2018 Starting Rotation

pacopete4

Davies taking the ball Monday against the Cubs, per Roziak:

Gutsy move, but at least we'll have pen reinforcements available. Davies has been very good career-wise vs. the Cubs.

That leaves Guerra lined up to face the Nationals on Sunday. I can't imagine that his hold on that spot is safe, though. In the back of my mind, I think the pitcher making that start for the team may not be in the organization right now. Or it will be Adrian Houser.

Woodruff has to get Guerra's spot in the rotation, right? At least for one start I would hope.

Miley, Davies, Anderson, Chacin and Gonzalez is my guess.

They didn't get Gonzalez to pitch out of the pen. I'm guessing they'll start him. Counsel will say stuff about 'veteran' and 'been there' - then allude to not wanting to put a young player in a difficult spot (which I hate).

That's my guess.

Mine too. Woody will get some more BP action though.

I agree. Gio will take Guerra’s spot. I have been a believer in Woodruff all year. Obviously Brewers brass no a lot more than I, but man I think he can be good as a starter.

I'm really looking forward to Gonzalez's start. Hope I don't live to rue those words. The talent is clearly there, & I choose to be encouraged that they're taking extra time for DJ to work with him before turning him loose in the rotation.

I know he's struggled this season, but just last year he finished top 5 in NL ERA. This year he had a great first two months, an awful June, so-so July, and August wasn't pretty -- but two of his Aug. starts were quite good (7 IP & 1 R, v ATL & @ NYM).

I hope DJ can get him back on track. His upside is higher than anyone currently in our rotation, & what a shot in the arm it'd be to add a #1 for the home stretch & playoffs.

Seeing what Cole Hamels has done in Chicago gives me hope that Gio can be an asset. The Cubs have lucked themselves into enough TOR starters. It's the Brewers' turn.

That looks like Miley, Chacin, & Chase vs Cubs (Quintana, Hendricks, Lester) next week in Chicago.

Chase at Wrigley doesn't sound like fun.

I remember him pitching stellar the game I went to there and has been great the other two games against the Cubs this year.

It might not be an apples to apples comparison, but I'm also comforted by knebels turnaround so far. Goo got some time to clear his head and hopefully work on some things. If it works out the same as unable has looked so far, look out for the brewers.

Remember what Yoda said:

Here is how it lines up:

Cubs--Miley, Chacin Anderson,

off day

Pirates--Gio, Davies, Miley

Reds--Chacin, Anderson, Gio

off day

Pirates--Davies, Miley, Chacin

Cards--Anderson, Gio, Davies

off day

Tigers--Miley, Chacin, Anderson

If they stay this way (not skipping a start), the Tuesday WC game would be tough for either Miley or Chacin. Do you skip either Davies or Gio in this Pirates series? It could look like this:

Cubs--Miley, Chacin Anderson,

off day

Pirates--Gio, Miley, Chacin

Reds--Anderson, Davies, Gio

off day

Pirates--Miley, Chacin, Anderson

Cards--Davies, Gio, Miley

off day

Tigers--Chacin, Anderson, Davies/Gio

I think the management has to be looking at this. Of course, rain in Chi/Pitt/StL could play havoc, but I think you have to plan it out this way.

If they want Chacin available to start the WC game instead, it appears that he or Miley would have to get skipped to do so.

Sept 11 is his next start. On normal rest, his next start would be the Sunday the 16th (skipping one of Gio/Davies). Then the 21st is a Thursday off day, so they

have a choice of Miley or Chacin to pitch on the 22nd (Fri) and 27th (Wed). That choice would miss the final Det series and be lined up for the Tuesday WC game.

Since the Cards are the most likely opponent and they are severely right-hand oriented, think you would want Chacin, no?

Simply because they pitched Gio ahead of Davies in this past series, unless they do something strange (bullpen day or throw someone else not among the 5), Gio is a virtual lock to pitch 3 games. Miley/Chacin/Anderson will pitch 4 apiece. Then it is a choice whether Gio gets a 4th game or Davies gets a 3rd.

50/50 chance it is good. That is the nature of the ballpark. Just hope the wind is blowing in.

Granderson feels like this year's Jerry Hairston. What a huge boost he has been. Stearns is batting a really high average on his mid season pick ups this year. Not perfect but pretty darn good and we didn't need to give up any of our stud minor leaguers to do it.

This! While the system depth did take a hit with all the deals, I wouldn't qualify any of the players given up as future cornerstone types. They also managed to weed out several guys in need of Rule 5 40-man protection, so that's a win-win as well.

Just taking a look at the talented starting pitching staff Biloxi has this year makes me think that not only the immediate future is bright, but the long-range forecast is calling for sunny skies as well :)

Please. Please. PLEASE remember this anytime we want to complain about not trading for an "ace". We have our stud farm rearing and ready to join as soon as next season all while making a playoff run this season.

I think Stearns has been diligent in turning over every rock in a quest to acquire an ace-type pitcher, but it just hasn't happened as of yet. It wouldn't surprise me in the least to see a big move this offseason for one of those types, though. He knows now that this team's base is elite, and a top-end rotation may be all that's standing in the way of being the top team in the NL for the next several years. Granted those types obviously are difficult to acquire, but if a guy like deGrom, Syndergaard, Bumgarner, or even Wheeler became available, I would hope and expect Stearns to be heavily involved in those conversations. That said, even if a pitcher is not acquired, the Brewers stand to have tremendous talented starting pitching depth going into the 2019 season, especially if Nelson makes a full recovery.

Of all the pitchers in baseball, the one I think is least unlikely to emerge as "the one true ace" for the Brewers in the next few years is Corbin Burnes, after seeing him pitch this year. He seems like he has stuff as good or better than Jimmy Nelson, while having control of it already.

According to the probable pitchers, the Crew is skipping Miley and pitching Chacin on Sunday.

Pirates--Gio, Davies, Chacin

Reds--Miley, Anderson, Gio

off day

Pirates--Chacin, Miley, Davies

Cards--Anderson, Gio, Chacin

off day

Tigers--Miley, ???, ???

That would give Chacin 5 days off if he starts the Tuesday WC.
