Thames has had 114 PA's with runners in scoring position. He's hitting .146 with 2 HR and 16 RBI with RISP. That's dreadful.

 

True. Is that are a large enough sample for us to make a judgement? Honest question.

 

Also, pretty sure they never tagged Domingo and for some reason that wasn't challenged.

 

Although he seems like he agrees with it.

No, it's not a large enough sample. His BABIP with RISP is .204.

 

114 PA's is about a month's worth. Lots of guys have bad months (See Brewers, August circa 2017)

I'm not able to watch, but there has been some debate over the last couple of year that because home plate is not a bag elevated above the ground like the other three and because the catcher can't block the plate anymore (for the most part) that it may be better to run through home than slide. Easier for your leg to elevate and not touch home, and sliding slows you down (which is why they say don't slide at 1st).

Which makes his OPS such an overrated joke of an argument. Who cares that his slugging percentage is so high when his 29 home runs are almost all solo shots?

 

The batter has zero control over how many players are on base when he steps to the plate. Unless there is a reliable clutchiness stat out there I'll take OPS as a pretty good stat.

If Thames was clutch he would hit those extra base hits and homers when men are on base. Instead he's a sub .240 hitter that strikes out alot and when he actually does get those extra base hits to drive up his slugging percentage, nobody's on base.

Rob Deer was actually a pretty good player at least as a batter.

What I meant to say was Thames either homers or strikes out. An all or nothing hitter. Just like Gorman and Deer.

Or walks, which is what Deer also did and what makes them a valuable hitter. Power and OBP is pretty valuable. Thames is hitting .240 but OBP is .340. That's good enough for me. OPS+ is 119. That is a valuable hitter.
