Sometimes I just don't understand the use of pitchers at the minor levels. Typically there is a pitch limit for an individual inning, such as when Woodruff threw thirty something in 2/3rds of an inning and got pulled. Yesterday Matt Ramsey closed with a big lead in the AAA night game, throwing 29 pitches. Today they put threw him again in a day game and didn't get thru an inning. I would be concerned about getting injured if I was a pitcher. Needless to say I think it's wrong, especially with 10 guys in the AAA Pen.

By Biloxi Shuckers

Biloxi Shuckers Box Score

Quick Summary:

Jon Perrin tossed six strong innings striking out five while giving up no runs. Nick Ramirez also logged two innings while giving up no earned runs. Unfortunately for the sharp pitching with two outs in the 8th inning a Blake Allemand error lead to four unearned runs for Ramirez. The offense didn't really help matters only logging one run on eight hits. Johnny Davis had a solid day going 3-4 and stealing a base to lead the offense. All said and done it was a painful 4-1 loss.

Pitching Summary:

On the mound, Jon Perrin (6.0 IP, 4 H, 5 K) started the game while Nick Ramirez (2.0 IP, 3 H, 4 R, BB) provided the relief.

Erceg hits grand slam in sweep clinching victory

Lucas Erceg drove in a career high five RBIs and Conor Harber earned the win

Conor Harber (5 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 4 K) started and got the win for the Mudcats. Trey Supak (3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K) followed Harber and Luke Barker (1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 0 K) finished the game.

Lucas Erceg (3-5, HR, 5 RBI) broke open the game in the 3rd inning with a grand slam. I would like to highlight Corey Ray (3-5, 2B) who started off the 3rd inning offense with a hit to center. It was a routine single slightly to the left field side of center. Probably 99% of the time it would have been a single but Ray ran hard out of the batter's box and never hesitated in going to second. A few minutes later, Erceg launched his grand slam. Luis Aviles was 2-4 in the game.

AZL Giants 7, AZL Brewers 6

AZL Brewers Boxscore

Five runs given up late sink the Brewers again, and they go from way up in the division to being tied with the Dodgers for first. It would be a shame if they lost the first half crown after playing so well.

Final: Ogden 8, Helena 7

Five-Run Eighth Sinks Brewers

Ogden scores five-runs to steal away an 8-7 victory and claim a series sweep over the Brewers

HELENA, MT - The Helena Brewers (15-21) saw a late lead slip away as they fell to the Ogden Raptors (21-15) 8-7 at Kindrick Legion Field on Wednesday night.

Leading 7-3 going to the eighth inning, Helena sent Matt Hardy back to the mound for a third inning. The right-hander allowed three straight hits and after a ground out surrendered a double to Henrik Clementina that closed the Brewers lead to one run. Cody Beckman entered the game and struck out the first batter he faced, but Tyler Adkison singled up the middle to bring in the tying run. Following another single, Beckman got a bunt back to the mound and made a low throw to Gabriel Garcia that the first baseman dropped, allowing the go-ahead run to score and give Ogden an 8-7 lead.

After falling behind 3-0 out of the gate, Helena grabbed a run back on a solo home run by Garcia in the third, his fourth of the season. Garcia finished 3-for-5 with a double, a home run, an RBI and two runs scored.

The Brewers big inning came in the fourth. Payton Henry and Zach Clark walked before Franly Mallen singled to load the bases. Chad McClanahan then bounced a ball over the head of the Raptors first baseman Luis Paz, bringing in two runs. A throwing error allowed another run to score and McClanahan advanced to third, giving the Brewers a 4-3 lead. Jay Feliciano laced a single into centerfield, extending Helena's lead to 5-3.

Starter Jayson Rose recovered from a rocky start to pitch 5.0 innings, allowing three runs on six hits while walking just one and striking out a career-high eight batters. Beckman took the loss after allowing one unearned run in 1.2 innings of work.

The Brewers have a day off on Thursday before starting a three-game series in Missoula on Friday night at 7:05 PM (8:05 Central). Helena is scheduled to send RHP Harold Chirino (1-3, 6.75) to the mound against LHP Franklyn Soriano (1-3, 5.06).

Brewers drop third straight after late Odgen scoring surge

Erik C. Anderson, Helena Independent Record

FIVE PHOTOS IN A GALLERY AT THE LINK

On a night when the temperatures cooled slightly in the state's capital, the Brewers heated up.

