If Cobb is a lot cheaper than Arrieta, I'd prefer to sign Cobb. But I'd stay far away from Lynn, his BB rate is a lot higher than Cobb and after the Suppan experience I don't want to sign another high-priced ex-Cards SP.

I'm under the impression that none of the remaining top SP's are going to take a contract less than 4/80. In that case, would you feel better about signing Arrietta at 4/100, or Cobb at 4/80? I think Arrietta is the safer bet at at $5 mil more a year

No Way Cobb gets $20M per year.

Cobb at 4/80 and Arrietta at 4/100 is too expensive.

I wouldn't mind signing Arrietta to a 4 year deal but doubt he will accept it, from what I read he and Boras wants a 5-6 year deal.

I'd go Cobb. Similar numbers as Arrieta last year but in the AL East and without the signs of decline.

I see Cobb signing in the neighborhood of 4 years for $60 million. What do you see as the going price to acquire Cobb?

The only thing I can think while reading this is BARF! These idiots have one title in a century, and suddenly are looking down their noses at everyone else. Ugh!

This almost makes me want the Brewers to sign Arrieta, and have him destroy the Cubs for the next 3 seasons.

I posted this a few days ago but to reiterate...I want the Brewers to sign Arrieta because he just seems like the type of dude who will absolutely be focused to prove his doubters wrong. I would love to get a chip on the shoulder Arrieta in Milwaukee for the next 4-5 years.

I have been having the same thought. He just seems like he is going to want to stick it to the Cubs anyway he can. That kind of intensity would be fun to watch.

Intensity doesn’t always equal results. Considering the contract he’s still going to want, the Brewers should not take that risk.

Agree. If he wants to stick it to the Cubs so badly that he takes a big discount to come to the Brewers, that's a different story. But since that's not happening, I would steer clear of the contract he's demanding.

If four years, 88 million is the best offer for Arrieta, I'd guess that he will be a free agent well into the season. Don't see Boras settling for that. Always a chance that Arrieta overrules Boras and accepts a smaller deal, but Boras will fight him tooth and nail over it.

Hope he does. Each day that passes he loses a day of his fading youth. He has very little leverage at this point.

One side thought I had for Arrieta, it might make sense for him to sit out a couple months and take a 1 year $15-20ish million deal starting in June from a team that loses a starter. Saves him some innings, lets him play for a guaranteed contender, and gives him a chance to reset his market for the 2018-19 class. He'll have the added selling point in 18-19 that he only pitched 130 innings instead of 220 like Kershaw/Keuchel. And more post season success would be hugely beneficial.

No, just no. Arrieta is going to do just fine. Not bad enough to even consider risking a down half season. That would be a disaster. This makes very like sense to me.

Then why not sign already?

Gotta love this. We might as well just fast forward to 2019, the Cubs have already run away with the division.

Is it just me but are the Cubs any better this year than last? I looked at Arrieta and Darvish's numbers and to me they are close to a wash. I wouldn't say Darvish is a large upgrade from last year. They have a good team, no doubt but come on.

Also, I just realized while looking at his Baseball Reference page that the Brewers drafted him in 05.

They may be only marginally better on paper but the general feeling most of last season was they were under-performing going into the AS break, then they caught fire and finished strong. If they avoid that long period of under-performance that alone could make a big difference in their ending win total.
