Who else would offer him? Twins? Who else?

Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports reports that the Dodgers were in the bidding on Yu Darvish right until he decided to sign with the Cubs.

That could mean that the Dodgers will still be in the market for pitching help and will turn to one of the lesser names available on the free agent market.

They would still have to clear salary though if we are being fair. If they couldn't do that for Darvish I'm not sure they can do it for Arietta.

but it's not like every guy suddenly forgot every piece of advice he gave

I am guessing lesser than Arrieta. They don't want to go over the luxury tax and Arrieta won't really be any better than Darvish in that repsect.

After reading this I would pass on Arrietta. He’s not the same pitcher he was in 14 and 15 and his slider usage rate is now below 20%. I’m hoping he signs somewhere else.

There's plenty of data out there to make sure any FO stays away.

One or two year deal fine. Beyond that and you're a team that flat out doesn't get baseball.

New tweet from Tom Haudricourt:

I am aware that this could be posturing, but if Stearns was really on the cusp of something, I doubt he'd throw in the, "I anticipate" line. What is the point of that?

Means that they've put their best offers out there for a FA or trade target and were told it wasn't enough. So they're holding firm unless the other end changes their mind.

Posted this in the FA pitcher thread, but it really belongs here.

1 year, $49.9 million for Arrieta.

- Keeps the Brewers in the wild card picture.

- Gets possibly the last really good year Arrieta has.

- Avoids giving up a pick or signing a terrible (long) contract.

- Gives Arrieta about half of what he would get on a much longer deal; how hard would that be to make up next winter??

- The Brewers stay roughly within their budget before worrying about raises and arbitration and stuff like that next year and beyond.

What do you think?

I don't trust anything any GM says ever but for the sake of argument I agree. It's his way of saying stop coming back for more.

He can't go into the season with his current roster unless Braun is going to be our 2B and Santana will be catching but whatever he says.

Do it. Plus we can give him a QO and get our pick back.

It means nothing. Absolutely nothing.

I don't understand how this avoids us losing a pick. I don't think the 50 million threshold means anything to us. If we sign a player that turned down a qualifying offer we lose a draft pick. In this case it would be a 4th round pick.
