Wait, someone actually thought he would make the team?

As an attempt to stash as many starters into the depth chart as possible... yes. Not because he's good. We kept Milone.

It is possible that Stearns learned something from the Milone debacle and wasn't going to keep Gallardo just because he kept Milone last season.......I mean he is a pretty smart guy.

Always amazes me that people think that because a smart guy makes a decision that doesn't work out that they will do it again.....just because.

I saw him pitch once in Arizona. He was throwing the ball well. I didn't understand why he got a major league deal though I still think he can pitch. Guessing Hoover gets his roster spot and Drake stays. Guerra will be starting depth in CS?

The bummer for Yo is that he didn't really pitch himself out of a job, he just ran into a circumstance where pretty much the entire pen had a very nice spring.

It was probably more or less Gallardo vs. Hoover for a spot and Hoover beat him. Either way, he gets half a million dollars for a spring audition so hardly the end of the world for him.

He might get his entire salary. Sounds like there is trade possibilities.

The team mentioned the desire for roster flexibility. This tells me Williams, who could be optioned later, gets the last spot for now.

Really sad that Yo didn't make the team.

Why? Seriously, why?

What did you expect from him?

I'm not sad at all, in fact I'm actually sad anyone thought he had anything left to give us. Looking at his past two seasons, it was pretty easy to tell he was signed probably more-so as a favor to him for his previous time he spent with us.

I don't think anyone actually expected him to make this team.

Because I like him and I think he can contribute in the bullpen.

I'm not sure how you look at Yo's recent past and then suggest he has anything to contribute.

but it's not like every guy suddenly forgot every piece of advice he gave

I think for some folks it's definitely partly nostalgia, and he even said "because I like him". I think (and maybe I'm mis-characterizing other's thoughts) is that the "sad" part is that people are sad that Yo no longer has the stuff to get people out and be a contributing part of the Brewers, even in a reduced/pen capacity. At least that's my take on it.

I thought he had a shot to make the team and I don't think he was signed with any intention to just do him a solid for the past. When they signed him I imagine the intention was that he had a reasonable chance to make the roster if things went well for him. Unfortunately for him things went much better for Hoover.

But yeah I don't get why it's sad unless he just means sad from a "He was a very good pitcher for the Brewers and I'm grateful for the great years he gave us" kind of way. Which I can understand. I think Gallardo's Milwaukee legacy probably isn't as appreciated as it should be. Yo is the 2nd best homegrown pitcher of the last 25 years here. Nelson may surpass him at some point but as of right now it's Yo, no doubt.

With that said from a business perspective I'm glad we have moved past the need to include a 30 something veteran pitcher on his last legs on every Opening Day roster.

Initially, I expected Yo to make the team as a long reliever/spot starter type of guy.

But if the guy didn't look good in camp, I'm glad we aren't keeping him. I'm tired of keeping guys who are obviously not quality players anymore. There just isn't any upside to keeping a player like Yo - even if I like the guy.

Drake. Frigging Drake beat you Gallardo. Sad.

Maybe a swap is in the works... or maybe Yo's agreed to come back to Colorado Springs.

If he pitched decently, I'd like to have him for depth.

It's pretty easy. Yo's velocity was up last year. And players his age frequently have a couple solid-to-good years left in them. Moyer was pretty crappy until age 30, and didn't start consistently throwing well until age 33. John Lackey? It sounded like Yo was willing to work on things, and I would hope he'd consider signing with the Brewers for some AAA depth on a minor league contract.

I'd love to have Yo at CS as a sort of "veteran lottery ticket" if his being there doesn't hinder a viable prospect's chances to develop. I'm not sure his MLB results the past 2 years or even this spring are going to gain him a spot at this point on anyone's MLB 25-man roster.

I'm sure it was posted somewhere previously on Brewerfan, but Yo got $500,000 when he was released. I know we're talking baseball money and not "real world " but that seems like money poorly spent. I personally never thought Yo had much of a chance to make the team. And if he would've made the team I expect he would have been one of the first pitchers cut. I think Yo is done. Good luck with the Reds though. Thanks for the memories

Agreed on the money poorly spent. Last two seasons he had a 5.57 ERA, 5.30 FIP, 1.55 WHIP and a K/BB of 1.48. I'm not really sure what part of that equation indicates he should have been anything other than a non-roster invitee? Everybody was freaking out over the Jesse Chavez possibility, and rightfully so. But over the last couple of years Chavez had been much better than Gallardo. Even Matt Garza's numbers from 2016-2017 were better much better than Gallardo: 4.74 ERA, 4.64 FIP, 1.48 WHIP, 1.84 K/BB.

Worst ERA, minimum 200 innings pitched, 2016-2017:

1. Ubaldo Jimenez = 6.13

2. Anibal Sanchez = 6.09

3. Tyler Duffey = 5.91

4. Derek Holland = 5.65

5. James Shields = 5.60

6. Jordan Zimmermann = 5.60

7. Yovani Gallardo = 5.57

8. Matt Cain = 5.52

9. Jered Weaver = 5.51

10. Mike Pelfrey = 5.50

Worst FIP, minimum 200 innings pitched, 2016-2017:

1. Jared Weaver = 6.10

2. James Shields = 5.94

3. Mike Pelfrey = 5.75

4. Derek Holland = 5.69

5. Ariel Miranda = 5.60

6. Hector Santiago = 5.50

7. Yovani Gallardo = 5.30

8. Chris Tillman = 5.18

9. Anibal Sanchez = 5.17

10. Matt Cain = 5.10
