Jake Arrieta

DR28
We don't even know if the Cubs actually don't want him back. It seems no one is interested in Arrieta because Darvish JUST NEEDS TO SIGN ALREADY(rant over). There was one report a few weeks beack that the Cubs would consider Arrieta if they failed to get Darvish.

If the Cubs, who desperately need a starting pitcher, don't want him we don't either and that is that.

It's literally that simple.

They desperately need a SP????????????

Lester/Hendricks/Quintana/Chatwood/Montgomery

Far from a need.............

Then why go for Darvish?

Cuz they want to keep him away from us.

Possibly they'd like to have Montgomery coming out of the pen? They'd more than likely have the money to sign Darvish if he chose to go

And let's face it - teams rarely go through a season using only 5 SP's. Usually you need AT LEAST 6-7 SP's, and I'm sure that the Cubs would love to have Montgomery in that swing role again where he could step into the rotation throughout the season as needed.

I sure hope not.

Innings last three years: 229, 197, 168

FIP: 2.35, 3.52, 4.16

H/9: 5.9, 6.3, 8.0

HR/9: 0.4, 07, 1.2

Looks like a trend to me.

Signing Arrieta will be the worst decision they could make. It will offset all the good they have done so far this offseason. The guy will be a straight bum soon enough.

So...a few things to keep in mind:

  • The Cubs did try to sign Arrieta to an extension in 2015, and told Arrieta/Boras that they'd be open to signing an extension in 2016 and 2017.
  • The Cubs reportedly offered Arrieta 4/$110M, which is obviously less than he wants for years. The sticking point since 2015 is the number of years.
  • The Cubs don't need a TOR starter, but without one, they're going to have a hard time competing with playoff teams.
  • While the Cubs don't need a TOR starter, they absolutely need starting pitching depth as KeithStone53151 pointed out. In 2015 and 2016 the Cubs had freaky good health in the starting rotation. That took a step back in 2017. Montgomery was pretty good as a fill in, but that needs to be his roll - depth for both the rotation and bullpen.

I think the lack of interest thing is reporters (specifically Nightengale) speculating during a boring off season.

I don't see what 2015, 2016, or even 2017 has to do with NOW. The fact that the Cubs are not in on Arrieta NOW tells me they see something that has made them uninterested. That should be worrisome for other teams.

Also, I do not view Arrieta as a TOR arm any longer. #2, yes.

The Cubs offered Arrieta $110M NOW, so it's clear they don't think he's a husk of a pitcher. And I would argue that a #2 is still at the top of the rotation. The question is whether or not he's a #2 long term.

Maybe things start to shake out now.

yeah I have a feeling there's going to be a flurry of signings and trades this week.

I thought it'd be this weekend. I think things happen quickly now. The crew was behind before this, they are going to need to get serious about picking up pitching.

but it's not like every guy suddenly forgot every piece of advice he gave

MLBTradeRumors had Darvish at 6 years $160MM. He actually got 6/126.

The actual deal was 79% of their prediction.

I can't imagine Arrieta getting higher AAV than Darvish.

So could the brewers get Arrieta for 4/80MM? I'd be surprisingly happy about that, I think.

I'm on record that I think they end up with Odorizzi and Arietta.

Quite possible. I think Archer and Arrieta. I say they go all in. Burnes would definitely be traded. But unlike previous competitive cycles, we'd be going all in for a couple years of contention as opposed to trading for short term success.

Two pitchers trending the wrong direction. Sounds like the Brewers so you’ll probably be right. Oh joy!

To be fair, Darvish is also heading in the wrong direction. Just as old as Arrieta, and really hasn't been as good as Arrieta in the last few years. Numbers are similar the past 2 years, but Darvish is farther removed from his elite pitching days (2013 Darvish vs 2015 Arrieta). I'm certainly uneasy about Arrieta. Hoping it would be a 4 year deal at the max.

Jake Arrieta is assured a 4 year deal now of at least $80mil in my opinion. Thinking it might take about 4/$90mil

Hoping for a 3 year deal is crazy talk in my opinion. I have no idea why anyone would think that is possible after Darvish got 6.
