Dude was terrible away from Petco. Like Wily Peralta bad.

You mean that one year that he wasn't in Colorado? His numbers look like a solid, serviceable guy. I'm not familiar with what he throws. Also, this isn't a done deal yet. Closing in on an agreement...

2017

Home 9-3 1.79 ERA

Road 4-7 6.53 ERA

ugh, i am sure the petco numbers got him paid too

Barf. This offseason is a nightmare so far for me.

We'll see if something bigger comes up, but it looks like the Brewers are looking for stopgaps until Nelson is healthy and the prospects are ready. Hopefully this is just a one-year deal for an "innings eater." He could put up okay numbers, but I wouldn't count on that for 3-4 years.

Edit: If this is that case (one year deal to a vet), I'm fine with this deal. The Brewers either needed to do something big for a guy who could be their ace for the next few seasons, or something like this to fill a rotation spot as our prospects continue development.

Substitute Gallardo for Hader, Gallardo to the pen. That makes more sense.

Just have the feeling that it is not going to be that though. That they'll keep Hader pen't up. Extremely annoying to continue down this road of pitching guys that have little to no upside.

Agreed. We were never getting a top notch pitcher on a one year deal. I'd rather go this route than pay a Lynn/Cobb anywhere near their asking price. I wouldn't say this completely closes the door on a big trade for Archer, but making that move likely means Hader to the pen...which would be nothing short of disappointing.

I don't think Stearns is that dense. It may fail, but there is at least some shrewd method to the madness.

I think Hader is in the rotation, and if he isn't, there's probably a really good reason for it. Maybe we're going full-blown analytics mode on pitching if so and Hader pitches innings 4-7 every 5 days on average.

I wouldn't say it closes the door on Archer but I don't know if it ever was very likely. If they went after Archer they could always include Woodruff in the deal.

Also, remember that:

1. Anderson

2. Davies

3. Chacin

4. Woodruff

5. Hader

will be supplemented with the return of Nelson and the addition of guys like Burns at some point in the season.

chacin was last optioned in 2015, but he spent less than 20 days optioned that year, so his final option was not burned.

he has enough service time to refuse an optional assignment to the minor leagues, but in doing so, he would void his contract and become a free agent.

While this isn't that exciting, i'm glad that Stearns and co seem to be taking a measured approach to building the team. 2017 was more successful than anyone probably could have expected, but i'm glad they're not going full on Bill Bavasi Mariners in case the entire team takes a step back in 2018.

Newer metrics paint Chacin in a favorable light, as well; Statcast pegs Chacin’s average exit velocity on balls in the air (91.3 mph) and overall exit velocity (85.4 mph) among the weakest in the game for qualified pitchers. His .303 xwOBA, while not elite, places him alongside names like Danny Duffy, Jake Arrieta and Madison Bumgarner. That’s not to say, of course, that Chacin should be expected to produce at comparable levels to those three starters, but rather that his solid results and overall penchant for weak contact could be more conducive to success than his surface-level home/road splits would suggest.

Get this guy hurling 40-50% sliders or more, which is clearly his best pitch. Even better results hopefully would follow.

This may be a stretch ... but signing two of the same pitcher (vet/filler) in YoGa and Chacin makes me think something bigger is happening? Could Anderson or Davies be a part of a package that would bring Archer back?

I think it means that the Brewers are filling out their roster without spending big money on a FA pitcher or spending big in terms of prospects for a trade. While not sexy, it's probably the prudent thing to do.

I'd argue that Gallardo and Chacin aren't "the same pitcher." As a starter, Chacin has been much better than Gallardo. I think Chacin is being signed to fill a spot in the rotation, while Gallardo was signed as a multi-inning reliever.

In a perfect world, Hader will start until Nelson is ready, then be moved back to the pen or shut down to keep his innings in check. Burns and Wilkerson will be the replacements when someone gets hurt. Then Hader, Burns and Wilkerson will all be ready to compete for spots in the 2019 rotation.

We'll see how much faith Stearns is putting in Chacin when we see the number of years. If it's a one-year deal, he's basically filler until Burns is ready, and is a flip candidate at deadline. If it's a multi-year deal, then Stearns probably looked at numbers like those Brew4U posted and thinks he is a nice "sleeper" middle-of-the-rotation arm for a few years until more of our prospects are ready.

He killed righties at home and on the road. Really, the only issues he had were lefties on the road for some reason. Could become a situational guy in the bullpen worst case scenario.
