Mudcats swept after falling 7-1 in Buies Creek

Marcos Diplan allowed seven runs on 10 hits in the series finale loss

By Carolina Mudcats | July 23, 2017 6:35 PM ET

http://www.milb.com/assets/images/9/1/4/227352914/cuts/16x9_Gatewood1_4ehd4xkm_84q09rmh.jpg

The Mudcats fall two games under .500 on the year and are dead last in their division, 9 games out, in the second half. Only Potomac Nationals have been worse in the second half. They fall to 6-13 against Buies Creek and combined with the T-Rats 4-7 against Quad Cities, they are now 10-20 against Astros affiliates. Fortunately, those are the only two intersecting teams.

Marcos Diplan (3 1/3 IP, 10 H, 7 R, 3 BB, 5 K) continues a virtually lost season. Parker Berberet worked 3 2/3 scoreless innings and Brad Kuntz worked the 8th.

Trent Clark drew the only Mudcat walk of the game. They have been limited to one walk in the last two games. Mudcats' hitters racked up another 11 strike outs in this game. Jake Gatewood was 2-4 with his 32nd double and Jose Cuas had a triple.

Final: West Michigan 6, Wisconsin 4 (13 innings)

Rattlers Fall 6-4 in 13 Innings to Whitecaps

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

As noted in the game story the West Michigan defense made some outstanding plays in extra innings including a catch near the wall on a ball that was well hit to deep left field by Trever Morrison in the 10th that would have given the Rattlers a walk off win had it been a foot deeper.

The game highlights include a sweet 6th inning relay from right fielder Demi Orimoloye to second baseman Trever Morrison to catcher Mario Feliciano to nail a Whitecaps runner at home.

Wisconsin Box Score

The Rattlers batters followed up yesterday's 15 strike outs with 18 more K's today. Unfortunately Keston Hiura was not immune as he was a strikeout victim three times. On a brighter note Hiura finished with two singles (2-for-6) and has now had at least one hit in 19 of his first 20 professional games. Hiura also had a solid at bat in extra innings in which he fouled off six straight pitches and faced 11 total pitches before a ground out to third base.

A good day at the plate for Ronnie Gideon who was 3-for-4 with a double. He was removed in the 8th inning for a pinch runner. In hindsight it would have been nice to have his bat in the lineup for the four extra frames.

Not a bad day for Timber Rattlers pitchers all around. Jordan Desguin went 4.0 innings allowing just one hit without issuing a single walk. Despite getting the loss, Daniel Brown pitched well for the first few extra innings and finished with 7 K's over 4.0 innings. Brown now has 54 strikeouts over 53.0 innings this season.

Three Homers Power Brewers to 10-5 Win

Martinez, Henry and Feliciano all go deep as Brewers split series with Chukars

By Garrett Greene / Helena Brewers

Helena Box Score

Like so many other prospects in the Brewers' system this year, Payton Henry is having a good season if you can get past the batting average. Despite hitting .225, Henry has an OPS of .822 and an ISO of .236. Granted in the inflated offensive environment of the Pioneer League, that isn't super impressive, but you'll sure take it from a young catcher. Henry was one of three Brewers to hit long balls on Sunday. He hit his fifth on the year. Henry was joined by the hulking Jay Feliciano (also his fifth), and Yeraldy Martinez (his fourth).

The contact-challenged Martinez had three hits, which is the first time he's done that this year, and matched his total from last year.

Nelson Hernandez, the Brewers' de facto ace, pitched well save for surrendering four runs in the fourth inning. Hernandez works fast and has a good change-up, but neither his change-up nor his breaking ball is an out pitch.

Cody Beckman pitched around a few hits in the ninth and ran his career opening run-less streak to 8 innings.

RHP Bubba Derby was cruising until the 4th, and LHP Wei-Chung Wang and RHP Tom Wilhelmsen were victimized for late solo home runs that proved huge.

SS Mauricio Dubon just turned 23, what a trade. 14-for-his-last-35.

Brewers righty strikes out seven in second shutout of the season

Multiple quotes from Aaron within, including this awesome one:

Aaron Wilkerson's pitch count stood at 97 after holding Double-A Mississippi to one hit over eight innings on Sunday. He entered the Biloxi dugout before the start of the ninth with some big ideas.

"I didn't know how many pitches I was at," Wilkerson said. "As I walked in, I saw [manager Mike Guerrero] was on the phone and I told him you can go ahead and hang that up."

Brutal April, but you can see the month-by-month improving splits for Johnny Davis, salvaging season-long numbers.
