September call-ups

Obviously it's very early to be thinking about this, but any predictions on who will be the September call-ups? The trade deadline will likely change the 40 man roster a bit, but I'm guessing we'll see more guys than usual given the quality of our prospects and the team embracing a depth philosophy. Could have a big impact on the stretch run. I would guess that Bandy, Blazek, Espino, Brinson, Cordell, Scahill, Woodruff, Rivera, Lopez, and Phillips all have a good chance of being called up if they're not up already.

 

Also, do we think that the Brewers would try to get Dubon and Wang on the 40 man to allow for another base running specialist and LOOGY?

what's going to be more interesting is who's on the 40-man and the major league disabled list on 31 august. those are the players eligible for the postseason.

If he's not used in a deal or brought up earlier, Jungmann certainly will be back. I don't foresee an issue opening up a couple 40 man spots to add Wang and perhaps another player.

If the team is in the playoff race in September, then expect a ton of call ups. Extra catcher, pinch hitters, defensive specialists, lots of bullpen arms.

 

One thing nice thing about the expanded rosters is that we can rest players when games are out of hand. A lot of players get tired come September, and giving them a few innings off here and there can help. And arms like Barnes and Knebel have thrown a lot of innings. In blow out games, it's the perfect time to have players like Jungmann around to eat up some innings instead of bringing in Hughes or another guy who's thrown a lot of innings.

i like the idea of calling up both catchers and having guys available (like kyle wren, mauricio dubon, lewis brinson, yadiel rivera, jonathan villar, hernan perez and keon broxton) to pinch run for them if any catcher reaches base late in the game (either as a starter or as a pinch hitter).

if the brewers are willing to pay him a major league salary and let him accrue major league service time, the brewers could call up adrian houser (not to report) and put him on the 60-day disabled list to free up a roster spot. worth the extra spend if the brewers are in the playoff hunt in late august.

i'm still pulling for kyle wren as a backup outfielder for 2018 and beyond. bringing him up after 12 august ensures that he'll enter 2018 spring training with three minor league options. i'd love to have him as a pinch running option in close games.

 

michael reed and ryan cordell are no longer in his way, and there's still an open spot on the 40-man.

Off the current 40-man, I'd guess that Woodruff, Jungmann, Lopez, Espino, Webb, and Broxton are likely call ups, plus Vogt once he's healthy (which might be before September 1st, in which case Bandy would be the call up).

 

Dubon has to be added this winter so I'd expect he'll get a call up, even if most of his game action ends up being as a pinch runner (plus maybe a spot start or two). Rivera's time on the 40-man should come to an end when they add Dubon, so with the 40-man still at 39 after that swap, I'd give Wei-Chung Wang a shot also.

 

I'd like to see a spot open up for Ivan De Jesus also, as I'd like to see him at least competing for the 2B job next Spring and if we don't add him this year and see what he's got I'm guessing he'll just get signed somewhere else in the offseason.

 

I'd let Archer/Derby come to ST next year as a NRI and see if they can find a spot in the bullpen, but too many arms out there right now ahead of them. Angel Ventura I believe would need to be added to the 40-man this winter so he's another possible add, but not sure I see that happening.

 

Wilkerson should be interesting here too. He's a Stearns pickup, so I'd expect he gets a chance at some point and he's pitched very well this year. Maybe he can take Espino's spot on the 40-man?

 

I'll stop with the commentary but Nick Ramirez, Kyle Wren, and Freddy Peralta are also possibilities.

 

Lots of talent to call up, but nowhere near enough room for them all. Should be an interesting Spring Training next year for the bullpen though.

My answer could change depending on if the Brewers are still in contention but would like the coaching staff to get a look at Wang, Barbosa, Ramirez and Webb so they and Stearns can make a decision on who has the best chance of helping this team going forward and if Wang/Ramirez/Barbosa should perhaps replace Webb on the 40 man. Would also like them to get a look at Angel Ventura, if not a MLB starter could he potentially be a decent option next year for the bullpen. Maybe call up Dejesus and he could be an utility guy next year.

Anyone on the 40 man is a potential callup. My favorites would be Susac, Broxton, Jungman, Webb and Woodruff. Yadier would be a decent backup but his 40 man spot is in jeopardy, same with Espino.

 

Lopez and T. Williams would be nice to see but might not happen.

 

As for adds to the 40 man: Wang, Dubon, A. Ventura are options if we can open up 40 man spots.

the colorado springs sky sox are in first place, 6.5 games up on the oklahoma city dodgers. their final regular season game is 4 september. if in first place by then, they would play a five-game postseason series, and if advancing from that, would have another five-game series.

 

that's obviously going to affect september roster expansion . . . certainly can't expect the brewers to raid the sky sox roster.

