Quick Summary:

Hiram Burgos gave up a first inning run, but settled in after that to go five strong while striking out seven Jumbo Shrimp. While the Shucker offense was a bit sluggish the bullpen locked things down and a Javier Betancourt 2-run HR in the second inning ended up being all they needed in the 3-1 win.

Harrison homers twice in 7-6 loss to Down East

Monte Harrison went 3-for-5 with two mammoth home runs on Tuesday night

By Gregory Young / Carolina Mudcats | August 1, 2017 11:15 PM ET

http://www.milb.com/assets/images/3/3/2/245894332/cuts/16x9_MonteHarrison_1cp4ttvp_xp36e1zh.jpg

The Mudcats could not overcome the poor start by Cody Ponce (4 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 2 HR). The Wood Ducks hit just about everything Ponce threw. The 3 unearned runs came after Jose Cuas dropped a throw to first. Parker Berberet worked 3 innings giving up the remaining run. Luke Barker worked two scoreless innings to close out the game.

I really love the approach Monte Harrison (3-5, 2 HR, 3 RBI) is taking this year, taking the fast ball back up the middle instead of trying to always pull it. The first home run was to dead center field where the ball rarely gets out in 5 Counties Stadium. Jake Gatewood and Luis Aviles were each 2-4 in the game.

Carolina Box Score

Cooper Hummel singles on a fly ball to center fielder Matt Lipka. Lucas Erceg scores. Luis Aviles to 2nd.

With Jose Cuas batting, wild pitch by Wes Benjamin, Luis Aviles to 3rd. Cooper Hummel to 2nd.

Jose Cuas called out on strikes.

Carolina Bottom of the 7th

Jose Cuas called out on strikes.

Corey Ray doubles (24) on a fly ball to left fielder Josh Altmann.

Isan Diaz was thrown out of the game after that last K. Frustrating year for him.

Looks like Ortiz has missed his past couple scheduled starts. Just trying to limit his innings?

He's been sick. He tried to go again last night, but was still under the weather.

From the Biloxi game summary linked above:

Luis Ortiz was scratched from a start due to sickness for the second time in three days, so Hiram Burgos (W, 1-0) filled in with a solid outing. The 29-year-old righty struck out seven batters over 5.0 innings, overcoming a first-inning run to pitch shutout ball the rest of the way.

Colorado Springs Box Score

Hopefully what played in Vegas, stayed in Vegas, because losing three of four happened in a lackluster fashion, including two 3-0 defeats.

RHP Michael Blazek allowed nine baserunners and three runs in four innings, but no home runs (zing). Four scoreless from the four relievers.

Final: Peoria 9, Wisconsin 3

Rattlers Can’t Hold Early Lead in Peoria

Chiefs rally from 3-0 deficit to beat Wisconsin 9-3

Chris Mehring, Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

PEORIA, IL – The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers had a 3-0 lead against the Peoria Chiefs after the top of the fourth inning, but the Chiefs evened the score with three runs in the bottom of the fourth and eventually pulled away. Peoria went on to a 9-3 victory over Wisconsin Tuesday night at Dozer Park to earn a split in the four-game series.

Mario Feliciano gave the Timber Rattlers (43-63 overall, 17-21 second half) a 1-0 lead with a two-out RBI single in the top of the first inning.

Feliciano figured into the next Wisconsin rally, too. He drew a four-pitch walk from Peoria starting pitcher Frederis Parra. Ronnie Gideon was next and he took two straight outside the strike zone from Parra before launching his eleventh home run of the season to give the Timber Rattlers a 3-0 lead.

Peoria (52-55, 21-17) rallied back to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. Danny Hudzina singled to start the inning and he was the final batter faced by Wisconsin starter Josh Pennington, who left on his pitch count. Rattlers reliever Nattino Diplan entered the game for Pennington and allowed a single to Juan Yepez before walking Dylan Carlson to load the bases.

Mick Fennell drove in the first run with a ground out. Diplan threw a wild pitch to let Yepez score. A high chopper off the bat of JR Davis was enough to get Carlson in with the tying run.

Carlos Herrera relieved Diplan to start the bottom of the sixth inning and hit Hudzina. A passed ball let Hudzina take second base. Herrera got the first out on a flyball to center, but Hudzina wound up at third on a ground out up the middle. Fennell gambled on a bunt and he just beat the throw to first to score Hudzina with the go-ahead run.

