I don't think the plan was to "punt" on this season. If that was the goal, they would not have signed Thames and traded for Shaw. They could have just rolled with Cooper or Aguilar at 1B and Perez at 3B.

 

Bullpens are always a work in progress. That's why it's prudent not spend a ton of money there. You see what you have as the year goes on, then bring in FAs, promote guys from the minors, make trades, etc.

 

Honestly, I don't expect next season to be much different. Will they throw some money at Swarzak or someone similar? Maybe. But for the most part, I think they'll start with guys like Jeffress, Barnes, Williams, Wang, maybe Hader/Suter if one isn't starting to go along with Knebel.
