Mudcats fall 5-4 in 12 on Ockimey walk-off blast

The Mudcats forced extras with a two-out run in the ninth, but lost 5-4 in 12 on Sunday

By Carolina Mudcats | July 16, 2017 6:28 PM ET

http://www.milb.com/assets/images/3/3/2/231792332/cuts/16x9_JakeGatewood_lyjdpd82_7w2brkn4.jpg

Josh Ockimey hit a home run to lead off the bottom of the 12th to walk off for the Red Sox. The Mudcats tried to sneak a 4th inning out of Brad Kuntz (3 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 4 K) who took the hard luck loss on the only hit he gave up in the game. Frank Lopez gave up 3 runs in 5 innings of work as the starter. Luke Barker and Eric Hanhold pitched the middle innings.

The Mudcats came back twice to tie the game including a two out, nobody on base rally in the 9th. Corey Ray pinch hit with 2 outs in the 9th and drew a walk. Trent Clark (1-5) then knocked him in on a close play at the plate when his flare dropped in along the left field line. Isan Diaz (2-4, 2B, HR, BB) and Cooper Hummel (1-4, HR, BB) both homered.

Throw out all the stats for the right hand hitters in this game. The umpire's strike zone was so ridiculous when Mike Shawaryn was in that they really had no chance. Balls were thrown beyond the white line marking the left handed batter's box which were called strikes, even if they were around the ankles. Shawaryn throws from the extreme 3rd base side of the rubber and the umpire was setting up way over behind the hitters. I don't think he could see much of those pitches. The Red Sox manager was thrown out for arguing balls and strikes so I guess he didn't like all the calls either.

Lugnuts Stop Rattlers Win Streak

Lansing beats Wisconsin 14-2

Cameron Roegner allowed an unearned run on one hit over five innings for the Timber Rattlers on Sunday at Lansing.

Wisconsin Box Score

The tale of two halves in today's game. The Rattlers held a 2-1 advantage until the bottom of the 6th inning when things started to unravel.

Tucker Neuhaus went 3-for-4 with a home run to raise his season OPS to .771. It was his 13th home run of the season which is a nice breakout for a player that had just 7 professional home runs coming into this year.

As noted in the Chris Mehring's recap it was a good effort on the mound from 2016 draft pick Cameron Roegner. Roegner has allowed just 8 earned runs over his last 8 outings (35.2 IP). I have a soft spot for the "kids" born and raised in Wisconsin, so hopefully Cam can keep it up.

Given Jungmann's solid turnaround, might he be up next if Guerra's struggles continue?

I could see Jungmann having some value as the 3rd piece (a guy ready to replace Gray in Oakland's current rotation) in the deal to get Gray. Regardless, I'd say if he does make a start in the majors this year, it's less than 50-50 that it's with the Brewers.

Wild finish results in a 6-5 Barons win over Shuckers on Sunday

Blake Allemand's controversial ground rule double not enough for Shuckers

By Biloxi Shuckers

Allemand_thumb_4_444e3hvu_6v46iwmy.jpg

Blake Allemand stands next to manager MIke Guerrero after reaching third base on a hit in the ninth inning.

Biloxi Shuckers Box Score

Quick Summary:

It was a wild finish for the Shuckers in their 5-6 loss to Birmingham. Taylor Williams started the game on the mound and didn't have great stuff. He walked two batters while giving up two runs in three innings. The Shuckers went into the bottom of the 9th down by just two runs. Blake Allemand came up with two on and hit a game tying triple. However after a huddle the umpires ruled it a ground rule double erasing one of the runs. The foul poles at MGM Park are in play and the ball landed by the pole. Unfortunately for the Shuckers the bad break costed them the game.

Pitching Summary:

On the mound, Taylor Williams (3.0 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 K) started the game while Tayler Scott (3.0 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 5 K), Josh Uhen (1.0 IP, H), Quintin Torres-Costa (1.0 IP, 3K), and Travis Hissong (1.0 IP, R, BB, K) provided the relief.

