2018 Starting Rotation

pacopete4
The last 7-10 days have turned this rotation into anything but consistent, late scratches (Anderson), DL stints (Davies/Miley), early in-game exits via injury (Miley), inconsistency (Guerra), and continued struggles with being yo-yo-ed around at the MLB level (Woodruff) have tested the 40 man roster depth on the pitching front. The big positive is overall, they've held things together pretty well, and there are options to keep it up for awhile.

I do feel like Davies' shoulder is more than a minor blip, and he's going to miss a few more weeks if we are lucky. Does anyone know whether they did an MRI on it or are they just crossing their fingers it's nothing more than inflammation bugging him? Peralta should probably stay up and in the rotation until Davies returns. I'd say Burnes would be ready to take Guerra or Suter's spot should they scuffle, but that would require adding Burnes to the 40-man and dropping someone from it at a time when they don't have alot of flexibility there...although Sogard's AAA performance to date (and MLB performance previously) should make him completely expendable - particularly with Saladino around as a better option than Sogard even when Sogard is hitting over his presumed weight (~150).

Regarding Sogard, it would be a terrible idea to cut him loose. I get he's not playing well, but it's also been 4 games in AAA. With Dubon down for the season, our SS depth is taxed a bit. There are other options we can cut loose if needed, Sogard isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

As far as SP stability, we've had anything but stability in the rotation. Fortunately we have a lot of depth we can call on to cover starts. Hopefully Peralta hangs around for a few starts until some other guys get healthy. And if he pitches like he has this first start, it's going to be hard to send him down when Chase/Davies/Nelson get healthy. I would like to think this one good start has earned him another start over either Suter or Woodruff if it comes down to those choices.

aaron wilkerson made his first appearance of the 2018 season yesterday and threw 5.2 innings of two-run ball with six strikeouts and no walks. one would assume that the brewers would not be counting on marcos diplan to make the jump from high-a ball to the bigs for an emergency start. and all four appearances for the recently optioned alec asher have been starts with the sky sox.

things could be looking a lot bleaker were wilkerson still on the disabled list.

Peralta was already the 8th pitcher to start a game this season.

Who will be the 9th?

Sogard... he’s mastered the bat missing ball thing so we might as well finally take advantage of it...

I could see him coming up with a secret "hair tonic"

Losing Sogard if they need a 40 man spot is hardly a disaster. Saladino is a fine defensive shortstop who wasn't bad with the bat in Chicago in 2016. Orf's started 9 games there this year without an error. Perez can play there too.

nick franklin will come off the 40-man before eric sogard does.

Over Chacin's last six starts he's 5 - 1 with an ERA of 2.62 and a batting average against of .185 He's probably getting a tad lucky with a BABIP of .212 over that span but some of that might be due to weak contact - I didn't check that far into it.

I'll take his overall numbers for a #4 any day.

Who gets sent down as Anderson (Monday) and Davies (Wednesday) return from the DL? The starts should fall something like this...

S Guerra

M Anderson

T Chacin

W Woodruff/Suter

T Davies

then Rinse and Repeat

Anderson jumps in and gives an extra days rest to Chancin and Woodruff. If Suter starts he will be on five days rest. My guess is Woodruff gets the Wednesday start with Freddy going down for Anderson then Lopez (trying to use him in low leverage situations two times during the week) goes down for Davies.

I look at it this way. Suter's made 8 starts and has gone at least 5 innings in all of them. Woodruff's made 3 starts and only made it to 5 innings once and that was against a struggling Diamondback team. Suter has the 5th spot until Miley reclaims it. Peralta going down will open up the spot for Anderson. Suter will start Wednesday on regular rest. The only question is do you keep Lopez around and allow Woodruff to stay stretched out by starting in AAA or do you move Woodruff to the pen. I think Woodruff goes back to CS.

I really like Suter, but would rather see Woodruff get big league starts to see if he can be consistent.

we now know it's this:

today: suter

thursday: davies (someone will have be removed from the roster; lopez and woodruff are candidates)

friday: guerra

saturday: anderson

sunday: chacin

the brewers don't have an off day until 31 may, which will likely mean 13 consecutive days of playing. but then they're off twice the first full week of june (4 & 7 june).

They are pitching quite well and keeping us in games and the offense is starting to look more complete. I am glad Woodruff got 2 innings before they sent him down. We are in such a good place barring multiple long term injuries. Knock on wood.

  • 3 weeks later...

a fifth starter will be needed 19 june. we know that zach davies won't be activated by then. brandon woodruff will not have met the requisite 10 days down.

barring a trade, it's likely we'll see freddy peralta recalled to make at least two starts in the rotation on 19 june in pittsburgh and on 24 june vs. st. louis.

Peralta is the most obvious choice, but who knows they have seen him already, may want him to continue working on his command, etc. Wilkerson, Houser, and Burnes are all options.

Wow, not bad at all for your #7- 11 SP. I've come to believe having SP depth like this is more important than the "Ace" or "TOR" starter we talk about all the time.

Wilkerson, Houser, and Burnes are all options.

working against burnes is a full 40-man and not being on said roster. as mentioned elsewhere, alec asher is also being stretched out as a starter, so there are plenty of starting candidates with mlb experience.

Yup, I agree. That's why I listed Burnes last, as I really doubt they would add him to the 40 for a couple starts. If they really wanted to see him pitch a game, they could, that would be the only reason- and not a very good one given they have other options.

Peralta pitching tonight on just 3 days rest. Guessing it will be a short outing, then the 19th will be his regular turn.

Only went 3 IP. Probably a good bet he's coming up.

Can't be argued that he's most deserving. I hope he can stick and end the shuttle back and forth for now.
