Manny Machado

Machado is very good but not great. Too much money it will take. No thanks.

If this dude can play gold glove level defense at SS 300 mil over 10 years isn't a crazy ask. I wouldn't freak out if mke offered it. A bat like that at that position changes an entire batting orders potential. After 6-7 years he can move back to 3rd.

Now would he sign here... id doubt it... im giving nothing for 1 year of him so that he can bolt to la or ny.

Intentional Talk said yesterday the Cubs and Orioles were continuing dialogue on a deal. Supposedly that deal was Albert Almora Jr., Addison Russell and Mike Montgomery for Manny Machado. While it would stink to face Bryant Rizzo Machado for a year, that would severely deplete their youth while also hampering their quest to deal for quality SP. Not sure I would like that deal even if I were a Cubs fan as it really eliminates depth and almost requires Baez, Schwarber and Heyward become everyday players.

One would think any Cub deal for Machado would force them to throw the money truck at him after giving up more of their young talent...which would also hamper them from going after other free agents next offseason. If there are no other serious offers, why not wait until the deadline and try to acquire him for even lower value?

Also, if they really wanted him, why not just wait until next offseason and sign him as a free agent then? I don't see him as a fit for the Cubs as they are currently built, seeing that both Russell and Baez are solid shortstops, and Bryant is their 3B.

Machado won't sign an extension. If he would, then Baltimore wouldn't be trading him. But based on some posters' premise that the Brewers could afford to sign him to an extension (which is highly doubtful), then just let the Cardinals empty their farm for him and sign him after the season when he's a free agent and won't cost us the prospects.

In no way should the Brewers trade what it would take to get Machado for one season. I'd hate that move even if we were further along in our rebuild, but it makes absolutely no sense this offseason.

"The most successful (people) know that performance over the long haul is what counts. If you can seize the day, great. But never forget that there are days yet to come."

Please make this trade Chicago.

I agree, that would make this almost an "all in" year for them. They can always resign Machado I guess, but I'm thinking the Brewers take a small step back this year so if the Cubs want to sell off their future for this year, I'm all for it.

Resigning Machado still doesn't address their lack of starting pitching. Even though money generally won't be an issue for Chicago, having big contracts for Heyward and Machado will probably prevent them from throwing big money at Bryant, Rizzo, Harper, or any worthwhile free agent pitcher.

Machado wants to go back to playing shortstop.

That's exactly my point - why Chicago would trade away Russell or Baez, two more than capable SS's with several more years of team control before hitting free agency, to bring back 1 year of Machado at SS before being forced to fork over huge $ to resign him, is craziness.

If I'm the Cubs, I'd be much more inclined to include some of their young position player talent in a trade for starting pitching, not for more position player talent that's about to get crazy expensive.

I'm sure Baltimore is insisting on those two. Because they really have no clue what they're doing and think that they can still compete without Machado despite having probably the worst pitching in baseball.

The rumor generally makes some degree of sense for both clubs. The Cubs giving up a lot of spare parts, but acquiring a premium player during their window...it's vintage Theo. He tends to make bold, decisive moves for premium players and clearly subscribes to the all-in window theory. He will probably bolt from when things start to suck in a handful of years, but that's besides the point. I don't doubt this rumor at all. It would be really hard to look past a very annoying year to a more promising future if the Cubs made this trade, the obnoxiousness of 2018 may be unbearable.
