Christian Yelich

Brinson has yet to prove lately that he can even stay healthy for a full season, much less be a 30/30 player at the MLB level.

Yes, his upside is high. He wouldn't be considered as a centerpiece for Yelich if he wasn't. You have to give up something to get something.

But he also has a fairly high bust risk, whereas Yelich is already established as a very high level MLB player, and is controlled for a similar amount of time as Brinson is.

Without knowing who is going, let's play a quick 2-6 lineup game:

2. Yelich

3. Braun

4. Shaw

5. Santana

6. Thames

That is legit!

I firmly believe Yelich bats leadoff if we trade for him.

Agreed. Maybe he’d move to 2 or 3 if he ends until being a 30+HR bat, but right now he’s an ideal lead off

Admittedly, the problem with trading Brinson in a package for Yelich is that makes all the other MLB outfielders much less expendable. The route to get pitching at that point would likely be signing a FA rather than another trade, which is fine by me.

It's funny. In a vacuum, I would probably prefer the Brewers keep Santana over Brinson. But in this scenario, I'd prefer to trade Santana for Yelich. Brinson in CF and Yelich in RF is a nice defensive setup.

I imagine the Marlins definitely prefer Brinson to Santana due to the longer team control, though.

Yelich already a good hitter (.290/.369/.432 career slash line) with 20-20 probability. But would you do Brinson, Ortiz and Diaz, as has been suggested, for four years of Yelich? And then do you deal Santana? I guess I am conflicted.

Well I guess I look at it as Santana would likely be dealt for pitching. For argument's sake, let's say it is for Danny Salazar. So the Brewers are trading Santana, Brinson, Ortiz and Diaz for Yelich and Salazar. At this point, and given the age and contract status of the players involved, I think the Brewers would be getting the two best players for the next 4-5 years in the deal. Yelich is better than Brinson and Santana. Salazar is probably Ortiz's ceiling as well.

Ortiz is the SP prospect I would most like to deal and while losing Diaz would be tough, you have Dubon and then Hiura to potentially fill that void. Not to mention the (small) possibility of a Villar turnaround.

I think the Brewers make this type of deal if this is what it costs.

Been calling for this trade since November, hopefully it gets done. I'd be okay with Brinson because I love Yelich's offensive game and consistency. Miller Park isn't a home field either where hitters come and fall off too often. Think HRs will increase. He could be a 30/30 guy who hits .300 imo. Think he is at least a 20/20 moving forward. Still young, filling out, and maturing. Power has already seen a jump, with age, should continue.

I suppose you could send Brinson to Miami, trade Santana for pitching, and then go back to the Yankees for the Ellsbury+prospect+salary relief thing.

Braun in left, Ellsbury/Broxton in CF, Yelich in right, with Phillips backing up all three is strong offensively and acceptable defensively.

I would go as high as Brinson+Ortiz+Diaz. I think that would be my best offer.

No way, not a chance, if that happens, I quit. :ohwell

I'd probably want Barraclough back as well for that package, but I'd do it.

Getting Barraclough back would be awesome. I think you're underrating Yelich, Turbo. And the value his contract adds.

I just don't see the value in Yelich. If we are going to give up prospects of that caliber, it should be for a rotation upgrade.

But that's not easy, and would cost much more in terms of cash or prospects. Look at how the price for Darvish is spiraling up. And 5 years for a 31 year old, if that's true? For a guy who's really good but not elite.

It is so tough to get a guy better than Nelson, Anderson, etc. Nobody wants to give up a young, controllable stud pitcher. That doesn't mean you can't make the team better in other ways. Yelich gives you one thing they need in the OF- LH bat.

Santana for Salazar, straight up? That's not happening. Crew would have to add pieces to make this happen. And then you are talking about trading at least four prospects for Yelich and Salazar, which would seem to indicate an all-in mentality, which goes against what Stearns has preached.

I agree that Ortiz appears to be the weak link among top prospect pitchers, so I wouldn't be crushed to see him go.

Yelich is what Brinson would hopefully be and is easily worth more. The odds are slim Brinson will even be as good as Yelich, let alone better.

And I like Brinson and would hope to get Yelich without giving him up (unlikely) but Yelich has already proven to be really good

How many times has Yelich posted a 30/30 season? Heck how many times has he even done one of those? Brinson is also far and away the superior defender. If Brinson can make enough contact to hit 270-280, he'll be light years ahead of Yelich and a legit superstar.

I've never heard of Brinson being an elite defender and actually read questions to it. It's assumed Speed will lead to great defense. The best Brinson's speed has gotten him in a season is 24SBs when he was 19. I honestly feel Brinson won't be great on the basepaths and not reach 25 or more SBs in any full season. Brinson has had troubles with his OB ability previously and I think he's a guy who varies a .345 year with a .319 year. Yelich is Gold with .360+.

Yelich for Brinson, Ortiz and Diaz at this stage would be a steal. Probably have to throw in a 2nd SP prospect like a Pennington or Lemons. Is that deal really big, yeah but you're getting Elite in return vs Prospects. Elite entering his Prime years controlled in all of them. And already posted his H/A splits for his career it is 80pts OPS better on the road. That's not a small sample anymore.

Brinson is Marlins target... MLBTR just updated Yelich story.

If they wanted Acuna from the Braves then this shouldn't be a surprise. This does seem to have some legs though. Other teams might be able to offer a better top end prospect but the Brewers may be a little deeper. Wouldn't hurt to know who else is involved.

but it's not like every guy suddenly forgot every piece of advice he gave

I will lose zero sleep trading Brinson to Miami.

Not sure how knowledgeable this guy is but........

McCalvy quoted it in a tweet of his own, for me that provides significantly more credibility. A trade for Yelich is one of my least desired off-season moves of the possiblities floated to this point.

If that is true you really must not like anything. 4 WAR players who play decent defense and are ascending with 370 OBPs and 300 averages with 20 HR and 15 steals must really be terrible baseball players.

How much sleep I'd lose would be based on the other pieces in the deal.

The Marlins lost all three of their OFs - cheap major league OFs will have value to them, thus I think Broxton would have value. If Brinson and Broxton are in the deal, and then the trade of Santana to the Indians goes through with Kipnis being one of the pieces coming back, then I could see the Brewers targeting Cain. Kipnis and Yelich add LH bats, and unless the Brewers add multiple LH bats I don't see them pursuing Cain.

If they were to acquire Yelich I will shut up and be very happy... But Stearns has worked very hard to acquire top prospects, I really want to see how this all plays out in the next few seasons. If they are trading Brinson, I would hope it were for front line pitching, and not Archer or some 2-3 year then watch them leave. A legit top pitching prospect. So I can only hope there are other move in the works. Brinson could just as easily be Yelich in a season or two.

Your points are fair, but Yelich is likely acquired to allow Santana to be moved to acquire pitching. I would think losing Brinson in a deal like this should be looked at in the whole picture of moves that end up taking place, rather than just within this deal.
