The fan in me says LETS PLAY. Unless he pre-agrees to a contract extension though it's a no to me, especially considering the money he's going to command at his age. The back end of the deal will end up like Verlanders imo.

Reminder, he is a free agent at years end and the Brewers will get a supplemental pick.

I think your crossing items here.

Yes as a small market team, the Brewers will get a supplemental pick between rounds 2 & 3 this coming season. By getting a group B pick, they will also get an additional 500K in their international signing pool.

The Brewers would not get a pick for Darvish departing as a Free Agent.

a) for a player to be eligible for a qualifying offer, the player needs to be in that organization the entire system. Hence by not dealing Darvish, the Rangers would have the opportunity to extend a qualifying offer. Anyone else... no dice.

I love watching Yu Darvish pitch. A player I would love to see in Milwaukee. However I don't see a way that this deal makes sense for the Brewers, as Darvish will be an expensive rental who we'd be very unlikely to sign to an extension. I just so badly wish it wasn't so...

Yep, if the Brewers could get Darvish to agree to an extension as part of a trade with the Rangers, back up the prospect truck. Saving that though, this is not something the Brewers should be doing unless the price is a lot lower than I assume it is.

Agreed. I assume we'll explore the option, but we shouldn't tap into the top 10 prospects for a rental...not at this stage of the rebuild.

Darvish's "performance" tonight should put to rest any thoughts of this happening, he got lit up like a Christmas tree.

Because one start right before the trade deadline tells the tale of a 3-4 year sample size?

Well then he will be in good company with our bullpen.

Hopefully tonight's game will put to bed any stupidly of trading prospects for rentals.

1-7 with an ERA over 5 last 8 starts

Before tonight, since June 1:

8IP 3ER 12K

6.2IP 2ER 6K

7.1IP 2ER 6K

4.1IP 7ER 4K

6IP 2ER 6K

7IP 0ER 10K

5IP 5ER 6K

7IP 1ER 4K

7IP 3ER 9K

5IP 3ER 8K

1 bad start, 1 bleh/bad start. He's getting zero run support as well. Under no circumstance should we be trading for him unless he's to be signed to an extension but 1-7 is skewed.

I'd consider 3 of those starts bad. Obviously the 4.1/7 and the 5/5 is bad but the 5/3 is bad too (5.4 ERA and you need your bullpen to cover at minimum 3 innings, 4 if it's a home start.)

No. But his last handful of starts have been...uh, unspectacular shall we say. That would lead one to possibly think that perhaps something is awry mechanically, or he is nursing a nagging injury. If you are paying big bucks for a 2 month rental, do you want to take any chance those 2 months begin with a DL trip, or two or three more bad starts while he "figures things out"?

If your answer is yes, I can't help you.
