Boone Logan

I saw Mass Haas retweeted this. Anybody familiar with this guy? Fangraphs show he throws 93-94 FB and 83-85 slider, while throwing the slider 50-60% of the time. Career splits would indicate he's primarily a LOOGY. Sounds good to me on a low cost deal. Yet another indicator that Hader is bound for the rotation.

Boone Logan is a year removed from pitching a .139/.222/.225 line to lefties in 46 innings (31 IP to lefties). He's coming off a pretty injury-filled season. Indians had declined his $7M option. #Brewers

If its true, it would help free Hader for rotation consideration.

Logan had some good success as a LOGGY for a few season but seemed to struggle in 2017 as the #2 lefty in the Tribe bullpen. Cleveland had a contract option on him for this season worth $7 million but took the $1 million buyout instead. I don't think any Tribe fans were disappointed in that decision

Based on that, I would like to think a 1 year deal, either minor league or a 2-3 guaranteed would make this a reasonable deal. It will definitely be nice having a LOOGY to face guys like Rizzo/Votto/Carpenter etc late in games. If he signs a major league deal, this must be the guy that punts Drake from the 40.

Agreed, I think this may be a direct replacement for Drake. Not sure if this affects Hader at all (as far as bumping him to the rotation or staying in the pen).

I'm hopeful it does. Hader is more than a LOOGY, but having Logan and likely Suter in the pen gives us less need for a 3rd lefty in the pen. But we definitely could roll 3 lefties in the pen, so you're right there's no guarantee that signing this guy moves Hader to the rotation. But I would call it an indictator and increases that likelihood.

I've always been a fan of Logan. Last year he tore a back muscle in July. I don't think he had surgery but Cleveland put him on the 60 day DL when it happened (mid-July) and he never returned so I was under the impression that it was fairly serious.

The thing from last year that really jumps out is that he had a 4.71 ERA but a 3.16 FIP. The BABIP against him was a pretty high .353 so maybe that ERA had more to do with bad luck than anything else.

I wouldn't bring him in strictly as a lefty specialist. Last couple seasons he's been pretty decent against right handed hitters although before that results were pretty mixed, some real bad seasons versus righties but some decent ones in there as well.

I'm all for bringing him in if his back is OK.

I heard the Boone Logan report was accurate and should be official soon after New Year’s. Besides that, it should be a very busy six weeks all around baseball.

It's after New Years...

Not for the Brewers' beat writers apparently ...

If there's no news yet, there's no need for a beat writer to tell us there's no news yet. Besides, Haudricourt was on Twitter today touching on the Cain rumors.

If there's indeed some trade action or other player movement eventually afoot, it's possible the Brewers would need that move (or those moves) to create roster space so making Logan's signing official and adding him to the 40-man roster doesn't mean DFA'ing someone unnecessarily.

It's also possible Logan's signing could be a minor-league/NRI deal.

i wonder if it'd be possible to structure the deal around the pending opening when jimmy nelson could be placed on the 60-day disabled list. the brewers could sign logan to a minor league deal with an invite to spring training, with a buyout clause if he isn't added to 40-man by the time nelson can be put on the 60-man. i'd work up something ridiculous like a $10 million buyout if he's not added to the 40-man by date x in spring training, knowing full well that the brewers plan to guarantee logan a spot on the 25-man roster.

IMO Logan is too good of a pitcher to sign a split contract or a minor league deal this early. Things are much different if it gets to February 20 and there is still no MLB offer, then you have to take what you can get. Over the last three years Logan has a 4.12 ERA, 3.35 WHIP, 115 ERA+, 11.3 K/9, 2.8 K/BB. Overall his numbers are way too good to be settling for a minor league deal in the first week of January.

Closing this thread, as Logan signed for $2.5M. New thread opened in Major League forum
