Good resort style hotel in the area for a weeks stay

gebc1997

May be coming to Milwaukee for a weeks worth of games August 20-26 of next year, and am looking for a good resort style hotel for a family of 4 or 5 with teenage and older children to stay.

Looking for good pools and luxury if possible.

Any ideas

Thanks

The Grand Geneva is the best resort in the area but it is an hour drive from downtown Milwaukee

If I would decide to stay downtown , what can I do to occupy my time on a summer weekday afternoon in downtown Milwaukee until the games start??

There are festivals pretty much all summer. You can head down to the beach. Spending a few hours at the zoo is a good time. Not my cup of tea but there are a ton of brewery tours.

What do you consider a good pool? Slides? A pool that's deep? Something like a basketball hoop set up?

The last time my dad visited he stayed at the Best Western Premier in Brookfield.

It's definitely not a luxury hotel but they updated it in the last few years (when my dad stayed there it screamed 70s) and the pool is awesome. They had a basketball hoop in the shallow end and the deep end is 8 feet with a ledge so you can stand and walk over there if you don't want to swim back to the shallow end.

You're probably not going to find luxury with what you would probably consider a good pool.

That hotel is a pretty good location too. Right next to Brookfield Square Mall, pretty close to Mayfair Mall. 10 minutes to the zoo, 15 minutes to Miller Park, 20 minutes to downtown.

There's the Country Springs Hotel as well but that isn't luxury either and even though it has a water park, it's not that great. Have you thought about staying in Milwaukee and then heading to the Wisconsin Dells for a couple of days? You could stay in a luxury hotel downtown and then get the water park resort style atmosphere at the Dells.

Kohler’s American Club is probably an hour away as I recall. A lot of people like it. If you go there, though, you ought to stay at the main hotel building as it’s the nicer one.

Another thing to consider: pick three hotels and move around to absorb different experiences. We’ve done that. While it’s a slight pain to pack up again, the overall experience is more diverse in a good way.

Irish Fest will probably run 8/16-8/19 but all festival dates are TBD for now. http://county.milwaukee.gov/FestivalEvents

I assume the Cincy and/or Pitt series is on your radar. So then it depends on what else the kids are looking for. Roller coasters are an hour south at Six Flags Great America. They also have Key Lime Cover for a mini indoor water park. Mentioned above Country Springs, Wi Dells, Koehler Club and Grand Geneva are all great places but only Country Springs could you consider being in Milwaukee as it is in a bordering County so it’s close comparatively to the others.

The Sprecher Soda/Beer tour is pretty cool for the kids probably not for the teenager. Teenagers are tough on what they want to do. My teenage girl would want to shop, tan and eat good food. There are boat tours on Lake Michigan as well- like the Edelweiss.

Did they get rid of that indoor pool park thing at the downtown Hilton?

Yes and that place was a pile of crap anyways. There's not a chance teenagers would enjoy that. I doubt an 8 year old would enjoy that place.

If you/your family enjoys the outdoors, there are tons of cool hikes, ranging from 2 miles to 20 miles, to do within an hour of Milwaukee. I'd be happy to infodump with a more in depth post, if you're interested.

As for weekday afternoons in Milwaukee downtown:

The lakefront is easy to spend a day at, whatever festival is happening during that week/weekend could easily be hit at the Summerfest grounds (probably Irish fest that weekend), as is the Art Museum. Simply walking around downtown on the Riverwalk could easily be a day as well.

Wandering to different breweries (if that's your thing) could easily be done.

Tons of good food options to explore downtown - from $10 to $50 a meal. Milwaukee has a sneaky good food scene.
