What sweet opportunities Timber Rattlers LHP Cameron Roegner (who has been stellar for over two months now, by the way) has had in 2017.

The Beloit native got to pitch in his hometown on May 24th (and did so very well), and tonight the Bradley University product gets to pitch in Peoria, IL, home of the university, in front of a big fireworks-ready crowd, and on a night when the Chiefs are celebrating Bradley athletics.

The second-year pro (22nd round, 2016) needs a bump to Carolina soon, partly because he was an older draft pick and just recently turned 24. But a promotion would have been earned, not just a product of placement by age.

Have fun tonight, sir.

I'd like to see Pierre get the bump to Wisconsin in August. He has been unreal since coming back from injury. I know it is Helena but young kid has hit .400 in July will OPSing .936! Only 20 this season. He was a big 800k signing for us to it is great to see him starting to excel! Until a player performs at Wisconsin though, have to hold enthusiasm.

Erceg had a streak of three consecutive games with a HR and five consecutive games with an extra base hit snapped in game 2 of the DH.

Wilkerson with another gem. He can't be worse than what Guerra is giving them. Yamamoto with another gem; he just keeps getting it done.

Nice to see the old Brandon Woodruff back. Just in time.

Mudcats earn doubleheader split with Wilmington

Erceg homered in his third straight and Yamamoto turned in a complete game gem on Saturday

By Carolina Mudcats | July 29, 2017 11:57 PM ET

http://www.milb.com/assets/images/2/7/0/235500270/cuts/Yamamoto_1_en42wt4i_uhcf619n.JPG

Lucas Erceg (2-3, HR) tied the game with a long home run in the 6th inning of game 1. The Mudcats lost the game when D. J. Burt led off the 7th for Wilmington with a double, stole third and scored on a wild pitch from Brad Kuntz (3 1/3 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 6 K) who took the loss. Marcos Diplan (3 2/3 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 5 BB, 3 K) was the starter. Diplan issued 4 walks in the 4th inning alone. Cooper Hummel was 2-2 with a walk to reach base all three trips to the plate in game 1.

Carolina Box Score Game 1

Carolina Game 1 Log

Game two was dominated by Jordan Yamamoto (7 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 7 K) who pitched a complete game shutout. His game score of 75 was his best of the year. Two of those walks came in the 7th when he appeared to tire a bit. Shao-Ching Chiang had a game score of 99 in his 9 inning no-hitter yesterday for Lynchburg to provide a point of reference.

Lucas Erceg went 0-3 in the nightcap to end his 3 game home run streak. Jake Gatewood (2-3, 2B, 3 RBI) knocked in 3 of Carolina's runs and Luis Aviles (2-2, Sac Fly) batted in the other two. Gatewood now has 33 doubles. The Mudcats' club record is 42. They interviewed Max McDowell between games but I missed that so I don't know the reason for Hummel starting both games of the double header. Carlos Belonis was hit in the finger trying to bunt in the second game and had to leave the game. No update on his status.

Carolina Game 2 Box Score

Carolina Game 2 Log

It was only two innings, but RHP Nattino Diplan was in need of a nice effort backing up LHP Cameron Roegner here. Check out the combined pitching line for Wisconsin -- you can allow hits (even four doubles) and win when you don't allow walks.

Man, if we could just bottle up the really good Demi.

Chris covered everything else wonderfully in the summary as usual.

Former Bradley University lefty Cameron Roegner started for Wisconsin — on Bradley University Night at Dozer Park, and allowed one run over six innings in front of 6,320.

Roegner limited the Chiefs to an RBI single in the third inning by rehabbing Cardinal Stephen Piscotty .

Later, in the fifth, Roegner struck out the major leaguer with a slider. The former Bradley University pitcher, on Bradley University Night, with school mascot Kaboom! working the grandstand, said “You try to think of (Piscotty) as just another batter up there and you have to get him out. It was an RBI situation and I didn’t want to give him something hard he could drive. So I went with that slider and it worked. That was pretty awesome.”

Final: Las Vegas 3, Colorado Springs 0

Sox Shut Out In Series Opener

Woodruff tosses five shutout frames Saturday night

By Robby Veronesi / Colorado Springs Sky Sox

An old friend listed in the summary, text is pasted below:

The Colorado Springs Sky Sox were shut out in the series opener of the four-game series, falling to the Las Vegas 51s, 3-0, in front of 6,625 at Cashman Field Saturday night.

After giving up four runs in his last outing Monday night against the Reno Aces, RHP Brandon Woodruff bounced back in a big way against the 51s, shutting out Las Vegas over five innings while striking out six batters and allowing five hits. The righty shut out a Pacific Coast League opponent for the first time since May 28 at Nashville, and struck out the most batters since striking out nine Dodgers at Oklahoma City June 3.

