After seeing that list of players Cole Hamels name popped in my head. He didn't have a great year last year, but was solid the year before. If TX is out of contention and Hamels is doing fine he could be the Verlander type acquisition if we're in need of a starter. Then again, if that's the case he'd probably be a target by all contenders. I don't know on his no-trade as it just says 'limited' but he's only signed this year and next so not a massive risk.

Maybe, the Rangers are a hard to gauge on what they are doing future wise. If Kershaw opts out of his contract which everyone expects him to do the Rangers are going to be going hard after him. Maybe the Rangers trade Hamels to clear some space for next year or maybe they keep him to have him behind Kershaw. The Rangers are an enigma right now as they haven't really put Hamels out there for a trade. I don't think there even has been a rumor about Hamels being available or not this year. Hamels was someone I wanted the Brewers to go after in the deadline last year but I don't think the Rangers made him available.

For what it’s worth, this happened today:

I was in a food line in the Orlando airport today and noticed the older gentleman in front of me had a personalized name tag from an MLB team on his carry-on. I recognized the name (very long-time upper-level exec.) and was able to strike up a conversation. When I told him I’m a big baseball fan and specifically a real Brewers junkie, he said, “It sounds like the Brewers are going to get Arrieta.” I said, “Whoa, that’s cool,” to which he responded, “That’s what I’m hearing.”

The conversation continued in other directions after that, but he was quite a nice & pleasant guy.

Like everything, things can change quickly and/or turn out quite differently, but it’s interesting to know that Arrieta-to-MIL is a perception out there in another team’s ownership circles!

That's a cool interaction. Thanks for sharing!

FYI on Hamel's 2019 option I just noticed. Based on that criteria it's not going to be guaranteed, so I assume it's gonna just be a team option and 6 mil buyout.

2019 Option includes $6 million buyout

2019 option guaranteed if Hamels 1) has 400 IP in 2017-18, including 200 IP in 2018, and 2) is not on the disabled list with a shoulder or elbow injury at the end of the 2018 season

I wouldn't be in love with a 5+ year contract for Jake but honestly I share sentiments with others on the board that I've come around to wanting him the most as a signing. He's got ace pedigree, and I agree that he will pitch with a chip on his shoulder against the Cubs, which is our primary competition in the division. It doesn't hurt that he has experience against the other NL Central teams as well.

I've gone back and forth on just about every pitcher that has been mentioned. Ultimately all of them bring a decent amount of risk whether it be health, declining performance or cost. At this point, I think they end up doing nothing in terms of adding pitching. That may very well be the right move but I just can't square that with the other additions. They spent a lot of prospect equity and cash to make this a borderline WC2 team.

Unless he's willing to take something like 4/$90, I want nothing to do with Arrieta. He's already declining and we are not the type of team that should be paying big for a player's decline years. And the chip on the shoulder stuff is crazy talk and won't amount to anything. Give me Cobb and his remaining potential upside for less dollars.

Well, two other front-loaded Boras deals have come together with a 2-yr opt out.

How do we feel about Arrieta on something like this?

2018 - 30M

2019 - 30M (Player option)

2020 - 15M

2021 - 15M

2022 - 15M

I am trying to figure out what the transaction thread will look like if we actually sign Cobb or Arrieta. We have already spend so much time looking at these guys that will we really have anything new to say? I guess we can have 10 pages of discussion over the actual contract! Honestly I would be shocked if we dont sign Cobb or Arrieta before the end of the month.

I'm a fan of it, but I don't know if Mark can handle those short-term.

To be honest, I skim through most of the posts because it is been hashed out so much now that it is mostly repeated information. I do agree that I think one of these two will be Brewers by the middle of Spring Training.

"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

I wouldn't want to give up a draft pick and risk him opting out after 2 years.

If he opts out, that means he's done well, and thus we'd be able to tender him a qualifying offer. And thus get back an even better draft pick.

I agree with the first half, but I thought I read that a player can only generate a comp pick once?

Can only be offered one QO in their life...so no. We get nothing.

Wasn't our payroll $60 million or so last year, while ranking in the Top Ten in attendance? Just pay Arrieta!

I want Arrieta signed as well. I think a lot of this is our impatience with the process because I have come on here multiple times to post this exact sentiment before deleting it. Typing it out helps!

Are we all forgetting what HH put on Twitter yesterday, that Cobb will be a Brewer?

He guaranteed it.

Didn't he say he would delete his account if Cobb didn't sign. So excited to see what happens!
