Sky Sox Clinch First Postseason Berth Since 1997

Colorado Springs wins PCL American Northern Division after OKC loss Sunday

By Robby Veronesi / Colorado Springs Sky Sox

cut.jpg

The Colorado Springs Sky Sox clinched their first postseason berth in 20 years Sunday afternoon, winning the Pacific Coast League American Northern Division for the first time in team history.

Despite their series finale with the New Orleans Baby Cakes being cancelled due to wet grounds at the Shrine on Airline, the Sky Sox still clinched the division after the Omaha Storm Chasers defeated the Oklahoma City Dodgers, 3-0, in game one of Sunday afternoon's doubleheader at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark in the Sooner State.

Colorado Springs will face the Memphis Redbirds (St. Louis Cardinals), champions of the American Southern Division, in a best-of-five series beginning September 6 at 6:05 p.m. MT at AutoZone Park in West Tennessee. The Sox play on the road for the first two games of the series before the two teams head back to Security Service Field for game three on Friday, September 8, with if-necessary games four and five on Saturday, September 9, and Sunday, September 10.

Sky Sox clinch PCL American North title

Colorado Springs making first postseason appearance since 1997

Without throwing a pitch or swinging a bat Sunday, Colorado Springs punched its ticket to return to the playoffs for the first time in 20 years.

After remnants of Hurricane Harvey canceled the Triple-A Brewers affiliate's game in New Orleans and spoiled the chance to clinch the Pacific Coast League American Northern Division title outright, the Sky Sox celebrated on their bus out of town after second-place Oklahoma City lost the first game of its doubleheader with Omaha.

With eight games remaining in the regular season, the organization notched its first division title since 1995 and just the third in franchise history. The Sky Sox were affiliated with the Rockies when they last made the playoffs in 1997.

"It's exciting for everybody, especially some of the younger players who are getting their first opportunity to play in the postseason," Colorado Springs skipper Rick Sweet said. "It's the first step, but it's the hardest one and the longest. Now that it's done, it's time to turn our attention to the smaller, shorter steps."

Led offensively by top Brewers prospect Lewis Brinson and No. 12 Brett Phillips, the Sky Sox stand third in the league in batting average (.290) and runs (783), which enabled them to open up a 9.5-game lead over the Dodgers entering Sunday. Their 77 wins mark the most since the franchise won 78 in 2004 and the sixth time since 2000 they will finish with a winning record.

"We started talking about what we wanted to accomplish in Spring Training," Sweet said. "I told some people last year that [2017] would be a big year for us. When we were putting the club together in spring, we laid out what was needed from our players to do this. We're a young club and our players have grown, matured and stayed focused the entire season. It's very, very gratifying to see all of these guys progress the way they have."

A 27-year Minor League manager, Sweet knows the hardships of leading a team with so many moving parts. But as the Sky Sox prepare to face the Memphis Redbirds in the semifinals, he credited the Milwaukee organization for giving him the young prospects to get the job done with.

"It is a tough job, but our success is a testament to the Brewers," the skipper said. "We've got a lot of good, young players. Even if we lose some, we have others who can capably replace them. I attribute that to what the organization has done the last few years. With some of the guys we've sent up to the Majors, even the ones that have come back do so with a good attitude. That's been a big part of the winning environment in the bigs and here in Triple-A."

Express hopeful home stand will not feel effects of Harvey

Kevin Lyttle, American-Statesman (Austin, TX) Staff

Weather permitting – the forecast looks poor – the Express hope to begin their season-ending home stand Monday night against Colorado Springs.

Despite nearly 10 inches of rain, Dell Diamond is in reasonable shape, according to a club official, with the tarp on the infield since Friday night and no apparent wind damage to the park.

The Express are flying back home from Nashville, Tenn., on Monday morning. Colorado Springs, however, had to change travel plans. The Sky Sox were scheduled to fly here from New Orleans; instead they will fly to Dallas and then take a bus to Round Rock.

Carolina Box Score

Egad, things were ugly for Carolina on Sunday. The Mudcats had a 4-3 lead heading into the 9th, but gave up a run to send things into extra innings. After getting run in top of the 10th, Carolina would cough up a pair of runs to give Myrtle Beach a walk off win.

The game featured nice performances from Marcos Diplan (6.2 IP, 1 ER), Monte Harrison (who had three hits) and a streaking Lucas Erceg (whose batting average has risen to .257 after getting two more hits).

Pitching Summary:

Marcos Diplan: 6.2 IP, 6 hits, 1 ER, 0BB, 6K

Frank Lopez: 0.2 IP, 2 hits, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1K

Brad Kuntz: 1.2 IP, 3 hits, 1 ER, 1BB, 1K, blown save

Luke Barker: 0.0 IP, 2 hits, 1 ER, 2BB, 0K, blown save, lose

Hitting Summary:

Corey Ray: 2-4, 2B, BB

Monte Harrison: 3-5, 2B, SB

Lucas Erceg: 2-4, 2B, BB

Harrison has stolen 16 bases for Carolina but only been caught once. He has an .834 OPS between A- and A+ ball.

Carolina Game Log

The bottom of the 10th was a nightmare for Carolina. Luke Barker came in and gave up two singles and two walks. Add in an error by Barker - and the Mudcats were doomed.

Final: Billings 4, Helena 2

Brewers Drop Sunday Affair In Billings

Brewers bats quieted by Hunter Greene, Tyler Mondile in 4-2 loss at Dehler Park

By Garrett Greene / Helena Brewers

***

Helena Box Score

In a game that will be much more well known as the pro mound debut of 2nd overall pick Hunter Greene, the Brewers mounted somewhat of a late comeback against the Mustangs, but fell short and took their 40th loss of the season in their 63rd game. Chad McClanahan, who has been much better at the plate as the season as worn on, got a double, as did KJ Harrison. Actually power had been the thing surprisingly missing from McClanahan's game as he has tremendous raw power, but has not seen translate to pro ball yet. League ISO is .164, while Chad is currently sitting at .089.

Alex Guenette was the only Brewer with two hits. Kenny Corey was the first batter faced by Hunter Greene, and Corey greeted Greene was a single.

Three members of the Brewers' staff gave up four runs, which isn't bad for a Pioneer League game. But their end-of-game ERAs are less inspiring: 7.22, 7.85, 6.97. Harold Chirino was the starter and allowed a run over three innings of work. His end product this year is not great, but I still like him as a prospect going forward. The young Venezuelan does not turn 20 until January. He throws in the low-mid 90s and has two nice offspeed pitches in a slider and changeup, but control is obviously still a significant issue.

Helena Game Log

After a promising start, a 9th inning rally quickly fizzled:

Helena Top of the 9th

Pitching Change: Connor Ryan replaces Tyler Buffett.

KJ Harrison doubles (10) on a line drive to left fielder Andy Sugilio.

Jay Feliciano singles on a line drive to left fielder Andy Sugilio. KJ Harrison scores.

Offensive Substitution: Pinch-runner Nic Pierre replaces Jay Feliciano.

Chad McClanahan grounds out, pitcher Connor Ryan to first baseman Montrell Marshall. Nic Pierre to 2nd.

Jose Gomez grounds out, second baseman Alejo Lopez to first baseman Montrell Marshall. Nic Pierre to 3rd.

Nick Roscetti called out on strikes.
