Final, Game One: Iowa 2, Colorado Springs 1

Sox Shut Out In Game One, 2-0

Orf extends hitting streak to six games in loss

Brief report on the road loss, pasted below --

Nate Orf extended his hitting streak to six games, but the Iowa Cubs defeated the Colorado Springs Sky Sox in game one of the Tuesday night doubleheader, 2-0, at Des Moines' Principal Park.

Junior Guerra (1-2, 3.15 ERA) tossed another solid start for Colorado Springs (70-48), allowing a pair of runs on four hits while striking out three Iowa batters in four innings. In his four starts for the Sox this season, Guerra has allowed three earned runs or less in each appearance.

Orf recorded the lone hit for the Sky Sox offense, extending his hitting streak to six games. In his last six games -including game one Tuesday - Orf is batting .380 (9-for-24) with six runs and two RBI.

Colorado Springs Game One Box Score

48 pitches, 33 strikes for RHP Junior Guerra, fell victim to the need for a pinch-hitter in a seven-inning game.

Nate Orf's 2017 OBP of .389 tops his career OBP of .385 - a manager's dream. 17 HBP's last year, only his 3rd of 2017 last night.

Final, Game Two: Colorado Springs 6, Iowa 4

Sky Sox Bounce Back In 6-4 Comeback

Phillips, Wren lead seventh-inning rally with two outs to split doubleheader

By Robby Veronesi / Colorado Springs Sky Sox

Kyle Wren drove in four runs and the Colorado Springs Sky Sox scored three runs in their final at-bats to steal a 6-4 win over the Iowa Cubs in game two of the Tuesday night doubleheader in front of 6,909 at Principal Park.

After getting shut out in game one, the Sky Sox (71-48) jumped out in front three pitches into the game. Wren welcomed RHP Scott Carroll to the Iowa Cubs by launching his fourth home run of the season to right field, giving the visitors a quick 1-0 lead.

Colorado Springs extended their lead with a pair of runs in the fourth inning. After Nick Noonan singled and Kirk Nieuwenhuis doubled to lead off the inning, Paolo Espino helped his own cause by laying down his second successful sacrifice bunt of the game to score Noonan. One batter later, Wren grounded a single up the middle with two outs to score Nieuwenhuis and give the Sox leadoff batter his second RBI of the night.

Iowa (58-63) scored four runs to take the lead in the fifth inning, but the Sox fought back with three runs of their own with two outs in the top of the seventh. A walk, a throwing error and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases for Brett Phillips who drew a walk with a full count to drive in Chris Colabello and tie the game. One batter later, Wren grounded an infield single to score Tyler Heineman and Yadiel Rivera to give the visitors a two-run lead.

The Sox and I-Cubs square off in a single game Wednesday morning at 12:08 PM Central. RHP Taylor Jungmann (8-1, 2.86) looks for his team-leading ninth win of the season in his third start against Iowa in 2017.

Colorado Springs Game Two Box Score

Closer Rob Scahill's 2017 AAA WHIP = 1.02; yes, Kyle Wren will be Rule 5 talked-about (again), three hits here.

Colorado Springs Game Two Game Log

Remember, only scheduled for seven innings -- Brett Phillips' walk which drove in the tying run with two outs came on a 3-2 pitch. Yup, one out away from a loss. Nice win!

Col. Springs Top of the 7th

Pitching Change: Jack Leathersich replaces Dillon Maples, batting 9th.

Chris Colabello walks.

Tyler Heineman hits a sacrifice bunt. Throwing error by pitcher Jack Leathersich. Chris Colabello to 2nd. Tyler Heineman to 1st.

Offensive Substitution: Pinch-hitter Ivan De Jesus Jr. replaces Tim Dillard.

Ivan De Jesus Jr. out on a sacrifice bunt, pitcher Jack Leathersich to second baseman Chesny Young. Chris Colabello to 3rd. Tyler Heineman to 2nd.

Kirk Nieuwenhuis lines out to second baseman Chesny Young.

Yadiel Rivera hit by pitch.

Brett Phillips walks. Chris Colabello scores. Tyler Heineman to 3rd. Yadiel Rivera to 2nd.

Kyle Wren singles on a ground ball to second baseman Chesny Young. Tyler Heineman scores. Yadiel Rivera scores. Brett Phillips to 2nd.

