Jake Arrieta

DR28
Arrieta can be the difference maker for the Brewers to get to the World Series. The Brewers should just get over their fears amd sign him! It is only money. The legacy of a World Championship lasts forever.

Not directing this at you specifically, but this is a lot easier to say for those of us who aren't signing the check. If I'm the one paying for the richest contract in franchise history, I'm definitely going to be concerned about the return on my investment.

Arrieta definitely increases our odds at a WS, but he far from guarantees it. Say we sign Arrieta for 5/125. How confident is everyone that cumulatively over the next 5 years, Arrieta outproduces Corbin Burnes or even Brandon Woodruff?

The Brew better be damn sure Arrieta or any FA is going to be special if they go to the 5/125 neighborhood. If Cobb will do 4/60 I think that’s a better hope for a ROI. If you think Burnes and/or Woodruff is the goods you may not have to sign anybody. 8th inning still scares me.

I wonder if Stearns would even entertain the idea of starting Burnes in the big leagues at the start of the season. Obviously it was one inning but it was a great inning. I think he would have to be lights out the entire spring in order for him to even consider it.

8th is Hader, 9th is Knebel. It's getting to those Falcons that will be a roller coaster.

Arrieta apparently wants more than Darvish due to his "prestige " lol. So he is out. If Cobb wants a 5th year he is likely also out.

Nelson is incredibly unlikely to be 2017 Nelson in 2018 so that can't be counted on.

Roll with Burnes and Woodruff and make a big trade at the deadline if they are in contention. No one is going to put us into the WS that is on the open market now.

I think Barnes or Albers will have the 8th inning role. I envision them using Hader like they did last year over multiple high leverage innings.

It's not my money and I am concerned big time because I am a Brewer fan. As a fan, I would be afraid that if it doesn't work out, the Brewers are somewhat handcuffed with what they can accomplish because so much of the budget is tied up.

The other problem, it seems to me that you sign a big name, and after a year or two they really aren't worthy of a rotation spot or a lineup spot, but you have put so much money into him, you won't put him in the bullpen or bench as you would if it was another player. Suffering a death by a thousand cuts.

I personally think Brewers are fine with what they have for now. They have a lot of low cost internal pitching options that they need to let battle it out next 2-3 weeks before making any major pitching upgrade decision. In the end I think Brewers rotation to start season will be made up from the current internal group unless a bunch of injuries take place. I Just think they think they have reasonable options and if they all don’t work out they can just call Burnes or peralta up mid season.

I for one, can say that I'm currently not ok with what they have right now, if they're planning on attempting to compete this year. If their plan is to attempt to sign free agents in the future, then that's a different story. That would make less sense to me because the price of pitching is going to be higher than it is currently in years to come. Will I break down because they don't sign somebody? No, I will continue to support them and cheer them on, but would I agree with how they handled the off season if they don't sign a new pitcher? Not necessarily

Arrieta was .1 WAR better than Suter last year. He's regressed, and we'd be paying for past performance. Suter has muscled up and is in line for a big year. Woodruff needs to be in the majors, sink or swim. Sure, they lack depth after those 2, so an injury early would hurt, but a super deep bullpen makes up for some of that.

Quantity isn't the problem. This team is flush with #4-5-types, which Suter and Woodruff are until they prove otherwise. What they could use is another #2/high-end #3, which even with his regression, Arrieta fits into. Is he worth the contract he's looking for at this point in his career? Well, I'm glad that isn't my decision. I just know that having him in the rotation would make this team a solid playoff contender, instead of the fringe contender they are now.

I agree with this assessment. The tough part is just 2 years Lopez was being talked about as flashing as a TOR arm by evaluators as he added bulk velocity and control. A bounce back from him would be HUGE. I think one of the problems that Stearns has with the current FAs is that they would be blocking premium talent and that talent, as it rises through the minors gains value, but as it “sits” in the minors loses value.

I think that’s why we saw the Yelich trade. Brinson and Harrison were going to lose value (mostly brinson) and them taking all the ABs at AAA and AA in CF would continue to freefall the value of Ray and Grisham.

I really trust this front office as they seem to take a smart building vs rebuilding/ckntending approach.

I think it’s time to start putting in your guesses for the contract Arrieta ultimately signs...I’ll go with 4 years $84 million.

I was just thinking I bet he signs for 4 years 80 million, but it could actually be less at this point.