Hitting Summary:

Johnny Davis (1-5, R, RBI, HR)

Tyrone Taylor (2-5, R, 2B, SB)

Dustin DeMuth (1-4, R, RBI, HR)

Biloxi Shuckers Game Log

Blake Allemand goes from game tying triple to a double leading to 5-6 loss.

Biloxi Bottom of the 9th

Javier Betancourt doubles (12) on a line drive to left fielder Courtney Hawkins.

Wendell Rijo singles on a ground ball to left fielder Courtney Hawkins. Javier Betancourt to 3rd.

Johnny Davis strikes out swinging.

Tyrone Taylor strikes out swinging.

Blake Allemand hits a ground-rule double (18) on a fly ball down the right-field line. Javier Betancourt scores. Wendell Rijo to 3rd.

Biloxi Shuckers Manager Mike Guerrero ejected by 1B umpire Alex Mackay.

Brandon Brennan intentionally walks Michael Choice.

Jacob Nottingham grounds into a force out, shortstop Jose Vinicio to second baseman Jake Peter. Michael Choice out at 2nd.

QTC may be the best reliever in our system but flies under radar. I'm excited about him. His K Rates are outstanding. He is tough to hit, a lefty, and has been fairly consistent over past few years!

In four concise paragraphs, Robby fills you in nicely - learn how the walk-off took place at the link above.

Colorado Springs Game One Box Score

We were wondering, looks like Ivan De Jesus, Jr., having an amazing season, is the primary first baseman after the Garrett Cooper trade (by the way, congrats on that first big league hit, Garrett!).

Sky Sox only had three hits in the seven-inning contest, but the Lewis Brinson triple and De Jesus., Jr. double were key, as you just read.

Hopefully we get video of the Orf walkoff later this AM. Until then, from the summary:

Colorado Springs (57-34) jumped out to a 3-0 lead with a three-run third inning. With two outs, Kyle Wren grounded an opposite-field single to left, scoring Nick Noonan for the first run of the game. One batter later, Mauricio Dubon launched a two-run shot over the left field wall for his second Triple-A home run of 2017.

Colorado Springs Game Two Box Score

Worth a week's wait to play if you're going to walk off the Cubbies' twice!

Sky Sox debuts for Tyler Bortnick (played second base) and RH reliever Matt Ramsey, who made his AAA debut as well.

Colorado Springs Game Two Box Score

Now 57-34, Sky Sox with an eight-game division lead over Oklahoma City (Dodgers). Very impressive.

DSL Brewers: The Dominican Summer League All-Star Game takes place, as noted here earlier:

The Brewers had three players named to the Dominican Summer League All-Star team. Infielders Jean Carmona and Aaron Familia as well as outfielder Pablo Abreu were all selected to represent the National League.

The NL won, 3-2 (yay).

Aaron Familia committed a 1st inning error that cost his team a run, but thankfully didn't impact the final score. At the plate, Familia lined out to left and walked. Pablo Abreu flied out to center in his lone at-bat, and Jean Carmona did not see action.

AZL Indians 7, AZL Brewers 6

AZL Brewers Boxscore

The Brewers had been able to survive their pitching for much of the first few weeks of the season, but over the past three games that offensive luck has run out. Three late runs for the Indians snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. The club is still in first place by 1.5 games, and has a 1st half magic number of 10.

After going hitless for the first (and so far only) time in his career last Wednesday, Keston Hiura has had three multi-hit games in a row. Sunday night's effort was 3-4 with a HBP. All three hits were singles, which is not the norm for Hiura. No other Brewers player had more than one hit. Kenny Corey smacked his league leading tenth double on the year, and Tristen Lutz hit his second career triple.

Six Baby Brewer pitchers hit the mound, including an organizational debut for soon-to-be Colorado Springs bound Jeanmar Gomez, and a pro debut for recent indy ball signee Alec Kenilvort. Gabe Friese was dominant in his 1 1/3 innings of work, striking out all four batters he faced. Youngsters Wilfred Salaman and Brendan Murphy had less success.

AZL Brewers Game Log

Winning until:

AZL Indians Bottom of the 8th