Just as quickly, like Montana weather, everything cooled.

With a subtle blue sky and cloud cover, the Brewers looked like they were ready to remedy a two-game losing streak Wednesday in a home game against Ogden. The Raptors used a five-run eighth inning to take an 8-7 lead and sneak away with a win and series sweep over the Brewers at Kindrick Legion Field in front of 628 fans. To make matters worse for the Brewers, they were eliminated from contending for a first-half playoff spot with three games to go before the All-Star break.

“They got a couple bloop singles and that’s luck,” Brewers manager Nestor Corredor said. “They’re a good team. They never give up. They got a couple bloop singles. Windy today. We misplayed that one. And the costly error at third base. We should be still playing,” Corredor said just after the game went final.

Gabriel Garcia, with the crowd’s voice rising in anticipation, looked like he may have knotted the game back up in the eighth when he carried a shot to right-center field. The ball sent Brayan Morales to the wall, and Morales sent Garcia to the dugout, ricocheting off the wall and snaring the out.

The Brewers (15-21) had come back once, but twice proved too much.

“It’s tough when you lost a game practically when you have control for most of the game, but we need to learn from this,” Corredor said. “Hopefully in the next three in Missoula we can put it all together.”

The Raptors (21-15) got off to a lead in a big way in the first inning when Romer Cuadrado homered give the Raptors a 3-0 lead.

The Brewers put some men on base in the game’s opening innings, but could not score until Garcia, who went 3 for 5, hit a solo home run in the bottom of the third.

Then, the Brewers broke out.

Chad McClanahan slashed a double on a line drive to right field, scoring three runs, while Cuadrado, who finished 3 for 5 at the plate, was credited with a throwing error as he tried to bring the ball in. Jay Feliciano kept the scoring going, singling on a ground ball to drive in another run.

When it was all said and done, the Brewers led 5-3 after five innings.

In the bottom of the sixth, Garcia knocked a two-out double down the right field line. Payton Henry took a 4-0 walk out to get on base, and then a wild pitch moved Garcia to third and Henry to second. Another four-pitch walk to Zach Clark ended Cespedes’ night of relief.

Conor Costello came in with bases loaded and two outs on the board.

Costello couldn’t contain Franly Mallen. Mallen, who went 3 for 5, popped a blooper single over the gap between first and second and brought in two more runs.

Carlos Felix (2-1) went four innings for the Raptors after making the start. He surrendered six hits, but only on earned run while striking out five.

Francis Cespedes came in for Felix in the fifth inning.

The Brewers countered with Jayson Rose (1-3) on the mound. Rose lasted five innings, giving up six hits and three earned runs, while striking out a career-high eight batters.

Matt Hardy supplanted in the sixth and started his relief effort off nicely.

In the eighth inning, the Raptors came back and sealed it. Starling Heredia singled to drive in a run and Hendrick Clementina doubled to bring in two more. Then, Tyler Adkison singled to score another, and Brayan Morales reached on a fielding error by Garcia, scoring one more run. In the brutal innings for Brewers fans, the Raptors sent 10 men to the plate.

A night after committing four errors, the Brewers trimmed that figure down, though the lone final error, as Corredor said, could have been the difference between a loss and extra innings. The Brewers racked up 12 hits to Ogden’s 13, but couldn’t find magic once more late.

The Brewers are off Thursday before heading to Missoula for a three-game series against the Osprey. That trio of games closes out the first half of the season. The Billing Mustangs sit in first place with a 3 1/2 game lead over the Brewers. On Wednesday, the Mustangs' contest against Orem was tied 9-9 in the sixth ending before it was called a tie due to a rain delay. That effectively ended any hopes for the Brewers to climb back up the first-half standings and grab a playoff berth.

Taylor Jungmann threw five perfect innings en route to his sixth Triple-A win of the season. (Paat Kelly photo)

From the summary linked above which you'll read in full --

"Mauricio Dubon would provide the day's exclamation point in the seventh inning, launching an opposite-field three-run home run over the right field wall. The third Triple-A home run for the second baseman scored Rivera and Wren as the Sky Sox combined to score 25 runs over the first two games of the series."

Taylor Jungmann has been really, really solid all year, including AAA, including at home in AAA.
