Carolina with 19 hits and still in the 6th. Clark and Ray combine for only three though. Harrison on the other hand having quite the night, and Erceg continues to finish the season strong - June OPS .825, July OPS .718 (did hit 5 HRs in July), August OPS .802 with much better walk rate.

There is a very valid reason to rank Harrison ahead of Clark and Ray on end of season lists. Erceg too.

Mudcats total season high 19 hits in 13-8 victory

By Carolina Mudcats

16x9_MonteHarrison_1cp4ttvp_kwwr09j7.jpg

Carolina Box Score

Carolina bats erupted for 19 hits and 13 runs to propel the Mudcats to a 13-8 victory over the Winston-Salem Dash on Thursday night. The big stick of the night went to Monte Harrison, who clubbed his 21st HR of the year, drove in three runs, garnered four hits and stole a base.

On the mound, Kodi Medeiros was hit hard, but he managed to get the win.

The victory for Carolina brought the Mudcats to .500 for the season.

Pitching Summary:

Kodi Medeiros: 5.0 IP, 7 hits, 6 ER, 2BB, 3K, Win

Brad Kuntz: 2.2 IP, 3 hits, 1 ER, 1BB, 3K

Eric Hanhold: 1.1 IP, 0 hits, 0 ER, 0BB, 2K

Hitting Summary:

Corey Ray: 2-6, SB

Monte Harrison: 4-6, HR, 3 RBI, SB

Lucas Erceg: 2-4, 2BB

Cooper Hummel: 2-4, 2B, BB

Luis Aviles: 3-6, 3 RBI

Weston Wilson: 2-6

Wendell Rijo: 2-4

After a tough July, Erceg has rebounded in August, raising his batting average to .253 (to go with 14 HRs). While those aren’t earth-shattering, his hitting league average and his HR total is 10th best in the Carolina League.

Monte Harrison has more than held his own after his mid-season promotion to Carolina. He is now hitting .271 with 10 HR on 192 ABs.

Carolina Game Log

This was my report on Wednesday's Maryvale game --

Final: Arizona Royals 5, Arizona Brewers 3

Maryvale Box Score

A-Crew led 2-0 after four innings, but KC's Sunshine Band scored in each of the next four frames.

Notable because those first four innings were tossed by RHP Phil Bickford, smoking his AZL competition (3 H, 0 BB, 3 K's).

Eventful game for former Red Sox SS Yeison Coca, you'll see as you review the H, R, RBI, BB, SB, and oh no, error columns.

Undrafted catcher Brent Diaz continues to roll, 1.073 OPS in 15 Maryvale games, he had found the going tougher in Helena, but hardly hideous there (.686 OPS).

12th round 17-year-old OF Je'Von Ward continues to hold his head above water -- nice debut campaign, young man. A double here, look for more extra base knocks in subsequent seasons.

Maryvale Game Log

First of all, nobody commented on my "Bickford smoking the competition" line.

But I also failed to point out the stateside debut of 17-year-old OF Pablo Abreu, up from the Dominican Summer League.

Pretty darn impressive to make that jump late in your very first pro season at that age (turns 18 in October). So Abreu, who was the top signing of the 2016 July 2nd class at $800,000, joins his signing classmate SS Jean Carmona in Maryvale. Add previously promoted and highly-touted Cuban first baseman Ernesto Martinez to that duo, and those Maryvale boxes become even more "dream-on-future-talent" heavy.

In Wednesday's game, Abreu grounded out three times. In his 2nd plate appearance, he walked.

One of those groundouts went like this --

AZL Brewers Bottom of the 6th

Brent Diaz walks.

With Je'Von Ward batting, Brent Diaz steals (4) 2nd base.

Je'Von Ward singles on a ground ball to left fielder Andres Martin. Brent Diaz to 3rd.

Pablo Abreu grounds into a triple play, third baseman Angel Medina to second baseman Tyler James to first baseman Brady Cox to catcher Josh Lovelady. Brent Diaz out at home. Je'Von Ward out at 2nd.

Read more about Abreu and Carmona at this 2016 BrewCrewBall article link.

Sky Sox Shut Out Baby Cakes, 1-0

Five pitchers combine for shutout as Colabello records four-hit night

By Robby Veronesi / Colorado Springs Sky Sox

For the second time in 2017, a single run proved to be enough for the Colorado Springs Sky Sox in New Orleans, defeating the Baby Cakes by a 1-0 score in front of 5,557 at the Shrine on Airline Thursday night.

Michael Blazek (3-4, 3.47 ERA) led a stout pitching effort, tossing four innings in relief of Brandon Woodruff to help the Sox achieve their ninth shutout of the season. Tristan Archer, Andrew Barbosa and Rob Scahill (Save # 10, 1.19 ERA) combined to shut down the Baby Cakes over the final 2.1 innings.

The hosts had a chance of breaking the scoreboard with the game's first run in the second inning. Mike Kickham grounded a two-out single to right field, but Nate Orf threw out Cal Towey at home on a strike to Rene Garcia to keep the score tied at zero early on.

The Sky Sox (76-52) broke the deadlock in the sixth inning. Three of the first four batters of the inning reached on singles, capped by Brett Phillips' RBI grounder through the right side of the infield to score Mauricio Dubon. Chris Colabello had a four-hit night from the No. 4 spot in the lineup, his most in a single game since joining the Sky Sox.

Colorado Springs and New Orleans meet up at 7:05 PM Central at the Shrine on Airline as the Sox look to inch closer to clinching a spot in the postseason and shrink their current magic number of four. With a win Friday night, the Sox would even the season series with the Baby Cakes at seven with two matchups remaining in the season.
