I recall archer missed a start or two in September last year due to elbow or forearm fatigue....gotta wonder if his name is the next to show up on the TJ list, or at minimum a dl stint. Even posters who didn't want to trade for him have to see that Archer is performing even worse than what they believed he was thus far.

 

In the offseason I was a big advocate of acquiring the version of archer who despite a high hr rate still provided a ton of innings and could at times dominate lineups with his fastball slider combo - the 2018 version of him thus far is not that guy at all. My biggest concern with him was if that arm issue last september was more than needing a few days off - appears to be the case.

I think if you can search through the 46 pages here, I speculated several times about arm issues. Throwing that many innings for that many years at 95+ with a hard slider is a near lock to need Tommy John at some point. There were not serious signs of it (even the September time off may not have been terrible) but you don't want to be caught holding the bag when he needs it if you've given up half of your farm system to acquire him.

His xFIP is 3.78 and his BABIP is .378

 

Having some really bad luck

 

Still getting crushed 24th hardest exit velocity out of 142 pitchers who have had at least 50 batted ball events.

He's a really weird pitcher to try and judge off of the stats because they all seem so contradictory I think he's really a guy you have to scout in person to like or not like.

xFIP now 3.58, BABIP now also trending down at 0.354 after two solid May starts for Mr. Archer...

 

He can't hit, catch, or play 2B so he's far from what the Brewers would likely target at the deadline should they want to improve their roster - but he'll likely be the subject of alot of trade rumors if he stays healthy and there are a few contending teams in need of a good starter. He'd appear to be a fit with teams like the Braves and Phillies to bolster rotation question marks on rosters that are winning now when they may not have been fully expecting to so soon.

What about Odorizzi instead. Twins are falling apart. Odorizzi wouldn't cost much. Cons are how much he struggles giving up home runs and what that might look like in Miller Park

I would still like a TOR SP as I have legitimate concerns about Anderson lining up as the Brewers #1 in a playoff series with the likes of Scherzer, Kershaw, Greinke, de Grom, Syndergaard, Quintana (against the Brewers at least), Carlos Martinez all playing for contenders. While I definitely wanted him over the offseason, I have questions as to:

 

1. Whether or not Archer that guy

2. Tampa's price to trade him

 

I would love him but not at the cost of Burnes or Hiura. I may be willing to sell high on Peralta but I would have to really think about it.

Why? He was great in May, and while his peripherals have skewed downward in recent seasons, he has been a durable #2-3 type starter his whole career, bordering on an ace during his best times. He isn't old, and is on a decently cost controlled contract. Yes, there is downside with any trade candidate, but I see more upside with Archer than I do some of these other guys whose names are out there.

Archer is all about cost. If Tampa keeps asking for the moon, of course we'll say no. But he was really good in May (2.33 ERA), and the club is foolish not to keep tabs on him. Again, no one wants to give up what Tampa was reportedly asking this past off season. But times change and Tampa's asking price may fall drastically if they decide to retool. The team would be wise to keep tabs on Archer, see if they think he can be an upgrade, and then determine what they are willing to pay for him.

This is exactly right .... there's no reason not to want Archer, but there's every reason not to overpay.

 

I'm sure the Brewers are watching him, and I'm sure they know what they're willing to pay - as with several other pitchers, "stay tuned."

I suspect many of Archer's conflicting peripherals are an artifact of pitching in the AL East. I don't have the exact stats, but just eyeballing based on individual teams, the team ERAs in the AL East significantly underperform the team FIPs, while the team ERAs in the NL Central significantly overperform the team FIPs.

Archer seems like the kind of guy that could thrive with a winning culture and some good coaching. When was the last time the Rays really developed a great pitcher? Now, I know we don't have an excellent track record in that regard either, but here and now, this seems like the kind of clubhouse that could really motivate a gamer like Archer to get his act together - and his ceiling is quite high. Look at what Gerrit Cole did when he got out of Pittsburgh and went to the 'Stros. I know with out past it seems out of place to call Milwaukee a place with a "winning culture" but I do believe the system that is in place now is a good one that a motivated player with potential can succeed in.
