Brewers Trade for Neil Walker

I'll take Walker over Kinsler and Phillips in a heartbeat...based on what it costs us that is.

Adam, people whine on this site on the daily always looking forthe negative. People scream for Kinsler/Phillips (a 2b in general too) and when that happens half the comments are negative for a player that's solid and better than what people were screaming for

You are right.... they are making a needed move that I have been calling for, and that should be mentioned. Good move.

Yet, why the wait? I guess the big thing with me is that they have played so poorly, hit so poorly, and everyone has their fake smile on about how we are right in it. Just get Villar away (trade him for something if he has this load of future star talent) and beat bad teams at home. Not a lot to ask.... the people predicting flop after the break didn't even think they would be this bad. So frustrating and people are venting.

This isn't a video game. This stuff doesn't happen instantly. It takes time for guys to clear waivers and teams to negotiate and do physicals and all that jazz. Maybe the Mets gm wasn't in a huge hurry or wanted to test the market a bit before completing a trade.

I'm glad we made the move, contingent on the cost of course. Neil walker will help down the stretch. Might not be enough but I'm glad to see these little moves to try improve.

I like the move. They're only 3 games back, but this is a surprise team and it probably wouldn't have been wise to go after any big fish that would have cost significant prospects. If they can fill some holes like this without giving up any of the big future pieces, it gives them a chance to see where it can go this year while still retaining the guys that could be important for a more talented future team. Wouldn't mind seeing Granderson come on over as well, perhaps these talks also prepped some talks on that front as well.

I don't really see the whole "Villar is turning the corner" point with the timing, he's literally had two good games in a row... he was 1 for 19 in a 10 games stretch before that... I wonder if bringing Walker on board won't have a couple extra benefits in regards to Villar though. 1.) He'll have a veteran 2B to learn from the rest of the year and 2.) He'll have a fire lit under him for next year and know that he's got to produce if he's going to play when it's crunch time. It's hard to tell with Villar though as so many of his problems seem to be mental and it takes different guys different things to get their heads screwed on straight.

It's going to be a top 30 prospect if the Mets are picking up some salary.

Not likely. This is a salary dump and even with nothing coming back the Mets had to eat salary just to get rid of the player. Walker basically has negative value right now compared to his contract.

We will see. For what's it's worth Twitter is throwing out some interesting names.

Stearns is looking to cut Ks and add OBP. We are on the wrong side of both stats. Villar broxton arent producing enough to overcome the Ks and low obp they bring to the team.

Astros brought in beltran mccann and aoki for a reason. Walker has a lower K rate. Granderson Kinsler all our targets have a few similar traits. We need to lessen the empty outs at cf and 2nd. Walker helps that. They shouldkeep him and sogard... interesting time for villar here.

I wonder if the PTBNL is tied to how the Brewers finish (like the CC deal in 2008).

In that deal, if Brewers made the playoffs, the PTBNL would be Michael Brantley.

If the Brewers missed the playoffs, the story is the PTBNL would have be Gamel (if my memory serves)...

I think Villar will get DFA'd and they'll have 10 days to work out a trade. But if they couldn't trade a reliable, controllable reasonably priced Gennett this spring, I don't think the market will be strong for Villar, especially since he's out of options. Maybe they can assign him if there are no teams out there willing to give him a 6 week trial. There's no way they were going to go into 2018 with Villar penciled in as starter at 2B. His lack of options means he moves on. That's the risk you take with trading for out of options players who aren't established.

Who starts at 2B next year? They'll have internal options, and some in FA.

Why would they DFA him? Who plays 2b next year? It's not like we won't have the payroll flexibility for his first arby year, even as depth of he doesn't return to form.

I think it was Taylor Green, not Gamel. Big Walker fan, guess it depends on the return.

Could well be. That part of the deal wasn't widely known, just that it came down to the Brewers making the playoffs or not.

I can tell you fans were roasting Mark Shapiro in Cleveland for the rest of that season & beyond (until Brantley started to produce while the other 3 acquired by Cleveland in the deal fell by the wayside)...

I'd be shocked if the Brewers DFA Villar.

The obvious move is sending Sogard down until September 1. Tonight aside, Sogard has been absolutely awful since he came back.

There's plenty of bullpen guys that could go too. We have too many guys out there as it is. I wouldn't miss Drake or Torres

Because they can't go into 2018 with him as the nominal starter after the season he had in 2017. He has next to no value as a utility player. Heck he can't play one position well, much less multiple positions. They'd love to be simply able to option him but he's out of options.

There's 2 options right in front of them in FA in Walker and Sogard and multiple veterans out there. Kinsler will be a FA. Phillips is a FA. Kendrick is a FA. Forsythe is another though he's got a team option. Same goes with Jed Lowrie. Maybe Brett Lawrie tries a come back. Perez is an option. Dubon is an option. DeJesus is an option.

I haven't seen any guesses, my WAG... Medeiros, Stokes or a Jungmann

The names I've seen on twitter, for what it's worth, is Gatewood, Peralta, Nottingham.

It's going to be a real prospect. Not top 10 of course, but not out of the top 30. It really depends on how much cash is coming back.

I would think those names are pure speculation. Those names seem like a pretty steep price , especially Peralta.