With Mauricio Dubon batting, Brett Phillips steals (7) 3rd base. Kyle Wren steals (24) 2nd base.

Final: Down East 1, Carolina 0

Mudcats lose nail-biter 1-0 as Wood Ducks walk-off

The Carolina offense was held to just two hits in the 1-0 loss at Grainger Stadium

Detailed summary, even for such a low-scoring affair, please review Greg Young's write-up.

***

Carolina Box Score

For all the talk about Brevard County's staff from last year, please remember that the Brewers did entrust this young but talented position player squad to a new-to-the-organization hitting coach this year.

RHP Marcos Diplan five walks but in six shutout innings, as you read. RHP Wuilder Rodriguez has been so solid for Carolina, this was his first decision in 26 appearances this year (three with Biloxi).

Carolina Game Log

Does anyone wonder how playing in Lancaster (California League) instead of Carolina would have affected not just the 2017 numbers of the prospect-laden group (we know it would have, obviously - here are the Cal League team stats, note the Jethawks leading the way), but the momentum, confidence and career trajectories of this crew?

Wisconsin Box Score

CF Zach Clark walked twice in addition to the huge slump-busting three-run HR which made it 4-0 in the 4th.

All ten position players who saw action had at least one hit. They drew five walks, and played clean defense. And oh yeah, three pitchers combined on a shutout!

Wisconsin Game Log

Remarkably, apparently Keston Hiura did not touch the baseball in his second base debut.

AZL Giants 4, AZL Brewers 3

AZL Brewers Boxscore

As I mentioned above, the big news here was that Ernesto Martinez Jr. made his surprise stateside debut. He had a perfect day, going 2-2 with a double, and walked twice as well. Unfortunately the rest of the lineup only managed four singles and two walks.

Justin Bullock pitched a career-high 3 innings, allowing a run on 4 hits, and he struck out 5. While Austin Rubick only allowed a run over 2 2/3 innings, it was unfortunately the run that won the game for the Giants.

AZL Brewers Game Log

EMJ starts off with a bang:

AZL Brewers Top of the 2nd

Julian Jarrard walks.

Ernesto Wilson Martinez doubles (1) on a fly ball to right fielder Diego Rincones. Julian Jarrard to 3rd.

Robie Rojas grounds out, second baseman Robert Antunez to first baseman Nathanael Javier. Julian Jarrard scores. Ernesto Wilson Martinez to 3rd.

Je'Von Ward grounds out, second baseman Robert Antunez to first baseman Nathanael Javier. Ernesto Wilson Martinez scores.

Leugim Castillo grounds out, second baseman Robert Antunez to first baseman Nathanael Javier.

DSL Phillies White 2, DSL Brewers 1

AZL Brewers Boxscore

The good news is that Pablo Abreu got three hits, including two doubles. The bad news is that the rest of the team had one hit, a Luis Valdez double. It's tough to score runs when only one guy is getting hits, and the Brewers' DSL main squad falls despite solid pitching from Brayan Salaya and Wilber Perez. Salaya pitched a career-best 7 innings, and limited the damage despite allowing 11 hits. The 17 year-old Salaya has had control issues, but appeared more willing to pitch to contact in Tuesday's game and walked only one batter.

AZL Brewers Game Log

The best chance to get back into it was short-circuited by Ks:

DSL Brewers Top of the 8th

Pitching Change: Carlos Salazar replaces Leonel Aponte.

Luis Valdez doubles (4) on a line drive to center fielder Julio Francisco.

Offensive Substitution: Pinch-runner Anderson Melendez replaces Luis Valdez.

Joel Munoz flies out to right fielder Yerwin Trejo. Anderson Melendez to 3rd.

Luis Manon reaches on a throwing error by third baseman Victor Alfonso. Anderson Melendez scores. Luis Manon to 2nd.

Bryan Connell strikes out swinging, catcher Freddy Barreto to first baseman Carlos Oropeza.

Jean Cruz strikes out swinging.

DSL Cubs1 11, DSL Brewers Co-op 0

AZL Brewers Co-op Boxscore

Brewers' hitters accounted for 4 of the team's 6 hits. But it's tough to win a game with 6 hits and no walks when you give up 11 runs, and the co-op team had another game to forget. Six of the eleven runs were given up by Wilmy De Jesus, though only four were earned.

AZL Brewers Co-op Game Log

Nothing to see here.
