Delmon Young

Recommended Posts

No, Delmon doesn't draw many comparisons to his brother other than the fact that he is drawing an incredible amount of attention in Southern California for his hitting ability alone. Delmon has a better, leaner & more athletic frame than big brother Dmitri, and also projects to hit for more power down the road.

As for a major league comparison, I've thrown Austin Kearns out there before, but keep in mind that really is a best case scenario. Similar hitting ability, frame, power potential, overall athleticism, arm, etc.

And even if he turns out like his brother Dmitri, that's a heck of a lot better than how most draft picks turn out. Keep in mind, the #2 pick is anything but a sure thing, and if we get a guy that plays for close to 10 years while hitting in the .300/.350/.450 range during that time (not looking at stats, just guessing as to where Dmitri Young is at), that pick still has to be considered a good one.

You don't draft a player who at best could turn into Dmitri Young at #2, but if you have a prospect that ends up that way it should be considered a victory. As usual Dmitri's problem is that he got overpaid. As a young player hitting well over .300 with decent power coming off the bench and even being an acceptable place holder in LF, 1st, 3rd, RF is pretty good. He'd give you about league average hitting.

you will probably hear Young compared to Eric Chavez. Not because of similarities in style, but because they may be the two most successful high school players in CA history. I believe Chavez is the only CA HS player that has won the POY award twice and Young will become #2 if he wins this year.

Well said igor.

And I was trying to project Young as a right-handed hitter, as Floyd & Chavez are both lefties. Lefty hitters & righty hitters are completely different IMO.

Manny Ramirez might another best-case scenario comparison.

I guess am one of the few here who doesn't think Dmitri Young is a bad player. Consider that the Tigers offense is the worst in MLB by far and is filled with AAA players. Do you think opposing pitchers will let a proven career .300 batter like Young beat them? No; they are pitching around Dmitri. He's been hot with the bat lately. He's had a few monster games : 5-5 with 2HR, 2 3B, 1 1B and one where he was a homer short of the cycle. Dmitri Young is not a bad player. He is playing 3B when a left-hander is on the mound, but most nights he is the DH or LF.

Delmon Young worked out for the D-Rays recently and the papers said he was hitting line shots all over the field. The Tigers were in town playing the D-Rays and our scouting director watched him as well. Everyone was really impressed. He looks like the real deal.

I have no reason for this, but something tells me that Delmon isn't the guy for the Brewers. It's just a felling I have. All of the reports that have been posted point to a promising player, possibly worthy of the second pick. But I just feel as though something is rotten in the state of Denmark. Most likly I'm just pulling for Loewen to fall to the Crew. Aren't we due several hundred million breaks for all the years of crap, lots of crap and oh what's that over there-- yep, it's crap.

You may get your wish if Loewen doesn't sign with the Orioles. In a draft chat Baseball America said that the Devil Rays are considering only Delmon Young, Rickie Weeks and Ryan Harvey regardless of whether Loewen returns to the draft. The speculation is that Rickie Weeks is the favorite and the Devil Rays have certainly focused on position players of late (even though their pitching is awful.) Sources have said that the chances of the O's signing Loewen are 50/50. The Orioles owner, Peter Angelos, doesn't want to pay more than 2.5 million to him unless a strong case is made to go over that amount because of all of the money Angelos has paid out to pitchers that have amounted to nothing. Loewen wants 3.9 million at the least. My guess it that it goes down to the last minute whether he signs or doesn't.

I think Loewen would be a good pick up for the Brewers. He is certainly worthy of the number two pick in the draft and you seem to have more offense in your organization than pitching.
