Peralta pitching tonight on just 3 days rest. Guessing it will be a short outing, then the 19th will be his regular turn.

Only went 3 IP. Probably a good bet he's coming up.

the brewers have acknowledged that they intended peralta to pitch only three innings last night.

It'll be interesting to see what the Brewers do with pitching in September, when rosters expand. Some guys will likely still be used more like traditional starters, but even just on the 40-man there's an abundance of pitchers who might not all be perfectly suited for regularly going 6-7 innings (though some of them are), but who can go 2-3 innings, go through the lineup at least once; Anderson, Chacin, Nelson (hopefully!), Davies, Woodruff, Suter, Guerra, Miley (Possibly...), Houser, Peralta, Wilkerson. Williams, Hader, Jeffress can go 2 high-leverage innings if need be. Knebel, Jennings, Barnes, Logan (ugh) are more of traditional 1-inning types or specialists. I even left out Lopez and Asher, who I'm not quite sure where they fit. There are even a bunch of guys off the current 40-man who could contribute to the multi-inning roles, primarily Ortiz, Burnes and Derby.

Anyway, with the possibility of a 15-20 man pitching staff filled with guys who can go multiple innings to various degrees, there are lots of interesting things you can do. Perhaps you have three starters who reliably go deep and pitch well; let's say Anderson, Nelson, Chacin. Your "#4 starter" could be Woodruff, Suter and Peralta going through the order once each. Your #5 could be Houser, Guerra and Davies doing the same. That still leaves Miley and Wilkerson as long relief, and keeping the current 8-man bullpen available to use as they're currently used.

That was just one example of how you could set it up. Injuries and form will necessitate some changes etc. But it's an illustration of where depth will truly be of benefit.

It's kind of amazing how the starters (by FIP) have performed in almost exactly the opposite order of what most people probably would have expected, and in reverse order of their perceived chances of making the rotation.

Peralta

Miley (not that it means anything in 6 innings but hey, he pitched well)

Chacin (he would be slightly lower by reverse order of expectations but hasn't been that much better than Suter or Guerra, and Suter's batting value moves him up)

Guerra

Woodruff

Suter

Davies

Anderson

Anderson and Davies? Worst on the team. Suter was considered a borderline starter at best but has been one of the most valuable if you consider his bat and glove.

Davies and Miley both going out to minors for rehab assignments. Miley can't be reinstated until July 9th, but will be interesting how or if they will adjust roles. Could Suter go back to pen? Can Miley turn into a loogy? Could they go with a 6 man rotation?

Miley might just get released. He needs to do well in His rehab assignments to get a shot in the starting rotation.... sounds funny to say, but we have several young candidates to fill the rotation now, and all of them might be ahead of Miley.

6 man rotation is out, they've basically been going with 4 1/2 man rotation. I think they really slow walk Davies, nothing to consider for a while.

Will Miley replace Suter? At this point, no. My guess is Miley gets added to the pen and they DFA Logan, who will end up in CS. Not a big market out there for pitchers who can't get anyone out. Miley could always be stretched out again as a starter if Suter stumbles.

I also don't see Peralta up for the rest of the year, it would just be too many innings. Hoping they send him back down and skip a few starts so he can be used in September/ October.

  • 1 month later...

if the brewers want to limit freddy peralta's innings, the two off days this week could afford them to move him to the bullpen and reinsert him into the rotation 21 august.

forecasted august starts and days of rest in between starts:

12: chase anderson (4)

14: joulys chacin (5)

15: junior guerra (5)

17: wade miley (5)

18: anderson (5)

19: chacin (4)

20: guerra (4)

21: freddy peralta (10 days since last start, hypothetically)

22: miley (4)

24: anderson (5)

25: chacin (5)

26: guerra (5)

28: miley (4)

29: peralta (7; could switch peralta to the 28th to give miley a fifth day of rest)

Well since they did not option him after his last start it was clear they were not going to skip the start. It is odd though. This would have been a good chance to give him a rest and keep his innings down.

peralta would've been required to stay down for at least 10 days if optioned. the club couldn't afford to have him away for that long, because they likely would have needed him to start on the 9th day after.

They could have optioned him after his last start (August 11th) and then recalled him for August 21st. With the off days on the 13th and 16th, they did not need a 5th starter until the 21st. Its not like he pitched well in his last start that they could not live without him.

Even though the Brewers say Peralta has no innings ceiling, I wonder if they might pare back his innings by employing some kind of Tampa Rays model where he starts, goes three innings, then someone like Burnes comes in for three innings. It's worked pretty well for the Rays this year.

It's kind of an interesting approach for teams that lack starting rotation depth. Of course one could say the Brewers pen is not best suited to this sort of thing but I thought it'd be a fun topic to discuss.

Is there any chance that Guerra is optioned out to get another pen arm up for the rest of this week?

I believe they could (I don't see why they wouldn't). I'm not sure if it would burn his final option or not -- I don't think he spent the requisite 20 days in the minors this season yet to burn an option (do those 20 days have to be consecutive?)

I believe if they option Guerra he would be 1 day short of 20. The Brewers season began March 29th and he was recalled April 11th so 13 days optioned thus far. Send him to Wisconsin where they have no shot at the playoffs and recall him September 4th. Could still then be starting depth in 2019.

Hopefully, they do option Guerra.

The thing is... the Brewers are playing well with three major 2017 rotation contributors (Nelson, Davies, and Suter) missing substantial time this year. If Nelson, Davies, and Suter weren't hurt, we're talking a whole different situation.

No shot at the playoffs for Wisconsin? Check again.

Can still call Guerra up after September 1.

an optioned player must spend at least 10 days optioned, or until his team is done playing for the year--whichever comes first. if guerra was optioned to the timber rattlers, their season could potentially be extended beyond 3 september.

the mud cats have been eliminated. their season definitely ends 3 september.
