Boone Logan - $2.5M guaranteed

Logan was asked if he’s still feeling his way since returning from the disabled list.

“That’s the million-dollar question,” he said. “Honestly, I feel pretty sharp right now. I just think it’s a couple minor adjustments I need to make against lefties. At the end of the day I need to get those outs. I’ve got one job to do and I haven’t really been doing it against lefties at all.

“It’s a small sample size. I’m confident I’ll turn it around. But trying to figure it out in a tight ballgame in the eighth isn’t ideal. I’ve just got to find a way to get outs.”

-- This scares me. That he feels sharp.... and he can't even get out the handedness that he is supposed to be stellar at.... and then he says its not ideal to be figuring it out while it matters... not only does he think he's sharp but he has no confidence. This is not good. Not at all....

What scares me is trying to figure anything out at the major league level...period.

ESPECIALLY for a 13 year vet. Agreed.

If he's still injured, then yes I'm concerned, otherwise I'm siding with the "it's been 11 plate appearances" crowd. The previous three years he faced 261 left handed hitters and held them to a .189/.293/.276/.569 line, 12.5 K/9, and a 1.10 WHIP. I would like that weapon in the bullpen and am willing to give it a bit more time.

No confidence? He literally says "I'm confident I'll turn it around."

As far as "figuring things out at the MLB level," every MLB player does this every day to one degree of another. It's a game of adjustments.

I have no investment in Logan, at all. If he fails, move on to the next. But this is way too early to determine that, and he was used the way he should be used on Sunday. Against a string of LH. You just can't have a reliever in the pen you only use when you're up or down 8 runs.

Boone Logan has pitched two innings people...breath. That’s like demanding to release a starter after one start. You gotta give him time. I mean at least 10 appearances at the very least to not sound completely reactionary.

10 appearances? I'm not calling for Logan's immediate release. But LOOGYs are a little bit different animal. If they're not getting it done a good 80% of the time against lefties, you don't wait around all that long waiting for it to happen.

This is not calling for Hader to go to AAA after 2 bad appearances or Yelich to be benched after an 0 for 15 stretch. This is much closer to a Tommy Milone 'cut your losses and move on' situation. You don't need to be all that patient with a 33 year journeyman with a career 4.48 ERA and 1.45 WHIP.

I tend to agree with Plush here, it's actually been 5 total appearances for Boone Logan coming off an extended absence. The stuff is there, his location has been a problem. Boone Logan needs a bit of low leverage work to sharpen his command up, but I don't think cutting him is a good idea at this point. This also isn't tommy milone where the guy threw like 89-90 with mediocre at best off speed stuff. Logan has decent velocity and sharp break to his slider...just has to avoid middle middle.

I will agree that a bit more time on his rehab assignment would have been helpful, especially in a case like his.

Same here, relief pitchers have bad games here and there. Being off injury you see an excuse and yes I get that we can't throw away games. Maybe a mistake was made in how quickly he was brought back or not given more AAA time to sharpen the command. But that doesn't mean he's not going to be fine going forward, just don't know and baseball is the last game to jump to conclusions in. The fastball was 95 and you could see a good bite on the slider/curve, whichever he uses. Get the command in line and hopefully he'll be ok. It's not like watching Drake where his stuff and delivery looked bad and the ball was always up.

Find him a couple innings in non-close games and see how it looks.

I'm not saying Logan needs to go now, I was more expressing disagreement with the 10 appearances suggestion. If Logan has 9 total appearances like the 2 he's had so far he is not going to be around long enough to find out how the 10th would go. Honestly, 2 or 3 more like the one he's had would probably be enough for a pink slip if he doesn't have a few good ones to mix in there.

A LOOGY doesn't get 10 appearances to figure it out.

I misread the post, I thought you referred to him making 10 appearances. I'm willing to be patient with Logan because the stuff has been there, but it's going to be tough to carry him too much longer without improvement based on the arms we have. I'd really like for him to pitch in a blowout game and face maybe 6 or 7 hitters, RH and LH. Give the guy 30-35 pitches in an outing and let him work on his command a bit. It's tough to really nail down your command when every pitch is critical and you only throw maybe 6 or 7 of each pitch type to all different locations of the plate in each outing.

