Pablo Sandoval designated for assignment

Brewer Fanatic Contributor

Kung Fu Panda is DFA. Wow, that was a waste of $95M. According the Baseball-Reference, he produced -2.0 WAR in his 2.5 seasons in Boston. Red Sox fans must be banging their heads against the walls every time Travis Shaw hits an HR.

The thing that is funny is that after the Red Sox gave Panda the contract, I don't know anyone who said, "Yep, solid move." Everyone pretty much shook their head and said, "That's not going to end well." Heck, it never began well.

I'm guessing the signing (along with Ramirez) was Cherington trying to save his job. Crazy.

Farrell and Dombrowski have finally finished making excuses for Sandoval. They traded Travis and gave him the job back hoping he would be the player they gave that big contract to.

Sandoval is just another selfish player who wants the money and when he gets it proceeds to coast. He bashed the Giants when he left because he didn't want to take accountability for his weight problems.

He should apologize to every teammate and fan in Boston. Also ownership. But he won't.

Give me a team like the Brewers who have young players who want to go out there and do their best every time for their team and their fans.

He had an OPS+ over 110 in 6 of his 7 years in San Francisco but couldn't hit his way out of a wet paper bag in Boston. You can throw all the weight excuses out there you want but it makes zero sense that he went from very productive hitter to absolute garbage in one offseason.

This is quite true. I mean, the guy was always pretty big, but he generally hit well and his defense was pretty good. But it was like he flipped a switch and went from fine to horrible overnight. He was only 28 when he signed with Boston - not exactly ancient.

My guess is that it was a combination of things:

- Put on some weight - this just hit a tipping point. He got a little slower and a little less quick.

- Just aged quickly. It's not crazy to see bigger bodied guys start to age around 30. Add in the extra weight, and maybe he just fell apart quickly.

- Injuries built up - Sandoval had had his share of injuries with SF. Perhaps they just caught up to him.

- Moved to a new organization. Perhaps he put pressure on himself - pressed, etc.

- Lost an edge - He got a $95M commitment. Maybe he just lost an edge and stopped pushing himself. It happens. He got set for life and sat back.

I don't know what it was, but when we look for answers like this it's often more than one thing. Often times it's a just a little bit of everything. I'd bet that was what happened with Panda.

Does a 110 OPS+ really qualify as a "very productive hitter" justifying that ridiculous contract? It was a horrible contract not only because of Sandoval's body type, but because he was clearly just a .325 wOBA, 2.0 WAR player by that point. He got the contract because he hit 4 HR in the playoffs or whatever.

That's what you call the double whammy.

Call him whatever you want, he was a consistent hitter his whole career and then dropped 35 OPS+ in one offseason and never recovered. That makes no sense for a guy who's not even 30 years old.

I'm just glad they signed Sandova because if they hadn't, Shaw may not be a Brewer.

I'm just glad that Shaw is a Brewer because if they hadn't, this thread would be an argument on whether or not we should pick up Panda.

Sandoval's OBP and SLG% had fallen for three consecutive years as he reached free agency. However, he was a beast in the playoffs in 2014, and apparently that small sample was what Boston assumed they'd be getting, not the declining player his regular season stats suggested he'd be

Threads like this should be brought up whenever the argument for signing a veteran because "prospects are too risky, so we need someone who's proven themselves" comes up.

There is good and bad of signing veterans. I'd have loved to have Grienke and his production on his LAD contract. The tricky part is knowing who is worth it and who isn't.

So, if Shaw is the mayor of Ding Dong city, then Pablo must be the king.

Given the weight issues and the style of player he was the contract was probably doomed to begin with. Most likely he should have gotten a high value 3 year deal so if he broke down physically or defensively the team was protected some.

Keep in mind a lot of why the contract failed was injury, an injury he still might to be recovered from. It is easy to just say a contract is bad when a guy gets hurt but that is just too simplistic.

If people thought that deal was even remotely a good idea when the ink was wet I would agree...but this was sadly soooo obvious. Aramis Ramirez sure worked out.
