Mudcats blanked 1-0 in series finale loss

Jordan Yamamoto allowed just one unearned run and struck out seven in the loss

By Carolina Mudcats | July 18, 2017 3:18 PM ET

http://www.milb.com/assets/images/2/7/0/235500270/cuts/Yamamoto_1_en42wt4i_uhcf619n.JPG

Here's some flavor of the game from the game story:

The Mudcats left nine men on base and were 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position in the loss. Raudes left two on in both the fourth and fifth innings and Boyd stranded three in the seventh and one in the eighth before pitching a three up, three down ninth.

Boyd earlier escaped a bases loaded jam in the seventh after striking out Monte Harrison to end the frame and left Corey Ray at third after getting Lucas Erceg to pop out to end the eighth. Erceg's pop up nearly fell for a hit, but was snagged by Salem's Jeremy Rivera with a sliding, over-the-shoulder, catch in shallow left.

Jordan Yamamoto (7 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 7 K) was the hard luck loser when an error by Isan Diaz led to the game's only run. Yamamoto has maybe the best command of the remaining Mudcats' starters. I especially like that he can spot his curveball to either side of the plate rather than just throwing it down the middle. Wuilder Rodriguez worked the eighth walking one and striking out two while lowering his ERA under 1.00 at 0.99.

6 hits and 5 walks for the Mudcats but no runs. Trent Clark (2-3, 2B, BB) was caught twice trying to steal which didn't help. Jake Gatewood and Luis Aviles were each 1-3 with a walk. Max McDowell was 2-3 with a double.

AUDIO via Monday's Sky Sox pre-game: Interesting chat with Nate Orf, discusses his newly-needed outfield play, Garrett Cooper's maturation as a person and teammate in addition to as a player, and we learn that somehow a failure in a new drainage system caused the additional "wet grounds" rainouts in Colorado Springs after the initial downpours

Final: Omaha 9, Colorado Springs 7

Late-Inning Rally Falls Short In 9-7 Loss

Sox send 11 men to the plate in six-run seventh inning

By Robby Veronesi / Colorado Springs Sky Sox

Relatively brief, so we'll old school it with a copy-and-paste:

The Sky Sox offense came alive after the sixth inning for the second straight game, but the Omaha Storm Chasers hung on for a 9-7 win in front of 4,772 at Werner Park Tuesday afternoon.

Down 7-0 entering the seventh inning, Colorado Springs (58-35) used a six-run, two-out rally to pull within a run. The Sox drew four walks off reliever Christian Binford, with Tyler Bortnick driving in Lewis Brinson on the final walk. Gabriel Noriega followed one batter later with a two-run single up the middle to score Nick Noonan and Tyler Heineman.

Kyle Wren grounded the second consecutive RBI single up the middle to score Bortnick, and Mauricio Dubon drove in Noriega and Wren on a two-run double into the left field corner to complete the inning's offense. In all, the Sky Sox sent 11 batters to the plate and batted around in an inning for the second straight game after sending 10 men to the plate in the 12th inning Monday night.

After the hosts plated an eighth run in the bottom of the seventh, the Sky Sox cut the deficit to a single run with one in the top of the eighth. After Nate Orf led off the inning with a double down the left field line, Noonan grounded a single past the diving Dean Anna at second base for the third baseman's first hit of the afternoon.

***

Colorado Springs Box Score

Chris Colabello 0-for-4 with a walk in his Sky Sox maiden voyage; this box score lineup isn't very recognizable compared to early this season, nothing unusual in that.

If you check his most recent ten-game log, while several outings have been positive, RHP Angel Ventura hasn't been totally immune from a tough one like today's.

Colorado Springs Game Log

Wily Peralta threw 21 pitches, 10 strikes --

Omaha Bottom of the 7th

Pitching Change: Wily Peralta replaces Tom Wilhelmsen.

Dean Anna walks.

Cheslor Cuthbert grounds out, shortstop Mauricio Dubon to first baseman Chris Colabello. Dean Anna to 2nd.

Ryan O'Hearn reaches on a fielding error by shortstop Mauricio Dubon. Dean Anna scores.

Frank Schwindel grounds into a double play, third baseman Gabriel Noriega to second baseman Tyler Bortnick to first baseman Chris Colabello. Ryan O'Hearn out at 2nd.

And a AAA Sky Sox debut --

Omaha Bottom of the 8th

Pitching Change: Jeanmar Gomez replaces Wily Peralta.

Logan Moon walks.

With Garin Cecchini batting, Logan Moon steals (1) 2nd base.

Garin Cecchini grounds out, second baseman Tyler Bortnick to first baseman Chris Colabello. Logan Moon to 3rd.

Brayan Pena singles on a ground ball to center fielder Lewis Brinson. Logan Moon scores.

Jack Lopez out on a sacrifice bunt, pitcher Jeanmar Gomez to first baseman Chris Colabello. Brayan Pena to 2nd.

Ruben Sosa grounds out, shortstop Mauricio Dubon to first baseman Chris Colabello.

Yamamoto just keeps getting the job done. He isn't known for velocity, but his K rate is >9 which is very good for a 21-year-old in high A (and a 20-year-old in low A last year).

Would love an updated scouting report on him.

Final: DSL Pirates 9, DSL Indians/Brewers 7

The Pirates scored six runs in the top of the seventh as they defeated the Brewers co-op team by a score of 9-7.

DSL Indians/Brewers Box Score

No Brewers pitchers saw action in this one, but a handful of position players did, with Edwin Sano going 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI out of the leadoff spot. Shortstop Elian Gonzalez went 1-for-3 with a double before being lifted for a pinch hitter.

He reminds me a lot of Yovanni. He really has been flying under the radar.

Yes, do read the above for details on the H-Crew's eight runs scored...

Helena Box Score

Actually, three of the seven Brewer pitchers fared well, especially recently-turned 21-year-old 24th round RHP Robbie Hitt, who stranded two inherited runners, and then tossed two more scoreless, walking none and fanning three.

If you're into analyzing a five-run 1st and a ten-run 4th for the bad guys, then you'll find it here.

He's not Yovanni. He and Medeiros are the two pitchers I keep missing at Mudcat games but the season isn't over yet. The reports I have heard always make me put him in that group with Ventura and Perrin. Guys who don't rely on velocity. Unfortunately that usually means we have to take a wait and see approach with those guys and see how their stuff plays as they move up.

EDIT: I think I remember some report about an uptick in velocity with him but I can't find it. If true and there has been an actual change in the skill set, then yes, there might be something there. Until I hear such, I rank him down list despite the results.

but it's not like every guy suddenly forgot every piece of advice he gave

I think the point is that Gallardo wasn't a high velocity guy either - he usually sat around 92.

As long as someone has a K rate >9, I don't particularly care how hard they throw. At 21 and in high A, there is some projection there even if he is only 6' tall.
