Forum Tone

I've been a "member" of BF.net since 2001 or 2002. I was largely absent from posting and viewing from 2012 through to a couple of months ago. It is just my impression that the tone utilized between users today is much more snarky and argumentative than it was in the past. Rather than discussions, it seems as if everything is a constant argument and there are many more instances of "personal attacks" that are veiled to not cross the forum rules.

Is this just my perception. Is this just sports discussions today that everything must have a "one up the other" mentality. It just feels more like "Around the Horn" or "Pardon the Interruption" like rather than a group of fans discussing a common interest. I'm not sure there is anything that can be done about it. I just wondered if it was me getting older and not understanding the passionate generation of fans behind me? Or maybe my perceptions are just off? It just doesn't feel like the BF.net I grew up with.

No, you are right. The tone of the board has shifted quite dramatically over the last couple years. There is a lot more use of acronyms instead of actually typing things out as well.

Fan is short for fanatic.

I blame Wang.

The recent trend of locking threads rather than dealing with the rules abusers is concerning.

In addition to other things, I get this posted towards me...

I can't believe your Uncle let you out of the basement to type this nonsense.

...in response to showing statistically how fielding percentage shows very little correlation in a team's ability to prevent runs from scoring. I called no one any names, and didn't respond negatively to the attacks made against me.

And rather than admonish the abusers, the moderator instead locks the discussion. Not really fair to the 2 people who raised the notion that fielding percentage was an insignificant measure. Turns out they were shown to be correct and not even allowed to further discuss.

I think we know why the tone here is going south.

We don't always publicly admonish abusive posts. Sometimes we do, sometimes not. Sometimes we just give out a temp ban to the offender. You sent several mods a private message and we were happy to handle your complaints privately. But now that you've gone public we will respond - you bring some of this on yourself. Don't go posting about your insider info and then get thin skinned when someone calls you out or gets annoyed with you acting like you know more than everyone. You have a solid history of inflaming tensions in various threads. To wit:

"I guess its teaching time."

I'm truly in awe that you think this would not provoke anyone. Stop doing that sort of thing and start treating others as you want to be treated.

Having said all that, there is never a reason for people to get personal and call names and as such that person is getting banned for a little while. As for the thread, once it goes off the rails (and really that started to happen after your quote above) and there are too many posts that are off topic, snarky, or otherwise not helpful we lock it.

"Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power......He probably has a future as a backup infielder if he can stop rolling over to third base and shortstop." Keith Law, 2006

Thanks for the reply homer. I don't regret going public about this. It's good to have clarification on the difference between shutting down topics versus dealing with offenders. I received that from you and another helpful moderator via PM. I have a lot of knowledge to share here but I don't post often. When I see something being discussed where that knowledge can shed light or correct a falsehood, I'd hope I'd be able to do so without those who the info contradicts taking such offense. I'll continue to improve my delivery. I've already stopped quoting others or addressing anyone specifically yet 2 different people took my statistical posts personally. Occasionally it is really is as simple as one side being wrong. That doesn't give that side the right to turn to personal attacks to get the topic shut down. And when I'm wrong I know full well I can't just start throwing insults either.

Weird, I actually agree with you for a change. Strongly agree in fact, at least on this point.

The things I've said that you disagree with just haven't happened yet. You'll come around.

I didn't want to dirty the other thread, but this is EXACTLY the type of arrogant non-sense that ruined the last thread. What is wrong with you guy? I'm trying to figure out how you function in your daily life if you are anything like this in the real world. You're welcome to your own opinion, but it's just that...an opinion. Nothing that we've disagreed on is factually provable yet or definitive one way or the other.

I think I just figured out the issue between you and I. You take everything I say to heart. That was a friendly jab. Every discussion on a message board isn't a war you have to wage. Everyone here seems like they're looking for a way to take everything personally. The one time I complained to mods was in response to a direct insult. That's when things go too far. If you reach far enough you can find an insult in just about every post that isn't in agreement with one of your own. That's no way to go about online discussion.
