Michael Fulmer

Why not trade for the Wisconsin native Zimmermann instead? The Tigers might want to dump his contract so the trade cost could be much lower.

Because I don't trust him to not turn back into a pumpkin and $50 million over two years is a lot to take on for a decent chance of that happening.

From Bob Nightengale:

The Detroit #Tigers are listening to offers on starter Michael Fulmer, but teams know price tag is steep. They have also made OF Nick Castellanos available.

I get the sense that a few GM's are making guys "available" at a wild overpay price...to the point that they may as well not be available. Archer, Fulmer, Realmuto, Degrom all seem to fall into that category...I'll add that Degrom is so incredibly valuable that maybe his price isn't an overpay but it's probably more than any team can reasonably pay, but you generally get the idea.

rarely see three team deals, but

O's get - Castellanos/Ortiz

Tigers get: Santana or Phillips/Diplan

Brewers get: Machado/Zimmermann

Brewers give less value for taking on Zimmermann contract

O's get really good OF, plus pitching prospect

Tigers get out of Zimmermann contract plus pick up some nice pieces

What about Fiers? He's not much better than anyone we have but I would take him over Miley or Wilkerson when Peralta's innings eventually need to be managed. He's pitching well this year, owed less than $3M, and actually has one more year of team control left. Can't imagine Detroit would want much in return.

Noted on another board, but the Tigers can't be that motivated to dump Zimmermann's deal given their payroll slowly shrinking anyway with the remnants of the past going away.

The Brewers cannot take on $60+ million (if you include Machado) for 3 months of Machado even if Zimmermann is improved. Don't really care if Zimmermann may be a decent pitcher for 2 years after that.

The O's probably don't want Castellanos. They want closer to MLB-type players, but Castellanos is a FA after 2019.

Fulmer is a guy that absolutely should be targeted - he has his occasional bad start that blows up his numbers but he's otherwise very, very good. Arcia, Woodruff, Phillips go straight into their starting lineup for 4-6yrs at premium positions and rather cheaply. Tigers lose their SS after this year with nobody in the pipeline and Phillips upgrades their current OF and is better than their current top OF prospects. Woodruff backfillls Fulmer's open spot and their top 4 prospects are pitchers (all top 100) and all 1.5-2.5yrs away still.

That won't get it done for Fulmer.

Start with offering Burnes or Peralta to at least keep the Tigers on the phone.

Michael Fulmer was hammered to the tune of seven runs in 4 2/3 innings and took a loss to the Astros on Saturday.

He gave up 10 hits including RBI-doubles to Josh Reddick and George Springer, and solo homers to Reddick and Evan Gattis. Today's pounding knocks Fulmer's record down to 3-9 with a 4.50 ERA in 19 starts. He has 93 strikeouts and 38 walks in 112 innings.
