Single season strikeout record

bork

No not that one. Nelson is now 10th on the single season strikeout list with 192. It's looking like he'll become the 6th Brewer to have 200 Ks in a season. With 5 or 6 games left at his current pace would put him at 225-235, good for 3rd place all time.

1. Ben Sheets • 2004 264

2. Teddy Higuera • 1987 240

3. Doug Davis • 2005 208

4. Yovani Gallardo • 2011 207

4. Teddy Higuera • 1986 207

6. Yovani Gallardo • 2009 204

6. Yovani Gallardo • 2012 204

8. Zack Greinke • 2011 201

9. Yovani Gallardo • 2010 200

10. Teddy Higuera • 1988 192

10. Jimmy Nelson • 2017 192

I mean 200 K pitchers don't exactly grow on trees. That have to miss bats at an elite pace, stay incredibly healthy, and be consistent. I am a little surprised we only have that many 200 K seasons, but let's not act like 208 Ks by Doug Davis is terrible. That is a pretty fine season. For a small market it is really hard to find.

I had to look up Caldwell, since he is second in innings pitched for the Brewers. 1604 innings and only 540 Ks. He only broke 100 K's once in his 8 years with the Brewers, and that was when he threw 300 innings. All those 70's workhorses didn't go a lot of innings by striking guys out. Higuera's 87 season is the only one that is both top 10 for innings pitched and K's.

I loved Doug Davis, but it's kind of a sad statement about the history of our starting pitching to see him 3rd on this list.

And Ben Sheets being #1. Who never clammed to be a strike out pitcher.

Sheets was always a pretty big strikeout pitcher and in that 2004 season, he took it to another level. 264 K's is an incredible season. I don't view that as a negative reflection on our franchise. That we've had so few guys get 200 K's, sure, but not that season from Sheets. When he was healthy and right, his fastball command and that 12/6 curve was just about as good as it got for 1-2 pitches in the game.

He should have been in contention for the Cy Young award that year but they went with the prettier W/L record of Clemens won him the award that year.

Yeah, I don't disagree but the thing is that sheets was always talking about he goal was getting the out before the 3rd strike to keep the pitch count down to get deeper in the game. Of course he was pretty good at getting the 3rd strike if it got to the 2nd strike.

I'm just saying it is interesting that he is at #1 because he never tried to be a strike out pitcher even though he did get them when he needed them.
