The worst part of this would be if Gallardo getting a rotation spot means they keep Hader in the bullpen and continuing wasting his potential.

I don't agree with this at all. I'd like to see Hader start, BUT he was pretty awful last year with command. He's a pitcher that's wild in the zone. He needs to spend a year honing his mechanics, learning to attack hitters, integrating secondary pitches, and figuring out how to hit spots. I think another year in the pen where he pitches frequently is a good option.

Looks like a cheap Chris Tillman signing or Trading for Matt Moore. The brewers only have 2 proven locks for the rotation. I'm assuming it can't be much over 4 million. So it doesn't impact other resources being allocated toward adding another starter or pen arms. Not seeing the downside here.

My theory that Stearns thinks the roster vastly over performed last year and doesn't want to spend prospects or money for upgrades that won't get us to the playoffs is looking more and more realistic.

I totally agree...we need two tank years so we can get a bregman or correia type player.

Earlier in the week in the thread about Jesse Chavez, I said "if you are going to shop at that level, why not just bring back Yo. At least he was good at one time"

I was half kidding. Maybe the vendors were complaining about Garza not coming back? Seems to me Yo was not exactly a fast worker either.

Encouraged to read that Gallardo's velocity was up last year and his swinging strike rate was the highest since 2011. Anyone else think J J Hardy would make a nice option at 2B?

This is exactly the issue. YG is a space filler, not a guy a contender would sign to a major league deal.

Hmm, I don't get it. My 1st Stearns move that I'm completely baffled at, and in disagreement with. I'll wait to see the agreement. Competition for the 5th starter or bullpen I guess. At least his velocity hasn't completely left him. There's some hope he's useful.

Didn't exactly see that one coming!

You must have missed my post in the Jesse Chavez thread. That was a sign that Stearns was looking at the bottom of the bin.

What's Claudio Vargas doing these days? Tomorrow we may hear about John Axford signing a 2 year deal to be the set up man.

How does that help him work on his command? They should either give him a chance in the rotation or, if they think his command still needs work, send him down to start in AAA where he's not pitching to matchups or in high leverage situations

The only thing clear about this signing is that some of you are reading WAY too much into it.

Stearns does nothing ---> WHY AREN'T WE DOING ANYTHING

Stearns makes a virtual no risk unlimited upside signing ---> WHY IS STEARNS DOING SOMETHING

Some people just can't be pleased. At times I wonder if we traded for Kershaw if even then it would be a bad move. I see absolutely nothing wrong with getting another veteran arm in here cheap. He can only help the team, if not he will be gone and no harm done. What is the problem?

Well said!

The Brewers do have a heckuva pitching coach. Maybe he can help

Yo turn it around. If not, no big deal.

I suspected the Brewers would bring in a one-year contract innings eater type player - someone like RA Dickey or John Lackey. I guess Gallardo is sort of that guy - just not as healthy and not as good (which means pretty bad).

I'm not thrilled at the move - primarily since it's a guaranteed deal. The team is obviously trying to fill a rotation spot for cheap, but I wish they had done a minor league deal. Just said to Yo, 'hey, the spot's yours if you look okay.' But now we'll feel compelled to keep him even if he stinks.

Hopefully, it's a low, low salary so we can cut bait if needed.

From the JSOnline article:

"The Brewers likely have reached a low-risk agreement with Gallardo that will allow them to assess during spring training if he can help their starting rotation."

Given how lousy he's been the past two years, when I read that quote in a Haudricourt tweet earlier today, I wondered if it may be a non- or only minimally-guaranteed deal. If this was Yo's only major league contract offer vs. one or more minor league/NRI deals, then a one-year, non-guaranteed MLB contract still probably holds more promise than a minor league deal.

I also think there are probably a couple Drake- or Webb-type guys on the roster who could be DFA'd readily enough if one or more roster spots needed to be opened for other acquisitions.

Agreed, im underwhelmed as well. I hope he's a near veteran minimum guy that was brought in for spring depth and competition. If he looks serviceable in spring and none of our internal options claim the 5th spot with a big spring, give him a shot for a few months until burnes/nelson are ready.

Or maybe he's being brought in for a potential bullpen role with hopes his stuff plays up a bit in that role. Plenty of guys move to the pen successfully later in their careers. Maybe Stearns doesn't think we need a 5th starter as he's more aware of nelsons recovery than everyone else.

That's my best effort to try and justify the move. In Stearns I trust.