I think it's fairly clear he should be the mop up reliever at this point, even Lopez is ahead of Logan in the pecking order for even mildly critical roles for me. I personally would give him at least 4 or 5 appearances in non-critical roles before deciding anything, and if that didn't work I'd try to find a way to DL him and send him on a long rehab outing.

If you need an ole fashioned therapeutic Boone Logan meltdown then head over to the In-Game Thread, but figured it would be worth posing the question in this thread...

With Boone Logan continuing to pitch poorly against left-handed batters how much longer should the Brewers give him before they move on?

Not just “at Night” anymore.

Feliz got more than double what Logan got and they stopped using him in high leverage situations by the middle of May last year before releasing him all together in June. I can't understand why Counsell would take out a starter with a sub 3 ERA with one on in the 6th inning and replace him with the 6th or 7th best option in the pen.

When I'd like to see Logan go is 2 or 3 appearances ago. When I think he'll go is anyone's guess. Probably not til July.

What I don't get, between Drake and Logan, is why we are so hellbent on having a LOOGY in the pen. We're not lacking for lefties in the pen anyway, and the most stressful lefties in the tightest games are probably going to end up going to Hader by default.

This pen was just fine the first 6 weeks of the season without a LOOGY and would continue to be so without Logan. A LOOGY is supposed to be a luxury, not a source of this much hassle. When you've got a good one, it can be very beneficial. When you have one that isn't, not only is it not beneficial but its actually a major detriment because you're overthinking situations to involve your LOOGY.

It also hurts when your LOOGY is one of the worst pitchers in baseball at getting lefties out. At least Drake could get lefties out sometimes and could be a little useful if used correctly.

This is the big picture here. A lefty specialist is kind of the exception to the "small sample" rule - a lefty specialist has a very specific job, which is to get left-handed hitters out. They don't get 100 innings to figure it out, they don't get 50 innings to figure it out. If they are doing a poor job of getting LHH out and it's been at least 20-25 batters... they are not doing their job.

That being said, today's game wasn't on pen management - it was on getting one run on only five hits and one walk over 9 innings.

Exactly. Everyone points to --small sample, small sample. Well, one or two appearances for a LOOGY is a small sample. When you're starting to pile up a few dozen plate appearances, you don't need to continue to be patient, because for a LOOGY, that's not that small.

A typical effective, worthwhile LOOGY -- I'm ballparking here -- will throw anywhere from 30 to 50 innings in a full season. They will face perhaps 120-130 lefties over the course of the season and you should count on them retiring 90 to 100 and allowing around 30 to reach.

Logan incredibly is already halfway there in a month -- he has allowed a whopping HALF -- 14 of his 28 lefties, to reach.

That all being said I do agree today was lost because of an ineffective offense.

There were many stunning moves by Counsell yesterday, not the least of which was walking Franco to load the basis so your pitcher who had walked almost a batter an inning up to that point had no margin for error. Why not just bring in Barnes or Williams to face Franco?

I really wish Boone could’ve helped us score more runs. Really could’ve helped us win that game yesterday.
"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

I don’t think “oh well, they would have lost anyway” is a good way to evaluate pitcher effectiveness. Based on what you have seen so far are you comfortable with Boone Logan continuing to pitch in close games moving forward?

They don't pay Logan to score runs. They pay him to prevent the opposition from scoring. Something he has proven he is incapable of doing. Pretty easy to figure out, actually.

It was more of a remark to the constant line that Counsell cost us the game yesterday by pitching him. It wasn’t evaluating Boone. We all know he’s struggled since joining the team. It’s also been like 10 innings worth of work. Will he continue to suck? Most likely. Counsell was probably trying to ride the three strikeouts from the night before into something more. It didn’t work. So yeah, oh well. We would’ve lost anyways because we don’t score runs consistently.

The constant line? Literally no one has said that in this thread. In fact, the opposite. Louis even pointed out that the game was in fact lost because of offensive struggles, and I even agreed with him.

Great. Glad you two are on board with scoring more runs. Guess you missed the IGT yesterday and all those comments. You must love conflict. Literally no reason for you to jump at me over anything I said.

#1, as you and I both know, the IGT is always based on spur of the moment reactions, #2, why are you posting those offensive concerns here then in the Logan thread?

#3, sorry you feel jumped on over this and that I am seeking conflict. Didn't think that pointing out that we were all just discussing Logan's future as is appropriate in this thread and mentioning no one was saying Counsell cost us the game here was really all that bad.
