Community Moderator

We are at the 20 hour countdown until the trade deadline. MLB Trade Rumors released their up-to-date Top 25 Deadline Day Trade Candidates. Let's have some fun with it. Who do you think is on the move before tomorrow's deadline and where do you think they end up?

Here are my guesses on some trade destinations...

Yu Darvish - Dodgers

Sonny Gray - Yankees

Justin Wilson - Brewers

Brad Hand - Rockies

Lance Lynn - Astros

Alex Avila - Cubs

Not just “at Night” anymore.

I'm guessing Stearns phone is quiet as a church mouse right now. Don't think he's gonna do a thing. I think what may happen is to now reassess where they are at in 2 weeks and then if he feels it necessary to make something happen he will then, but tomorrow?? It will be super quiet.

I think hand stays put, Wilson to the cubs, dsrvish to the Astros, gray to the Yankees, Lynn or cashner to the cubs. I feel like the cubs are comfortable rolling Quintana/ arrieta/lester as their playoff rotation. Cashner or Lynn should transition well to a pen roll with their hard stuff. I think if the brewers make a trade, it's with Detroit for kinsler and either verlander or Zimmerman for minimal prospects... but I think that's unlikely.

Aside from those you mentioned, I think the Dodgers get Britton.

I think the Cards will ask for a lot more from the Cubs for Lynn than from another team; highly doubt Lynn ends up there. Much better chance he ends up on the Astros.

Darvish - Dodgers

Lynn - Astros

and because they can...

One of Verlander or Samardzjia to the Cubs.

I predict that I will be glued to the TV and social media all day while I watch the rich get richer, and the Yankees, Cubs, Dodgers and Astros set cruise control to the LCS. While I sit, disappointed knowing that we did nothing to help our team, even though they played a great first half. It just seemed like for all the rumors and hype about us going to get some young, controllable talent, we ended up with Swarzak, who is gone in 2 months and isn't a difference maker, and some AAAA dime a dozen body named Tyler Webb, who we may as well file a Missing Persons report on since we got him.

I know people here worship Stearns, and he does a fine job collecting prospects. Using them though, jury's still out.

This is dead on. Nice post.

I just don't get it..DS claims they want young, controllable talent, and I 100% get that. Yet, I watch teams like the Cubs gets two controllable players in Wilson and Quintana, for quite frankly not all that much, and I ask myself...what is DS doing exactly?? It's like he makes one offer and if it doesn't get accepted, that's it. He draws a line in the sand, and never makes another offer. It's very perplexing. It's not like the Brewers are ever going to be competitive on their farm system alone. They are going to have to acquire players outside the organization as well.

Why did people start taking 'controllable young talent' to mean 'We are going to go after every player out there that isn't a rental.' ?

Less than 8 hours until the deadline now. My lone prediction for the Brewers isn't going to happen. Any last minute guesses on a move the Brewers may make today? No move at all is certainly a likely possibility as well, although I still think they do something even if it is a minor move.

Probably because every rumor website and every baseball writer with a Twitter account has linked the Brewers to every non rental out there over the last two weeks. I don't think anyone is advocating emptying the farm system to make a flurry of moves. Even just a second tier type splash like Straily or Kinsler, all we have done is rearrange deck chairs on the Titanic.

Stearns even said in his interview, while laughing a bit, that some of the links are true and a lot of them are false. Can't believe everything you read.

That being said, there were some players to be had out there. Time will tell whether or not it was smart to stay on the sidelines.

"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

Add Sonny Gray, Straily, and Justin Wilson to the Brewers and I'm not sure we catch the Cubs or take a WC spot and I don't think it helps for the future either. The second best thing Stearns can do today (the first best would be to flip Swarzak and other pieces) is to stand pat.

I'm still thinking the only thing we might do is something with the Tigers for Verlander and Kinsler. If we made that move, I could also see us trying to get involved with Baltimore for Britton and then the Mets for Granderson. Stearns has had some success dealing with Baltimore, which may help. Obviously we've struggled working with the Mets though. Those latter 2 moves would only happen if we get a significant rotation upgrade, otherwise they are kinda pointless.

I think the Brewers will end up with Kinsler. He would be an improvement over Villar both offensively and defensively. He is owed a fair amount of cash this year and has a 5 million dollar buy out on his team option for 2018. With an ultra low payroll the Brewers have the ability to absorb such a contract and buyout. Given that Detroit is looking to trim payroll they likely will move on from Kinsler after this season anyways, so why not get something in return now.

Sogard's ankle injury ended his hot streak and he could be included in a trade for Kinsler to provide coverage for Detroit along with a second tier minor league player or two.

I'd like to see a controllable reliever(2.5+ years) plus Ian Kinsler(maybe Phillips if cheap). Helps us this year, but also the future.

Unfortunately the controllable relievers sound stupidly expensive so doubt that comes to fruition.

If they don't add a reliever then it doesn't look like they are even trying. I can understand not looking for a starter given how well the starters have been doing and I can even understand standing pat on the offense as the team just needs to come out of an extended slump. But the bullpen has been pretty bad all year long and if we are going to stay in contention we have to be able to hold onto late leads.

I'm with you on this, and I'll add besides Swarzak, I would shop Knebel (closers' shelf lives are really short) and Thames to see who might bite. Sell high on guys now that aren't part of the big picture down the road.

How would you feel about trading for a guy in another team's system who is at AAA who is 5-1 with a 2.09 ERA, just under 1 strikeout per inning and opponents hitting under .260 off of him?

Well 'trying' is pretty relative, I'm sure they are always trying, now whether or not they are still trying to win this year, I'm not sure. I'm sure they'd like to, but I'm sure they also have a realistic picture of what their chances are at this point.

They already went out and got Swarzak who was one of the top rental pen arms available, so you can't say they aren't trying. Webb hasn't worked out so far, but I certainly understand what they were trying to do.

Bullpen help is still an overpriced commodity. They shouldn't be going too crazy in their position or anything.

Kind of surprised TX didn't move Darvish. Likely gone this year and he's really good. HAve to think they could have used an infusion to the farm after some trades in recent years. Can still try to pull the Chapman and resign him in the offseason

He was traded. One of many late announcement. Gotta be patient.
