September call-ups

statman0007
This is not High School where a JV player gets a reward for having a great year by being promoted to Varsity for a few games. The Brewers will (and should) do what's best for the team. Not what's best for Wren, Barbosa, Cravy, or anyone else. Just as when players are FA, there is no loyalty- they do what they think is best for themselves. If it weren't for roster implications down the line, I'm sure they would have brought up Davis and/or Wren.

Nice loyalty to the existing players like Dejesus, Wren and Orf, who grind it out all year, only to be bypassed by an indy player pickup. Not to impressed with this move.

Boo boo. This is about winning baseball games not making everyone feel included and make things fair.

Every team in the league brings up players in September, whether it be a promotion or reward. Since I think Wren got screwed, I'll also go one further and say Jungmann got screwed too. They call up Guerra and not Jungmann? The guy just had one of the best all time best seasons in Colorado Springs history and gets no love. Both Memphis and Colorado Springs lost players to September call ups, fill the rosters with AA players, Mexican league players or Indy players.

How do you know that those players won't be added when they are done with their own playoffs? Is Wren and Jungmann essential for the Brewers right now? Nope. So they stay with the AAA team and try to win there. You are making way too big of a deal about this. Guys like Guerra are a bigger part of the Brewers major league team whether you like it or not.

"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

Ever consider they may want keep Jungmann stretched out, so he's an option should they need a spot start or two? Ever consider it's better for Wren to get his 4-5 ABs every day, and that may be more valuable for his future here or elsewhere than sitting on the Brewers' bench.

Nobody is getting screwed, they are getting paid to play baseball according to their contracts. Brewers decide where and when, and there's far more that goes into it besides who you think deserves it.

Exactly, it's about winning games. Berry isn't going to win any games. Is he going to be a difference maker? No.

But Wren and Orf are difference makers? Btw, since when is that the bar for September call-ups?

For some reason people think Berry has elite speed...he doesn't. He's not a Dyson, Hamilton or Gore type speedster. Watch his AAA games.

You mean the 10 he played in? He was 2 for 2 in SB base attempts. He is near perfect in his big league career and most of those are in stress situations/games. He isn't going to hurt us by sitting on our bench. You are stressing way too hard about the 35th or 36th guy on our roster. No one said he was faster than Billy Hamilton. Breathe man.

The point I am trying to make is he isn't going to make a difference. So bring up a younger guy who deserves a shot, not some has been former player who at one time was a good base stealer. People make the same argument about most of the guys the Brewers pick up. So called person posted great numbers in the past so he must me a great pickup. More often than not that is not the case. Check the facts, at AAA this year he had 3 steals and 2 caught stealing, played for Rochester and Colorado Springs. Berry is going to make $100,000 dollars in a month. Wren, Orf, Dejesus around $1,200 for the last week of AAA. I don't even think the AAA players get paid for making the playoffs.

You're telling people to "check the facts" when multiple posts here have cited much more relevant facts than five lousy SB attempts at AAA this year, facts that you continue to ignore because they contradict your bias? I think I'll put my trust in the full range of facts, plus the front office people who actually know something and care about winning baseball games, not winning an argument.

So bring up a younger guy who deserves a shot, not some has been former player who at one time was a good base stealer.

DeJesus is 30. Orf is 27. Wren is 26. They are all, in fact, younger than Berry, who is 32. However, they aren't young enough to be prospects or anything. IMHO Orf is the only intriguing one of the three, because he keeps hitting and he plays all over. I'd like to see him considered for a utility gig next year. But as others have pointed out, he wouldn't be playing now if he was in Milwaukee. Berry's up because the team wanted a specialist; they don't need a backup infielder.

I particularly don't get the fascination with Wren. He OPSd .766 at Colorado Springs at age 26. His fans crowed about his nice little breakout last year, but of course they're silent about his return to Earth this year. The notion that he "deserves a shot" would make sense coming from his mom or his high school coach; but based on, you know, the facts, he's the dictionary definition of minor league depth.

Anybody have a gif of a dead horse being beaten after it's been buried for a few months? That's pretty much how the last few pages of this thread feels...

I get the interest in Wren & Orf (good organizational soldiers & solid contributors), as well as DeJesus (based on his Colorado Springs numbers, mostly ignoring his MLB past). Maybe they're not difference makers, but at some point we could use a few role players to contribute something more practical that the only-occasional HRs that Broxton & Villar have provided most of this year.

From a philosophical standpoint...

I think the Brewers could use a better mix of SLG-weighted and BA/OBP-weighted hitters. The balance for several years has favored HRs, whether intentionally or not. Many (too many?) of our strong OPS guys are buoyed by their power and less by their BA or OBP. Power's important but not everything. There's value in contact hitters with a good BA and who get on base well in general. I'm a fan of OPS in general, but if a guy's game is mostly about power, there's often too little left when the power hits a dry spell or serious slump.

They're not true comps re: my point, but the likes of Gwynn, Molitor, and Lou Brock are HOF hitters whose value was in their getting on base and, to varying degrees, their speed. Heck, Lou Brock's career OPS is .753. But the dude could hit just fine and run better than most others ever. Molitor & Gwynn's "power" was more their 2Bs & 3Bs, not their ordinary HR power, which in both cases is something this current Brewers team could use a whole lot of. Wouldn't an in-his-prime Jeff Cirillo help the '17 Brewers a whole lot!!! (Ditto for Fernando Vina & Mark Loretta.)

I'm intrigued enough by what Kyle Wren that I hope to see him in MIL at some point. He's no "prospect" in the glitzy sense, but maybe it's worth a shot to see if he may indeed be serviceable. Maybe he can become what Logan Schaefer was supposed to be. If he fails, at least he'd have had his shot (joining a long list of OFs including Jim Olander, Jim Rushford, Lavell Freeman as just a few who come to mind).

I agree with you on the BA and OBP. Cooper is just the guy that could of provided that. Career minor league average around .300 and .370 OBP. I would have rather have seen Aguilar or Thames traded for something instead of Cooper. More contact hitters are needed. Strikeouts have been ridiculous. Brewers may very well set the all time team strikeout record this year.

You can easily make a case for keeping nearly every single individual player on the current roster. The problem is that in having all of them together, there are too many high-K, high-HR, too-often-little-else guys.

the 2017 season is over for the brewers' minor league affiliates.

eligible to be recalled:

lewis brinson (on 7-day disabled list since 16 august)

adrian houser (last pitched 3.0 innings 4 september)

taylor jungmann (last pitched 6.0 innings 6 september; out of options in 2018)

jorge lopez (last pitched 3.0 innings on 3 september)

yadiel rivera (out of options in 2018)

tyler webb (last pitched 1.0 inning on 10 september)

jimmy nelson has yet to be placed on the 60-day disabled list. this would allow the brewers to select the contract of any minor leaguer in their system and add him to the 40-man roster.

Whoever replaces Jimmy would be playoff eligible right?

if you're talking about a minor leaguer within the brewers organization on 31 august, according to the source cited in this thread, he would not be postseason eligible . . . because nelson would not have spent at least 60 days on the disabled list by the time the regular season ends.
