among the prime candidates on the pitching side. Jungmann and Lopez shouldn't feel too safe either.

Drake, Jungmann, Guerra, Lopez, Wang, Webb, a catcher or two, one or Perez/Aguilar, and at least one outfielder have a decent shot of being removed from the 40 man. Guerra/Jungmann are out of options, drake may be as well. One of Perez/Aguilar won't fit on the 25 man. We have 5 catchers, at most we'd keep 4 but as noted above probably 3. We have 5 outfielders and 4 spots on the 25 man. The rest of the pitchers, lopez/wang/webb...have options which should help keep them on the 40.

Why do they have to move anyone off the 40 man?

it has been reported that boone logan has signed a major league contract with the brewers. the 40-man is currently full.

And the team's intrepid beat reporters seem to be on hiatus. I mean, shouldn't something have come out by now on what is going on roster-wise? Perhaps the placed a player on waivers, and a deal is being worked out?

Got it, yes, a spot needs to be opened up for Boone. But this is the Bethancourt thread, so I thought people were implying a spot needed to be opened up for him.

No harm in signing this guy to a minor league deal. At the very least, he gives them another catcher to help handle the load early in ST. If he shows any kind of life, he'll be good insurance to stash in the minors.

As to the glut of catcher we have, there has to be a trade coming at some point. We have extra catchers and extra outfielders, so something is going to happen before too long.

[sarcasm]This is the relief pitcher signing we've all been waiting for![/sarcasm]

But seriously I hope they don't completely give up on him as a pitcher. He throws pretty hard with movement.

Only problem was that he had no clue where it was moving

You can say that for the majority of hard throwing minor leaguers and a lot of hard throwing major leaguers. I remember everyone gushing over Johny Hellweg but his fastball was like a 16 year old driving on ice for the first time. Bethancourt has pretty much shown he has less than zero bat and, other than his arm, his defensive skills aren't highly regarded. You can find a no bat/below average defense catcher anywhere. Maybe he can actually turn in to a pitcher.
