Good but not great pitching lines all the way from low-A to AAA, with Jungmann really good. Webb with good peripherals - 3 H, 2 BB, 7 K in 6 IP, Brown didn't walk a batter in 6 IP, Wilkerson his usual solid self, and Jungmann the only one to put up a shutout over his 6 innings.

Whalen walks it off as Mudcats finish sweep of Winston-Salem

The victory lifted the Mudcats to a perfect 13-0 finish at home versus the Dash in 2017

By Carolina Mudcats

cut.JPG

Carolina Box Score

The bottom of the order swung the big bats for Carolina on Thursday. Weston Wilson, Wendell Rijo and Caleb Whalen - the 7 through 9 hitters - collected six hits and two HRs between them - providing just enough punch for the Mudcats to claim a 4-3 victory. Whalen would knock in Wilson in the bottom of the 9th to win the game.

On the mound, Zack Brown had a solid game, giving up just one run. Eric Hanhold struck out the side in the 9th to get the win.

Carolina is 69-65 for the season, but only 33-33 in the second half. They cling to a outside chance at winning their division, but would need lots to go right to make it to the postseason.

Pitching Summary:

Zack Brown: 6.0 IP, 8 hits, 2 ER, 0BB, 4k

Brad Kuntz: 2.0 IP, 2 hits, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2k

Eric Handhold: 1.0 IP, 0 hits, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3K, win

Hitting Summary:

It's going to be fun following Lutz in Appleton next year.

This system is the most fun to follow that I've ever followed. Aside from the big name guys, checking out Taylor Williams(Who may be a big name on here, but isn't to most), our young catchers like Henry and hopefully Harrison, through AAA and guys like Jungman who I still think can contribute to the big league team.

There's just so many guys who while they may never make it, at least have the tools to make it and to be successful.

In a way it's almost more fun to follow these guys while their in the minors and there's still the unknown upside to them as opposed to when they get up and you find out they're not all Mike Trout....

Interesting that Wilkerson eclipses Tyler Wagner's Shuckers win record. Wagner goes 11-5, 2.25 in 2015. Wagner and Segura to AZ for Hill, Anderson, and Diaz in January 2016. Hill traded to Boston for Wilkerson and Rijo in July 2016. In a way, it seems to have come full circle. Of course then again, Wilkerson is 28...

Sky Sox face complicated roster question with playoffs on horizon

Brent Briggeman, Colorado Springs Gazette

In yet another why-must-everything-be-so-complicated dilemma in a year full of them for the Colorado Springs Sky Sox, now comes the potential ransacking of the roster just ahead of the playoffs.

On Friday – Sept. 1 – rosters in the Major Leagues expand from 25 to 40 available active spots. This means anyone currently on Milwaukee’s 40-man roster, of which there are eight Sky Sox, can be brought up to bolster the bench without making any corresponding moves.

With the Brewers just 3.5 games out in the NL Central and three games behind the Rockies for the second wild-card spot, it would make sense to pad that bench as much as possible.

Either way, someone is going to get the short end of the stick.

The Sky Sox stand to lose pitchers Aaron Brooks, Junior Guerra, Tyler Jungmann, Wei-Chung Wang, Tyler Webb and Brandon Woodruff. Among position players, infielder Yadiel Rivera and outfielder Brett Phillips are on the 40-man. Lewis Brinson is also on the 40-man, but he is on the disabled list and will not play again this season.

This group comprises some of the key players who have helped the Sky Sox clinch a postseason berth, and taking them away would leave the team short-handed for its first playoff appearance since 1997.

Jungmann is 8-2 with a 2.77 ERA. Woodruff has six victories. Wang has a 2.05 ERA in 47 relief appearances. Phillips is the team’s leader with 217 total bases in a year in which he has a slash line of .305/.377/.567 with 23 doubles, 10 triples, 19 home runs and 78 RBIs in 105 games. Rivera, a shortstop who can play anywhere on the infield, could be a valuable defensive replacement in the sub-heavy National League game.

So, it would behoove the Brewers to grab at least some of these guys as soon as possible.

Also, there’s huge financial ramifications for the players involved. If they spend the final month with the Brewers, their pro-rated portion would be about one-sixth of the $535,000 major league minimum – so about $90,000. Each day Milwaukee would keep them in Triple-A to play out the string with the Sky Sox would cost the players about $3,000.

Many of these players were not high draft picks who signed for huge bonuses, nor are they big league veterans who have made more than most people will see in a lifetime. This would be serious money for them.

