2017 Instructional League Roster

Mass Haas

Baseball America has the Instructional Camp roster -- and no, we're not going to get many updates, although Kyle Lobner (@BrewFrostyMug) has indicated he'll be in Arizona for a bit and will be filing reports.

Just-turned 17-year-old RHP Michele Vassalotti is stateside, Carolina 3B Jose Cuas begins a possible conversion to pitcher, just-turned 19-year-old Mexican League signee Victor Castaneda is on board, and amazingly, the Brewers fascination with seven-year pro RHP Braulio Ortiz continues.

Plenty of intriguing players on that list. Develop away, young men!

There are a few updates: http://m.brewers.mlb.com/news/article/256229736/braun-knebel-perez-buy-brewers-fans-tickets/

Brewers farm director Tom Flanagan reported a milestone from the fall instructional league in Phoenix. In a game against White Sox prospects on Monday, Brewers 2017 first-round Draft pick Keston Hiura converted his first putout at second base.

Flanagan also said that two pitching prospects on the injury comeback trail, left-hander Nathan Kirby (Tommy John surgery) and right-hander Phil Bickford (broken throwing hand) were pitching in the instructional league. Only Bickford, however, has faced outside competition.

Instructionals wrapped up on Friday and Saturday this week, and as per this tweet from Chris Kusiolek, 20-year-old Pioneer League All-Star RHP Nelson Hernandez was carted off the field Friday after a ball struck his neck.

Hernandez, a Venezuelan native, began his Brewers career in 2014 at the age of 17, and in his two Dominican Summer League seasons, each and every one of his 33 appearances was as a starter, showing what the organization thought of him. Last year was spent in Maryvale, and he was the Helena Brewers' most impressive starter in 2017, keeping in mind the ultra-offensive environment in Big Sky country.

While it can be said Hernandez gets too much of the plate, he has walked only 42 in 231 innings in his pro career, and it was clear he'd be penciled in to a Timber Rattler rotation spot in 2018 if healthy.

Hopefully we can get an update from the Brewers on Hernandez. We're all aware of the very serious situation facing another 20-year-old Venezuelan farmhand, infielder Julio Mendez, who was transported back to a hospital in his homeland weeks after a pitch struck him in his chest and caused a life-and-death cardiac event. In Mendez' case, the family has asked for respectful privacy.

Milwaukee held an intrasquad game for a collection of significant staff members — including David Stearns and Craig Counsell — that featured many of their minor-league pitchers. RHPs Phil Bickford and Caden Lemons struggled. Bickford, a former Futures Game participant who was acquired from San Francisco in 2016, sat 89-91 with poor command. Lemons sat 86-90 and touched 91 with similar command issues.

Brewers 2017 first-rounder Keston Hiura played second base on Friday, notable because he spent all spring DH-ing at UC Irvine due to an elbow injury. That continued through all but three of Hiura’s final four games at the end of the pro season. I didn’t see his arm stress-tested during this game, but I thought he had the best bat speed on the field.

RHP Adrian Houser made a tune-up start ahead of Fall League play and looks to be in great physical condition. He made nine late-season starts after missing just over a year due to elbow surgery and rehab. He was up to 96 with his fastball and missing bats with a 12-6 curveball.
