For every Medeiros start there has always been a "but..." about his performance. Not tonight. Ks a little low, but I'll take zero BB and zero ER in 6 IP any day.

And Luis Ortiz seems to have figured something out recently.

Ortiz tosses career-high seven innings of one-run baseball in win

Shuckers stave off ninth inning comeback bid by Wahoos in series opener

Luis Ortiz tossed a career-high seven innings of one-run baseball on Tursday night. (Mark P Driscoll)

Biloxi Shuckers Box Score

Quick Summary:

Biloxi nearly spoiled a dominant Luis Ortiz start, but the Shuckers held on for the 5-4 win. Ortiz started the game going seven strong while striking out seven, walking none, and only giving up one run. The offense was lead by Clint Coulter and Angel Ortega both of which hit homeruns on the day. For Coulter it was his 12th on the season. Things got interesting once the game got turned over to Jorge Lopez in the 9th inning. Lopez had a disasterous inning giving up three runs while looking totally lost. Luckily he stopped the bleeding to preserve the win.

Pitching Summary:

On the mound, Luis Ortiz (7.0 IP, 4 H, ER, 7 K) started the game while Tayler Scott (1.0 IP) and Jorge Lopez (1.0 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, K) provided the relief.

Hitting Summary:

Clint Coulter (2-4, R, 2 RBI, HR)

Blake Allemand (2-4, R, RBI)

Angel Ortega (1-4, R, 2 RBI, HR)

Kodi Medeiros (6 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K) pitched through the 6th inning for the 4th start in a row. Eric Hanhold (2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K) was credited with a blown save but picked up the win. Nate Griep picked up his 18th save by working the 9th.

Trent Clark (1-3, 2 BB, SB) reached base 3 times. Corey Ray had a home run in 5 at bats and also stole a base. He had a "Natural" type moment on his home run. The ball hit off the equipment shed behind right field and when somebody returned the ball to the press box it had a flat area on one side. Lucas Erceg was 1-4 but had the game winning hit with a 2 run double in the 8th inning.

Oh boy, Tyrone Taylor, who with Clint Coulter and Johnny Davis are the only active OF's on Biloxi's disjointed roster, hasn't played since the 20th. Angel Ortega has been forced into the starting LF role for now (missing Korea-departed Michael Choice with Michael Reed on the DL).

From the Penscaola News Journal Game Story:

Joe Hudson froze in disbelief, then shook his head.

What could you do?

In a literal eye-blink, Hudson's game-tying, scorched liner up the middle was snared by Biloxi reliever Jorge Lopez, inches from his ear lobe for the final out, thwarting the Blue Wahoos' dramatics in a 5-4 Shuckers win Tuesday night.

"That ball caught him," said Blue Wahoos manager Pat Kelly, emphasizing it was not the other way around. "Joe did a great job. Base hit up the middle ties the game. We probably go first and third there.

"Sometimes this game is not fair."

But it still made for quite the ending amid a crowd of 4,019 at Blue Wahoos Stadium in a game that once seemed decided. It began a five-game home series for the Blue Wahoos.

The Shuckers led 5-0 after seven innings behind a pair of home runs and the brilliance of starter Luis Ortiz, one of the consensus top three rated prospects in the Milwaukee Brewers organization.

Ortiz rolled a pair of sevens with a season-high innings worked and seven strikeouts.

"We didn't get him early," Kelly said. "I think in previous games we got to him early. He is like most starters, especially big guys, once they get settled in, they are pretty good.

"He had a really good breaking ball. He was able to throw that behind in the count, ahead in the count to put guys away and he's just a good pitcher. That's why (Brewers) traded for him a few years ago and I'm sure that's why there were so many scouts in the stands (Tuesday) looking at him."

Likely not going anywhere, but due diligence by others, baby.

AZL Dodgers 8, AZL Brewers 3

AZL Brewers Boxscore

With a win, the Brewers would have just about put the first half championship away, but instead the Dodgers pull to within a half game.

Tristen Lutz, who after an extremely hot first few games has been struggling, hit his third home run. No Brewer had more than one hit. Julian Jarrard appeared in a game for the first time since July 9th.

As mentioned a few days ago, Adrian Houser returned to the mound about 13 months to the day since his last start for Biloxi. He allowed an unearned run. Great to see him back.

As mentioned earlier in the thread, Houser was relieved by Chase Williams, who we last saw 12 months ago in Wisconsin. Scroll up if you want to see my brief scouting report on him.

AZL Brewers Game Log
