Wang's contract selected; Guerra optioned to AAA

depending on how things shake out with the scheduled doubleheaders next week in iowa, junior guerra may only have one more turn in the rotation before he burns his final option. the brewers may be planning on recalling guerra next week just to preserve his option for 2018.

I agree this is a likely possibility, but who would the Brewers send down to make room? Would they send down Barnes? He has struggled for a while now.

Minor league hitters might just be the right thing for him (as long as it is not in CS). Otherwise they could DFA Drake or Torres, both of whom have been bad. Although they have given them a chance for this long, it would be surprising to let them go so close to Sept.

If Barnes is sent down over getting rid of Drake or Torres, wow... just wow. I will have very little faith in Stearns moving forward. Both Drake and Torres are just pure crap.

advantage to optioning barnes next week: if recalled in september, he wouldn't burn his 2017 option (having spent less than 20 days optioned).

advantage to dfa-ing drake or torres: it opens up a spot on the full 40-man roster.

advantage to the brewers' pitching staff the week guerra would need to be recalled to preserve his final option: two off days, plus another off day the following week.

I would love to see Guerra and Suter (when Anderson is back) just take the bullpen spots from Torres and Drake.

Below are stats from the last 28 days:

Barnes, 7.45 ERA, 1.072 OPS against

Drake 7.27, .945 OPS

Torres 3.00 ERA, .599 OPS

All have pitched 10 IP in that period, so small sample alert. Barnes could use some time in the minors to get things straightened out OR just rest his arm. And as pointed out can avoid burning an option if recalled in Sept.

I was one who was screaming back in May to get rid of Drake, Torres, and Hughes so I understand your argument. However, I'm starting to understand how difficult it is to evaluate RPs. A full season of 50-60 IP is really a small sample. Hughes has really turned it around so that is clearly a lesson learned for me. I think the Brewers are just trying to retain as much controllable talent as they can. Sending Barnes down for a while so they can hang on to Drake or Torres until Sept rosters expand makes some sense.

Both Drake and Torres' numbers look bad this year, but inext year they could be drastically better. I like Drake's 9.9 K/9 this year so clearly there is something to build on. Torres was very reliable last year. Then again, neither are getting younger and Torres is arby eligible. I have to believe they will try to avoid DFA both of these guys and that may mean Barnes to the minors when Chase gets back and avoid burning Guerr's option.

I enjoyed reading your post. Very informative and I agree with a lot of what you said but Torres doesn't belong on this team even as a mop up arm in September. He's absolutely garbage. Drake, fine as your lefty specialist but Torres sucks.

junior guerra starts the first game of a doubleheader today at iowa.

guerra had his best start since being optioned. 4.0 innings of a 7 inning doubleheader, two earned runs. an abbreviated 48 pitches, but this time, 33 for strikes. only one walk with three strikeouts.

i'm sensing a recall to be moved to the bullpen before he spends 20 days optioned and burns his final option.

well, guerra may still be recalled, but it will be after the expense of burning his final option. he's pitching today in colorado springs and has exceeded 20 days optioned to the minor leagues.

Is that a big concern on a 32 year old pitcher with 4 good months in the bigs?

Sort of. It means they need to make a decision on him next spring. Can't just option him to AAA and keep him as insurance. If he still had an option or two left it wouldn't be a huge deal.

Right but the starting 5 are probably set with Nelson, Davies, Anderson, Woodruff and Garza. Suter would be a good 6th in the minors. Who knows if they give Hader a shot at the rotation too. Seems like Junior is redundant to me.

Yeah. Not sure it makes that big of a deal. Guerra needs to make the roster next spring. If not, he'll have to be waived.

Injuries do happen so its nice to have the insurance, but I think the Brewers would go with youth if they need it next year. Burnes, F.Peralta, Ortiz, Wilkerson, Perrin, T.Williams will all be available.
