Oh...nobody dislikes "Gumby" more than me. He is the most arrogant, obnoxious person I've ever met. I bumped into him a couple times when I was younger and the guy was just creepy and belligerent. The first time was when I was 20 years old. I went to a bar/restuarant with a GF. I was a fairly big guy and was wrestling in college at the time. Anyway, we had a table, we ordered some food, I walked up to the bar to purchase a couple beverages and he sits down at the table that I was at. He puts his arm around my then GF and and is pulling a Joe Namath...almost. He's kinda pulling at her...and I walk over and try to be polite. I shook his hand, and then kinda forced my way in between the two as she was pulling away. So I didn't push him or force him away. The guy, blood shot eyes and all looks at me slurring, "do you know who the ----I am? I'll..(then suggest he would engage in activities with my GF whenever he wanted).

Bumped into him again about 4-5 years later at the same bar. Not as interesting a story, so I'll cut it short, but he's just as drunk...not certain he was JUST drunk, but don't want to speculate more than that and he's playing pool...and he's just awful. So the place starts to fill up, people have their quarters on the table...he loses and he goes to put more quarters in. Cut to the end, he's arguing with several people, they ask me for my "opinion," though I don't know why...you lose, you lose the table. Basic bar rules. So I said that and he went off on another little tantrum telling me he doesn't care how "bad" I think I am, he could still kick my rear" in not so many words.

Now in between those I did see him 7-8 times and I saw him with Auggie as I knew the family fairly well and he was usually drunk those times, but those were parties or events...like a bar's own little out-door parties.

Bottom line, every time I've seen him he was pretty drunk and twice he wanted to fight me without really any provocation and he's pretty aggressive with much younger girls(though to be clear he never cross a line...just made her uncomfortable).

So yeah, not only do I think the ONLY thing Gantner had going for him was he HAPPENED to play with Molly and Yount and helped form a trio that had more hits than any other trio in MLB history due to the two HOF'ers, not the league average 2nd basemen(at least it used to), I think he's personally an obnoxious drunk.

My experience with Gantner couldn't have been more different. He was first-class in every way.

I'm not here to bury Gantner. I just think the number thing is a silly anomaly.

But it's also ranked about 5 billion on the list of important things. Just brought it up to pass time on create some conversation on a lazy Sunday.

LOL...I am.

No, it's entirely possible I just ran into him on a night where he went waaaay overboard drinking and acted like a fool...it's certainly happened to me. And I'm guessing there are people who have a negative opinion of me based on a few meetings.

He may be a great guy when he's not drinking and he may not drink that much. Those just happen to be the only situations I see him in. And then I contrast that with Auggie who is very conscientious of how he presents himself to people given that he's known in the area and that could color my opinion more than it should. I don't believe it does, but if people knew when they were wrong they'd stop being wrong!

He's only pitched 3 innings in the past 8 days... is it really that horrible giving him the ball today before another off day?

Its a lot of wear for back to back days....

But explain 2 ip for Barnes when Swarzak hasn't pitched this series???

It appears Gantner is a mean drunk?

Ahh....people should take things with a grain of salt. He's lived around here for 50 some years. Like I said, I've done stupid things. And my memory of my calm and cool and respectful demeanor could have been a little skewed...maybe I came off like I was trying to puff out my chest.

I probably shouldn't label him anything after two late night/early morning meetings in bars.

I will say, he did have GREAT taste in women at the time ;)

I would tend to agree with you, but I can certainly see why others would look at this as an oppurtunity to give a guy who's been worked hard this year two days of rest, especially after pitching 2 innings last night.

To me, given the way the Brewers have been going, I wanted to make sure we got the W and go into an off-day with a winning streak(albeit just a 2 game streak).

Wait, so when he answers the question you initially asked about Knebel with a reasonable answer, you come back and complain about something else and then ask HIM to answer why CC didn't throw someone else?

Maybe Swarzak's got a tight hammy, a blister...any little thing...who knows. But Barnes pitched well. They won.

You can always question things, but I think the game and BP was handled reasonably well...

Counsell says Anthony Swarzak was unavailable today due to neck stiffness.

That was my assumption. Something minor, but something that an extra day off could help...

Must have slept wrong or been leaning his head on his hand too long in the bullpen.

HA! Stop trying to get in an arguement and congrats on a random guess at an out of the blue minor issue.

So they're holding up a number for a part-time coach?

I mean, whatever, it isn't the end of the world, but it just seems silly.

Yes. Just like they don't issue numbers that other coaches wear either.

They're full-time coaches. Gantner isn't.

Once again, is there any proof the Brewers aren't giving out the number? Have players requested 17 and been told no?

Brewers went 25 years between issuing #35 to a player (before being issued to Shane Peterson and now Brent Suter). I can't imagine that was because it was worn by the iconic Mike Capel and Narsico Elvira in 1990.

LOL....try to get in an argument? I don't think I disagreed with anyone. I said I could see what both sides were saying and was happy to get the win.

Seems like your overly sensitive of your criticism of CC. I had no strong opinion either way. Pitch Knebel make sure you get the W, don't pitch him because he's been overworked and he threw 2 innings yesterday.

I didn't disagree with any point of view, was just happy to see them win and made an educated guess as to why he wouldn't pitch Swarzak....so...I'm sorry? It was a grievous mistake and I will try to be better in the future!

Yes, Hader, who had to take 71 instead.

Ah, good call. It looks like he took #71 as a NRI back in Spring Training 2015. Wonder if Gantner was helping out that year?

Rock has also talked about it multiple times this season that they don't issue 17.

Why would we need to pitch our 2nd best reliever in a 3 run game if we don't need to? Let the man rest, we're going to need him bigly vs COL, SF, LAD coming up.

These minor issues happen dozens of times every season. I wouldn't call this a random guess, it is what usually happens when bullpen usage looks different than normal.
