draft musings

It seems that this year we pick #2 and know less than years when we pick #11 (Krynzel), #12 (Jones), #7 (Fielder). Fielder was a bit of a suprise but his name was out there, Jones and Krynzel were somewhat anti climatic.

Handicapping the three:

Sleeth: he seems to compare favorably with Kris Benson when he came out. Good makeup, excellent but not elite stuff, with a low-mid 90's fastball and good but developing breaking stuff. Tough minded kid who will work hard. Nothing I've seen about him is overwhelming and doesn't seem to possess the ceiling that a Mike Jones does, but none the less would be a great addition to any system.

Delmon Young: seems like a four tool player with great power and hitting skills, strong arm, and good defensive skills. Doesn't sound like a burner, but runs well enough. A Cliff Floyd type player? Negatives seem to be age, and overall athleticism.

Rickie Weeks: a five tool player. ALl indications are like the aforementioned athletes that this is a quality ball player and person as well. Hard worker who is now approaching 200 lbs at 6 ft tall which means he could possibly project to upwards of 5 positions (SS, 2B, CF, LF, RF) whether he hits like a corner of or has the defense to stick in the middle infield seems to be the biggest ?. Great speed, great hitting skills, and improving yet impressive power. Seems to compare to an Alfonso Soriano type player, Corey Patterson might be another comparison. I don't know if he has Soriano's power, although I think Soriano gets more pitches to hit than any player in MLB given that lineup. Who would you rather pitch to Soriano or Giambi? I'll take my chances with Soriano, GIambi has done it for too long. Being sandwiched between the Jeter's, Giambi's, Williams, etc...has really helped him. Put him on the Crew and Soriano hits .285 with 25-30 jacks and steals 35 bases. I think Weeks could project to .300-.330 with 15-20 jacks and 40 steals. (based on reports, I've obviously never seen him.

So who do you take?

Benson (healthy?), Floyd? Soriano?

Interesting call...I don't see how you can lose.

Can't wait until Tuesday!

I'm not sure it's really a complicated decision. Sleeth is not in the concencus top group. Weeks and Young are considered by almost everyone in the know as the concensus top 2 players, with the rest dropping in to the next grouping of players. The Brewers pick second. They should (and I expect them) to pick Weeks or Young depending on whom the Devil Rays take at #1. The one wild card IMO is whether the Devil Rays go for Harvey as a budget pick then we need to decide whether to take Young or Weeks.

I have come to the conclusion that if weeks is there at #2 he has to be picked. His college numbers are so astronomically ridiculous that he might be an absolute monster some day.

Check these numbers out.

AB-535

HR-49

SLG-.935

RBI-228

R-248

AVG-.469

SB-58

If you got these numbers on your video game you would sell it because it was unrealistic. These are some sick numbers.

It will be great fun tracking Rickie through the Brewers system. Opening day 2005 Weeks name will be up on the Miller Park scoreboard.

I'd go Weeks. I tie Young and Weeks together, so they'll go 1-2, but its a lot easier to get a good OF via FA than get a good hitting 2B with speed via FA. triple play??

Can't wait for this lineup opening day 2005 or '06

1. Krynzel CF

2. Hardy SS

3. Jenkins LF

4. Hart 3B

5. Fielder 1B

6. Weeks 2B

7. Johnson C

8. Who cares!! those 7 would be great

9. Jones SP

I like this lineup instead:

1. Krynzel CF

2. Weeks 2B

3. Fielder 1B

4. Sexson LF

5. Hart 3B

6. Nelson RF?

7. Johnson C

8. Hardy SS

Rotation:

Jones

Sheets

Parra

Hendrickson

Wilhemsen

(or a decent young starter for Jenkins)

CL

Diggins

Go Brewers!