The Chiefs added to their lead in the bottom of the seventh. Herrera got ahead of Nick Plummer with two quick strikes, but wound up walking the Chiefs leadoff batter. A hit batsman put two on with no outs. Vince Jackson was next and he sent a deep fly to center that was caught by Zach Clark. Both runners tagged, but Clark’s throw to second nailed that runner for an unlikely double play. However, the defensive gem became moot when Ryan McCarvel doubled to left to score Plummer.

Peoria wasn’t done in the frame. Herrera walked Hudzina and gave up an RBI single to Yepez. Herrera left the game with a 3-1 count on Carlson.

Andrew Vernon took over for Herrera and threw a ball to walk Carlson and load the bases. Fennel followed with a two-run single to right and the Chiefs were up 8-3.

Pinch-hitter Kramer Robertson hit a solo homer with one out in the ninth inning to account for the final Peoria run.

Wisconsin designated hitter Keston Hiura had a pair of hard hit line drives to the outfield, but went 0-for-4 in the game. His 12-game hitting streak with the Timber Rattlers ended on Tuesday. Hiura, who had reached base in each of his first 27 games as a professional, also saw that streak come to an end.

The Timber Rattlers return to Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium to begin a seven-game homestand. Game one is against the Clinton LumberKings on Wednesday night. Drake Owenby (0-0, 2.38) is the scheduled starting pitcher for Wisconsin. The LumberKings have named Steven Ridings (0-1, 9.95) as their starter. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.

Wisconsin Box Score

RHP Carlos Herrera likely hit a "within inning" pitch count to be lifted mid-batter as described above. 39 pitches, 17 strikes in an inning and two-thirds.

Demi Orimoloye reached three times, and now has four multi-hit games in his last five.

AZL Brewers 5, AZL Cubs 4 (10 innings)

AZL Brewers Boxscore

Cubs' starter Yunior Perez had a 14.59 ERA coming into Tuesday night's game: check.

The Brewers have had the best offensive output in the AZL this year: check.

Predictably, Perez throws 5 innings of scoreless ball, striking out 8: check.

Brewers win anyway: check.

It's not often you win a game scoring 5 runs while also striking out 14 times while walking nary once, but here we are. After getting to extra innings with a few late runs, the Brewers won in the extra innings due to some good baserunning, and some bad baserunning as you'll see in the game log highlight below.

Julian Jarrard smacked two doubles, his 11th and 12th on the year. Jarrard is a 24 year old NDFA who has shown some very serious pop at the plate to go along with defensive versatility on the field. Though Jarrard doesn't walk much and will turn 25 next week, there is some skill there. Hope to see him promoted soon because the clock is ticking.

Chase Williams made his third rehab appearance and pitched 2 scoreless innings. He hasn't allowed a run yet through 4 innings this year. He was used as a reliever late last season with Wisconsin, so there's a chance that he may be nearing the end of his rehab process.

Wilfred Salaman allowed 4 runs in 5 innings, though he did pick off his 10th batter of the year. Gabe Friese ran his career-opening earned run-less streak to 20 1/3 innings with three perfect innings, including getting out of the 10th inning "jam." Get this guy out of Arizona already.

AZL Brewers Game Log

The 10th inning baserunning:

AZL Brewers Top of the 10th

Kevin Zamudio remains in the game as the designated hitter.

Jesus Lujano starts inning at 2nd base.

Tristen Lutz out on a sacrifice bunt, catcher Marcus Mastrobuoni to second baseman Yonathan Perlaza. Jesus Lujano to 3rd.

With Kenny Corey batting, wild pitch by Ivan Medina, Jesus Lujano scores.

Kenny Corey hit by pitch.

Pat McInerney called out on strikes.

Julian Jarrard flies out to center fielder Jose Gutierrez.

AZL Cubs Bottom of the 10th

Kevin Zamudio starts inning at 2nd base.

Offensive Substitution: Pinch-runner Yovanny Cuevas replaces Kevin Zamudio.

Jose Gutierrez reaches on a fielder's choice out, pitcher Gabe Friese to third baseman Julian Jarrard to shortstop Yeison Coca to pitcher Gabe Friese. Yovanny Cuevas out at 3rd. Jose Gutierrez to 2nd on the throw.

Yonathan Perlaza strikes out swinging.

With Jonathan Sierra batting, Jose Gutierrez caught stealing 3rd base, pitcher Gabe Friese to third baseman Julian Jarrard.
