Indians reportedly extend Travis Hafner 4/$57

According to FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal, the Indians and Travis Hafner have agreed to a four-year, $57 million contract extension. Some of the money will be redirected towards his 2007 and 2008 salaries. The deal would lock him up through 2012. It looks like the Indians used the four-year, $52 million extension that David Ortiz signed in April 2006 as a guideline here. Both contracts cover the players' age 32-35 seasons.

Too bad for Hafner and Ortiz that their careers got off to such slow starts. Both have still made plenty of money, but they have basically no shot at the hall of fame despite being top 5 hitters over the last 5 or so years.

Good for both sides. Will this at all affect Prince's future contract? Or will Ryan Howard's next multi-year deal serve more as a template? Given that Hafner & Ortiz are DHs, perhaps they aren't that comparable...