So, yet another complicated scenario awaits. Does Milwaukee keep some of these guys behind to help the Sky Sox make a run at a Pacific Coast League title, sacrificing their own bench and taking earnings away from the players in the process? Or do they pillage a Sky Sox roster just as a rare playoff awaits?

Carolina League Standings - Mudcats' Elimination Number is One

but

Carolina League Friday Scoreboard

The two teams ahead of them play each other this weekend, effectively the Mudcats are already squeezed out.

As you'll read when we post below, the Timber Rattlers joined the Shuckers as eliminated teams Thursday.

Helena (10-19 in the second half) have an elimination number of just 4. The Pioneer League season extends beyond Labor Day, unlike the others, and ends next Saturday the 9th.

Great post wonder if Williams will be viewed now as a closer type?

Henry really intrigues me think he could have very good potential as our future catcher

done a nice job getting his avg up but how has he been behind the plate ?

same would go for Harrision.

Lutz is a power bat always intrigued there seems to hit for a good Avg

I to still believe in Jungmann he at least a better option than Garza

Career Night From Friese Highlights Brewers Victory

Gabe Friese tosses longest outing for a Brewers starter this season, picks up third consecutive victory as the Brewers beat the Voyagers 7-2

By Garrett Greene / Helena Brewers

cut.jpg

Helena Box Score

This was Gabe Friese's third straight Helena start pitching 6 or more innings, which is not a common occurrence in a league with such an extreme offensive environment. I've compared Friese to Jon Perrin a few times - back in 2015, Perrin began his career with 46 hits, 7 walks, and 42 Ks over 49 2/3 innings. Friese has begun his career with 44 hits, 4 walks, and 26 Ks over 47 1/3 innings. Pretty eery.

Brandon Presley pitched the remainder of the game after Friese was was really good once again as well. His overall peripherals look odd because of his walk rate, and I am extremely loathe to say "well he's been good except for..." because everything counts, but his 8/16 outing against Orem accounts for nearly *half* of his walk total. If you take out that outing, which you can't, but if you do, he's looking like a really good piece for Wisconsin next year.

Payton Henry lead the offense with 3 hits including 2 more doubles. Kenny Corey and Tristan Lutz had two hits. KJ Harrison walked 3 times and Gabriel Garcia walked twice to go along with a single.

It will be interesting to see how they handle Payton Henry, KJ Harrison, and Mario Feliciano all needing reps behind the dish in A/A+ next year.

Helena Game Log

Nothing really stood out to me - just enjoy a nice win.

Sox Shut Out Express

Jungmann silences Round Rock over six innings

By Robby Veronesi / Colorado Springs Sky Sox

Copied below...

Early offense plus some stout pitching from Taylor Jungmann gave the Colorado Springs Sky Sox a 4-0 shutout of the Round Rock Express in front of 8,741 at the Dell Diamond Thursday night.

Returning to the Austin area after pitching at the University of Texas, Jungmann (9-2, 2.59 ERA) threw his fifth straight six-inning quality start, allowing five hits while striking out five batters. The scoreless start was his fourth this season with the Sky Sox and first since June 30 at Omaha. Tristan Archer, Tyler Webb and Rob Scahill shut down Round Rock over the final three innings to complete the 10th Sky Sox shutout of the season in their final road game of 2017.

Kyle Wren put the Sky Sox (78-55) ahead four pitches into the game by launching his fifth home run of the season off Round Rock RHP David Ledbetter. For the outfielder, the long ball to right-center field was his third leadoff shot in 2017 after starting the game with a home run on June 24 at New Orleans and August 15 at Iowa.

Colorado Springs extended their lead with two runs in the second inning. A walk in between two singles loaded the bases for Ivan De Jesus and the PCL leader in batting average lined a single to center fielder, scoring Kirk Nieuwenhuis and Tyler Heineman to put the visitors up 3-0.

The Sox tacked on another run in the eighth inning off reliever Jimmy Reyes. Nate Orf reached on a double off the top of the wall for his fifth hit in two games and would score one batter later, just beating the throw home from Jared Hoying after Nick Noonan lined an RBI single to the center fielder.

The Sox return to Security Service Field for the final series of the 2017 regular season against the Memphis Redbirds. RHP Bubba Derby (5-0, 3.39 ERA) makes his first appearance against St. Louis' top affiliate when he squares off with RHP Ryan Helsley (0-0. 0.00 ERA).

Colorado Springs Box Score

Let the pre-playoff gamesmanship begin in this Memphis series -- for instance, what does Bubba Derby show Friday night he may not next week in Memphis?
