Eveland / Mannon and other news

Any word on Eveland or Mannon? Also, I am not extremely concerned with Loewen signing as long as we take Weeks or Young. I thought Loewen was the riskiest of the three. It does move all of our picks up a slot as Balt. does not get a comp. pick. Look out for a pitcher at #39.

Good News

I got the word Mannon Signed !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A lot of credit should go to Jack Z , Mr Melvin and there staff for getting all the DFE signed. IMO last draft was a very good one, great job tothe Brew Crew Scouting staff.

Wow, that is great news. Thanks Mike!!!

Barnes, Eveland & Mannon. And 3 of our biggest organizational needs are 3B, LHP & corner OFs. The 2002 draft definitely looks a lot better today than it did last September.

It is good to see Melvin get these deals done. I have no worries now about the upcoming draft. The only thing I am wondering is where Toby is going to place everyone on the Power 50. That itself is a mystery.

I have been informed that both Tim Dillard & Simon Beresford have been signed as DFEs. That's 5 total signings using the draft & follow process. Nice work by the Milwaukee Brewers scouting staff to add 5 more talented ballplayers into the system.

Wow colby hits 5-5 on his top 5 DFE candidates. I think it's pretty clear that the Brewers like this process and are comfortable with it, though Eveland only sort of counts since they wanted him to sign last year. I wonder though with such a high number of players signed if they didn't use the process as a way to bridge some budgetary overflow from last year?

Poor Toby way back when he started the Power 50 he had to reach to call guys prospects, and now he's got guys who would have been top 30 material easily in those days on the outside looking in. Would help if we were in a position to be graduating guys off the Power 50 due to promotion. The post draft competition will be fierce.

From a poster over at T1:

6-4, 220 pound RHP out of Itawamba CC in Mississippi. He has been red hot this spring and undefeated with a 13-0 record. Signed for $600,000.

And for a refersher, here's what BA had to say about him as ranked as the #15 prospect from Mississippi:

The Brewers selected RHP/C Tim Dillard in the 15th round in 2001 and the 34th round a year ago, and hope to sign him as a draft-and-follow. If he doesn't turn pro this time he'll head to the University of Mississippi, where his father Steve starred en route to the major leagues. Dillard has good catch-and-throw skills but teams want to use his strong arm on the mound. He touches 94-95 mph and is solidly built at 6-foot-4 and 225 pounds.

$600,000 is a shock, if that figure is indeed right. I would have guessed that he would have signed to a number with one less zero. That's 2nd round money, and maybe it is indeed a typo. If not, the Brewers must really, really like this guy.

I hope they didn't cough up that much $, because to this novice it seems likely that some real good prep players will slip down to the later rounds and it would be a shame if we can't select them because we don't have enough money left in our draft coffers due to this signing.

I don't intend to take anything away from Dillard, I actually think he sounds very good, but the issue is that we paid him like a 2nd rounder (if the rumor is true), and he likely wouldn't have been drafted there.

What i've heard is that Dillard signed for more then 50k, but less than Dana Eveland did (I don't know Dana's bonus offhand, and we'll let Mike keep it private). So the initial report seems to have been erroneous.... maybe 60,000, but surely not 600,000.

It's been reported that Dillard would have had the best sinkerball in the draft this year, so that's why they signed him.... the sinker seems to be inline with Melvin's new reasoning.... i'll touch on that in the major league forum.

It shouldn't matter how much or little he signed for, because the team's payroll is several million dollars below budget, and so I'm sure the team has the resources available to sign quality players.