Woodruff received some help from some great defense, including a pair of outfield assists. 51s outfielder Victor Cruzado lined a second-inning double to left field, but Brett Phillips began a 7-6-2 relay to throw out Josh Rodriguez at home plate. Three innings later, right fielder Nate Orf made a diving catch in foul territory and promptly doubled off Gavin Cecchini to end the fifth inning.

The Sox (63-41) continue their lone season series with the 51s Sunday night at 9:05 PM Central. RHP Angel Ventura (5-2, 3.83 ERA) looks to build upon his July 25 victory when he faces Las Vegas right-hander Donovan Hand (2-5, 8.05 ERA).

Colorado Springs Box Score

Sky Sox still maintain a healthy 7.5 game lead despite all the Brewers' roster manipulations as of late -- this dedicated Brewers fan made the trip from San Diego to Vegas and was the first to mention LHP Wei-Chung Wang on his way to Milwaukee today, quite the Las Vegas-to-Houston-to-Chicago plane tour.

Colorado Springs Game Log

Not only is Nate Orf seeing time in right field, he's also your cleanup hitter given all the roster pillaging as of late. And don't get us wrong, we love Nate!

Helena Box Score

Seven combined HR's in the game; sour outing for RH starter Nelson Hernandez; Payton Henry had all but the single through the 4th inning in a classic "cycle watch", but struck out in his final two at-bats; in his Helena debut, catcher Alexandre Guenette reached base three times and spent the rest of the evening looking for Missoula's French restaurant district.

AZL Brewers 3, AZL Dodgers 2

AZL Brewers Boxscore

The AZL Brewers are first half Central Division champions! Playoffs, baby.

In an oddly low scoring affair, the Brewers were able to hang on to beat the second-place Dodgers by a score of 3-2. It was truly a make or break game - due to a rainout, the Brewers' team had played one less game than the Dodgers' team, and the Dodgers were only 0.5 game behind the Brewers coming into the game last night. So had the Dodgers won, they would have won the division too.

There was no walkoff as the winning run was scored in the bottom of the fifth inning, but credit the Brewers' relievers who allowed one run over the final 7 innings of the game, and nothing after the 5th. Joaquin De La Cruz did the bulk of the heavy lifting, pitching innings 3 thru 6. He allowed a run on 4 hits, striking out 3. The 21 year old curveball-splitter specialist pitched to a 2.25 ERA in 28 July innings, good for 7th best in the league, and has a sparkling 2.52 ERA on the season (50 innings). De La Cruz also has one of the higher ground ball rates in the system, which makes him intriguing even though he does not throw all that hard. Due to being a little older, I wouldn't be shocked to see the Brewers move him up to Helena at some point in August, but we'll see.

Brendan Murphy and Gabe Friese pitched a scoreless final 3 innings. This was Murphy's 4th pro outing after being drafted in the 4th round, and the first time he did not allow any runs. He also picked up his first professional hold, which I'm sure he'll always remember. 22 year old nondrafted free agent signee Gabe Friese concluded an unbelievable first half with 1 1/3 more scoreless innings to close out the game. Friese has pitched 17 1/3 earned run-less innings to begin his pro career. He's allowed a scant 7 hits, an even scant-er 2 walks, all while striking out 18. You'd have to think he's a candidate to move on up in August as well.

Adrian Houser and Chase Williams made their second rehab appearances.

As for the offense, another NDFA lead the way as Pat McInerney logged a single, a double, and a walk. It was the culmination of a fine first half for the big guy (listed at 6'5, 245), in which he lead the AZL in home runs (7), and was in the top six in doubles (10), RBI (23), walks (22), slugging (.576), and OPS (.977).

36th round pick and utility man extraordinaire Kenny Corey capped a fine first half as well with a double. He finished 2nd in the league in doubles (12), and batting average (.388). Tristen Lutz singled and scored what would turn out to be the game winning run. Lutz' first 58 pro plate appearances see him with a sweet slash of .288/.362/.615.

AZL Brewers Game Log

Pitching Change: Yeison Cespedes replaces Marshall Kasowski.

Jesus Lujano flies out to left fielder Eric Peterson.

Nick Egnatuk singles on a line drive to center fielder Kevin Aponte. Tristen Lutz scores. Pat McInerney to 2nd.

Julian Jarrard strikes out swinging.

Friese gets out of a potential game-tying jam:

Offensive Substitution: Pinch-hitter Marcus Chiu replaces Jeremy Arocho.

Marcus Chiu called out on strikes.
