Jhoulys Chacin

Chacin could be had for a few flyers (Clint Coulter, Aaron Wilkerson, Taylor Jungman and/or Yadiel Rivera). If Wilkerson or Jungman aren't going to get a shot in the rotation before September, a roster addition may be a wise move. If he replaces Garza maybe "The 5 Million Dollar Man" will go home again, opening up his roster spot?

Rotation: Nelson, Chacin, Anderson, Davies, Woodruff/Jungman/Wilkerson

All for replacing Garza at this point. The five starts at the beginning of the year look like a complete fluke. Since that time he's started 14 games and over that span he has a 5.80 ERA and 1.51 WHIP. Only two of those fourteen starts have been quality starts. All for trading a fringe prospect or two for an upgrade. If not then it's time to just release Garza and give Jungman or Wilkerson a chance. Garza's combined WAR between Fangraphs and Baseball Reference is down to 0.5 so people can forget about that 5 million dollar option actually holding value.

When you adjust Chacin's stats for park factors, he then appears mediocre as always. Pass.

Do we really need another middling starter? I would just as soon give Jungman another shot if we need someone to fill in for a few starts. He's pitched well down in AAA and at least pitched well before up here. But if we have Anderson, Nelson, Davies and Woodruff coming back in a week and a half I'm guessing we're just stuck with Garza and have to hope he can get through those starts without causing too much damage.

If Chacin is mediocre he is better than Garza or Suter.

He's been worse than Garza and Suter away from Petco. 6.90 ERA and a .304/.377/.508 batting line.

Chacin's 2017 WAR per BR is 2.5. Per fangraphs it's 1.8. His 2.5 WAR on BR is better than Jimmy Nelson's 2.0 and Zach Davies' 1.8.

Garza's is 0.2 and 0.8. Suter's is 0.8 and 1.0.

Those take in park factors.

Gah! We already have Chacin in our system with guys like Paolo Espino. Finally the Brewers have the talent in the system where they don't need to go out and overpay for guys like Braden Looper, Jeff Suppan, Kyle Lohse and Matt Garza. I'd prefer not to go back to those times.

Chacin has a 2.1 WAR this year and a 16.7 WAR for his career and has 3 double digit win seasons in his career and just did the Brewers a huge favor by shutting down the Rockies with 6 shutout innings. Nobody said sign him to a long term deal, just rent him for the stretch or see if he'll take a short term bargain deal. Obviously you haven't watched Chacin pitch or you wouldn't be comparing him to Espino.

Since this thread was made Chacin has given up 11 earned runs in 14 innings in 3 road starts bringing his road ERA on the season to 6.93. Once again, he's a completely different pitcher at Petco. He wouldn't help us at all if he had to pitch half the time at Miller Park and in a bunch of other hitters parks.