 

but, also have to consider the 2017 minor league service time of optioned and potentially optioned players--michael blazek, keon broxton, wei-chung wang, tyler webb and brandon woodruff--because if any of them spend more than 20 days optioned to the minor leagues, they would burn an option.

 

when a player is optioned to the minor leagues, he must stay optioned for at least 10 days--unless being recalled to replace a player going on the disabled list, paternity list, bereavement list, or as the 26th man of a doubleheader.

 

august is obviously a key time to consider the makeup of the 25-man roster--for example, wang could be optioned later in august and recalled on 1 september and not burn his option.

 

if blazek isn't recalled by the early next week and stays up for good, he burns his final option.

 

if broxton is optioned again in 2017, stays one day past the minimum or isn't recalled for an injured player, he too will burn his final option.

 

wang has not been optioned in 2017. if he spends less than 20 days optioned in 2017, he enters 2018 spring training with two options.

 

if webb isn't recalled later this week and kept up for good, he will burn his option and enter 2018 spring training with two options.

 

woodruff was optioned 24 july. as mentioned above, he must spend at least 10 days optioned on this stint before being eligible for recall. if he spends less than 20 days optioned in 2017, he enters 2018 spring training with three options.

 

i'm not suggesting that the brewers should ensure that all of these players don't burn their options this year . . . just advising what could happen as the club moves forward in august.

I think if Milwaukee is within striking distance of the cubs and ARI/COL, you'll see them raid the AAA roster. Their AAA playoff run does not trump the MLB push for the playoffs.

let's take stock of this: michael blazek is no longer on the 40-man. keon broxton has been recalled, and as long as he isn't optioned again, will not burn his final option. wei-chung wang only has a few more days left before he burns his second option. tyler webb has already burned his first option. if brandon woodruff is optioned again and spends even close to the minimum 10-day required stay, he burns his first option.

 

junior guerra is about to burn his final option if he isn't recalled.

 

i'm going to assume that the brewers are considering preserving the option for junior guerra, and possibly wei-chung wang. also going to assume that the club will accept burning brandon woodruff's first option by sending him down after his friday start to make room for an activated chase anderson. (advantage to the brewers: the sky sox will be at home while the brewers play the rockies, so it'd be easy to shuttle another player in for saturday's game and then option him back to colorado springs to activate anderson.)

 

again, if a player spends less than 20 days optioned, he doesn't burn that option. there are less than 20 days before september roster expansion, so it'd be easy to recall a player optioned in the coming days and not burn his option.

 

candidates for optioning that would not burn an option if sent down and recalled in september:

of these, the only players that the brewers should even consider optioning are jacob barnes and eric sogard.

 

candidates who could be optioned, having already burned their 2017 option:

andrew susac (should only consider optioning when stephen vogt is activated)

 

and of course, room could be made for guerra and/or wang by removing someone the 25-man roster via the disabled list, a trade, or designating him for assignment (which would also conveniently open up the 40-man roster for a minor league prospect in september).

 

we've already seen the brewers exercise this option-preserving strategy with keon broxton. knowing that september roster expansion is so close, will they do the same for junior guerra and/or wei-chung wang at the expense of removing someone else from the 25-man (either short term or permanently)?

Dubon seems like almost a given for his speed and defense alone.

Unless Arcia is sore, or Walker gets flipped at the end of August, I don't see Dubon as a given. Now Phillips is a given. Guerra will be back. Suter is a sure thing. Wang and Webb are likely. My longshot is Nick Ramirez.

Unless somebody in the bullpen gets hurt I don't see how Guerra gets back to Milwaukee until September. They have stuck with Torres this long, not likely to DFA him the last week of August and as long as Barnes keeps hitting 100 not going to send him down.

 

Also, Sogard was mentioned as a possible option but he can refuse an assignment and the Brewers do still seem to like him even after the addition of Walker.

advantage to the brewers dfa-ing someone like carlos torres: another off day this week, and an off day each of the following two weeks, and then september rolls around.

 

again, the brewers were pretty obvious with their intention of preserving keon broxton's final option by recalling him so soon. any player has more value with an option remaining. one has to think they'll have the same approach with junior guerra.

Now that we have Walker, Dubon seems like less of an option. We do have to add him to the 40-man this winter anyway, but I don't see us calling him up until at least after the minor league season is over as we've already got 3 2B options and multiple SS options ahead of him with the team already, and there might be better options in the minor leagues for a pinch runner too. Not sure they want to bring him up if he's not going to get playing time but we'll see.

 

I think adding 3-5 arms to the bullpen is a must. After the minor league season is over, I don't see much reason not to bring up Webb/Wang for some extra lefties, plus give Jungmann/Lopez a chance to show what they can do out of the bullpen. Guerra/Suter will be up as well.

 

I could see the Brewers having 30-35 guys on their roster by mid September. As for what we'll see on September 1st, I'd guess Brett Phillips, Brandon Woodruff, and maybe a reliever or two.
